Broadway Ticket Packages

In booking your hotel accommodations in New York City, be on the lookout for the different packages that hotels offer their guests. One of the packages worth looking at is the Broadway ticket package that hotels offer their guests. Most hotels in New York City have in-house Broadway experts who can help you get the tickets for the shows that you want to see.

How it works

These ticket packages are usually offered or given to guests who choose to book their accommodations online. Part of the registration process is selecting the shows that you want to see on Broadway.

Once you have finished the registration process, the hotels will then send you the tickets for the Broadway shows that you want, even before you get to New York. Most hotels have reserved seating for their guests in the theater, and you will most likely be given a reserved seat.

Most hotels boast that they have good seats reserved just for their guests. But if you would like to request special seating, ask the hotel in advance. Only a very a few hotels allow this because they might have to pay more for the tickets that they will be giving you. You will usually have to shoulder the extra charges.

Booking your accommodations online has many advantages. It does not only give you convenience and allow you to save valuable time - it also allows you to book your Broadway ticket packages in advance. Pick a hotel that can offer you the best ticket packages. They will not only make your life easier - they will also make your New York trip more memorable.

Wedding Photography: How to Become a Successful Wedding Photographer

Once in while I receive e-mails or phone calls from aspiring or beginner wedding photographers asking me for advise on how to become successful in the wedding field. My first question is always what their motivation is to become a wedding photographer. Some will reply that they heard from somebody that it is easy money, or that they got a cool camera that takes great photos or that they would like to make some money on the side etc.
While it is true that wedding photography can be a very profitable business achieving success in the wedding industry is not just a matter of getting a camera and start shooting. Wedding photography involves artistic talent, human sense, complete mastery of photographic techniques, business knowledge, and a strong desire to learn and deliver the best to the wedding couple.

Here I have summarized some points that I believe will guide beginner wedding photographers:

1. Learn photography before anything else. A wedding photographer is expected to be a master of the craft. You will be in charge of capturing people’s most precious life moments. The wedding day is not the place to learn photography.

2. Just because you got a brand new camera it does not automatically make you an effective and reliable photographer. Photography goes beyond cool toys and gadgets. Learn composition and develop a unique artistic vision. Some of the great photographs of all time were taken with manual cameras.

3. Master the digital workflow, including color management, digital image processing, file management and image correction and enhancement.

4. Learn to love photography more than anything else. Don’t come to the wedding photography field with just dreams of making money. It is true that there are many successful wedding photographers that make a lot of money. However according to the Professional Photographers of America the average photographer in America makes about $24,000 a year.

5. Focus on delivering quality more than quantity. Seek with all your heart to capture unique photographs.

6. Develop a style that is recognizable and unique. Don’t try to be like somebody else. Clients look for unique photographers, with a unique vision.

7. Give wedding photography all your heart and effort. Long when you are gone your photographs will last forever. It is a great way to be remembered.

8. Open your heart and your mind and great photos will happen. Concentrate on the human aspect of weddings, the details, and emotions and be ready to capture them. Let the camera become an extension of you.

9. Share your technical knowledge and make connections with other wedding photographers.

10. Participate in wedding photography image competitions. It will give you the opportunity to have your work evaluated by peers and the motivation to improve your work quality.

11. Learn something new everyday. Take advantage of professional photography organizations such as Professional Photographers of America (PPA), WPPI, etc. Attend their seminars, workshops. Participate in Internet wedding photography forums and learn and share tips, tools and techniques.

12. Don’t neglect the business aspect of wedding photography. Learn to manage your business effectively. Take business courses and seminars.

Celebrity Babies – Don’t Hide Them, Parents

Hollywood is full of paparazzi that want to get that perfect picture of a celebrity, so they can sell it to the media and make a lot of money. They will go to almost any length to achieve their goal. Most of the time celebrities are trying to stop the paparazzi from taking their picture, and they get mad when they are followed. Not only do the paparazzi want pictures of celebrities, but they also want pictures of their babies.

I can understand, though, a celebrity wanting to have a private life, and not be bothered all of the time. However they are celebrities, so they should expect a certain amount of intrusion on their private lives. The worst thing a celebrity can do is to try to keep the paparazzi away from seeing their babies.

The reason I believe it is not a good idea for celebrities to keep the paparazzi away from their babies is it just prolongs the amount of time you have to work to keep them away. If a celebrity would just set up a picture shoot for some of the paparazzi to take pictures of their baby, then it would be over with. Also this assures that the picture of your baby is flattering, and you can be proud of that picture for the rest of your child’s life. However some celebrities take great pains to keep the paparazzi away from their babies, by keeping them covered up, staying at home, or only going places where the security is too tight for the paparazzi to get a glimpse of their baby. The biggest problem with this is that it is a burden on the parents as well as their baby. Why run around secretly for months, when you can just spend one afternoon with a group of paparazzi and be done with it? Your baby is already going to have a different life, because they are a celebrities’ baby, but you could make it easier on them if you would just get the whole picture thing out of the way early on.

Optical vs Digital Zoom

Compact digital cameras are advertised with either optical or digital zoom, and sometimes with both. Both optical and digital zoom are used to magnify your subject by “moving in closer”, but they work in different ways that will give you drastically different results. The choice you make when buying a digital camera can influence the quality of your photographs, so let’s have a look at the differences:

Optical Zoom:
Optical zoom will not influence the quality of your photographs negatively. It can be compared to a traditional zoom lens on a 35mm camera, bringing the subject closer to still give you a clear, close up photo. Since buying a camera with greater optical zoom is more expensive than one with only a 2x or 3x, deciding how much optical zoom you need can greatly influence your budget. I would suggest buying a camera with the longest optical zoom you can afford. If you’re primarily going to use your camera for social pictures, 2x or 3x optical zoom should be more than sufficient. In this case, you can always move in closer physically to get a better shot. If you’re planning on shooting wildlife or subjects that you cannot get physically close to, buy a camera with more than 6x optical zoom.

Digital Zoom:
With digital zoom, the camera crops the entire image, and then digitally enlarges it. This “fake” zoom crops and throws image information away. This is comparable to cropping an image with image editing software, and can result in pixilation and “soft” images. The camera replaces the missing pixels with pixels that are close in colour to those in the original image. The colours are rarely as sharp or accurate as optical zoom, as it’s an estimation.

Optical vs Digital Zoom:
While it is useful to have both optical and digital zoom, optical zoom will result in sharper images than digital zoom. Both optical and digital zoom have good and bad qualities – digital zoom being far cheaper but affecting the quality of your images, and optical zoom being more expensive but resulting in images that are not pixelated.

The Different Styles of Inuit Sculptures

At first, all Inuit soapstone sculptures from the Arctic may look alike. However, there are variances in artistic styles among the different Inuit art producing communities. Although all communities produce Inuit sculptures featuring both animal and human subjects, some seem to do more animals while others do more people figures. Some communities make their subjects appear quite realistic with lots of high detail while in others, a more crude and primitive look is preferred. There are Inuit sculptures that have a highly polished finishes and some that are the complete opposite where they are left dull and unpolished.

Some areas specialize in producing small scale miniatures much like the artwork by their ancestors who first came into contact with white men. Inuit sculpture can range from quite conservative to bold or even wildly outrageous. Scenes can be playful like a piece depicting two Inuit children playing or with a sense of humor like a walrus waving. On the other end, transformation and shamanic pieces can look disturbing or even frightening to some. Hunting scenes can portray the gory realities of life and death in nature.

One thing that all Inuit sculptures have in common is that they show the fact that Inuit people have deep connections with their family life, their natural surroundings and spiritual beliefs. It is interesting to observe that even if some Inuit artists have converted to Christianity as their religion, they may still include Inuit spirituality and legends as a big part of their lives. This is portrayed in some of their Inuit sculpture and other artwork.

The differences in artistic style are partly due to the different types of stone and other materials available in each community as well as regional preferences. Of course there can be outside influences when Inuit artists travel from community to community. This is particularly the case with larger growing communities like Iqaluit which has seen an influx of Inuit from other parts of Nunavut ever since becoming its capital. One can find a variety and blending of Inuit art styles here. A longer version of this article which describes the different styles of Inuit sculptures from different Canadian Arctic regions can be found at the Free Spirit Gallery website.

Successfully Reduce and Eliminate Your Accent

I used to have an accent. I didn’t mind the accent itself, what bothered me was constantly being judged by strangers. If you have an accent too, I’m sure you’ve noticed that you are being treated differently than your friends who are native English speakers. Anybody who judges people with accents probably doesn’t even mean to. It’s mainly a subconscious thing and, of course, labeling people with accents as unsophisticated isn’t limited to the United States; it happens in every part of the world. Growing up in another country I used to stereotype people with accents too and it probably wasn’t different wherever you grew up.

Understandably, almost everyone working and living in the US would like to be able to speak without an accent, but relatively few people succeed. Effects of accent reduction programs are rarely immediate, so most students give up the battle against the accent shortly after having started. So, first of all you need to have the right attitude. Try to avoid saying things like “I’m too old to work on my accent now.” or “Who cares whether I have an accent or not?” Yes, getting rid of an accent gets increasingly difficult as you get older, but it’s most certainly not impossible. No matter how old you are, it will require a big effort and a great deal of determination.

There are three key steps that are essential to anybody’s success when getting rid of an accent. In the end, how successful you will be and how long it will take depends on the time you are willing to invest and how open you are to changes.

First, you need to accept that reducing or eliminating your accent has affects on your whole life. It’s crucial that you step out of the comfort zone and realize that you need to make new friends and surround yourself with as many English speaking people as possible. Take advantage of the fact that you live near thousands of native speakers. Go out there and socialize with them. This is what most people fail to realize, you cannot expect your accent to go away if everybody around you speaks your mother tongue and you rarely even speak English.

Then, speaking English as much as possible is a pretty obvious step. All the books you read and the hours you work on your accent won’t be of any use unless you go out there and talk to people. Remember that mistakes are part of the learning process, so don’t be ashamed to mispronounce things. Keep talking and you will see your English improving very quickly. Also, tell all your friends and family that you want them to speak English with you. This is very helpful, especially in the beginning, since you already feel comfortable talking with them.

Last but not least, an often overlooked factor is how important active listening is. By carefully paying attention to what native English speakers around you are saying, you will not only learn lots of new terms, but also learn the correct pronunciation of words. If you don’t have many English speaking friends yet, you can watch TV and listen to the radio which will basically give you the same results.

Whether you already have some experience in eliminating your accent or you’re just getting started, these basic rules should be a big help. Naturally, you’ll have to find out yourself what methods and exercises work best for you. I advice you to talk to people who have successfully eliminated their accents. I’m one of those lucky few and my friends are often surprised at how simple the things are that I did to get rid of my accent. Give all the methods and exercises that sound right for you a try and stick with what works best – that’s how I succeeded.

The Romantic Spirit of the Harlem Renaissance: Nella Larsen

Like her contemporary Jessie Redmon Fauset, Nella Larsen also fictionalized middle class society; however in Larsen’s works, there are undercurrents that imply middle class values are not always ‘good.’ Nella Larsen’s only two novels, Quicksand (1928) and Passing (1929) were ‘novels of passing’ but unlike their predecessors, these two novels are “more complex and ambitious” (Davis 560). In these works, Larsen “explores the relationships between appearance and reality, deception and unmasking, manipulation and imaginative management, aggression and self-defense” (Davis 561). Perhaps Larsen is able to delve deeper into the consciousness of people torn between two worlds because she herself had experienced living in both the ‘white’ world and the ‘black’ world.

Larsen’s mother was an emigrant from Denmark, and her father was from the Virgin Islands. During her early childhood, she lived in a “white working-class neighborhood of Chicago,” and attended an elementary school which consisted mainly of the “children of German and Scandinavian immigrants” (Wall 91). However, Wall reports that Larsen suffered “alienation” in her home life, and was “ostracized at school and in the neighborhood” (Wall 91).

In her teen years, Larsen attended Wendell Phillips High School, and later “enrolled in the high school department of Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee” which put Larsen among middle class African Americans (Wall 92). But Larsen left Fisk after only one year, apparently “she was no more at home in an all-black community than she had been in a white one” (Wall 92). After leaving Fisk in 1908, until she enrolled at New York’s Lincoln Hospital Training School for Nurses in 1912, there exists no evidence of her life in the intervening four years (Wall 92). Larsen says that she spent some time in Denmark attending the University of Copenhagen, but Wall asserts that “in fact, Larsen did not leave the United States” (Wall 92). Wall further states that what Larsen did in that period of her life “remains a mystery,” that Larsen “went to great lengths to conceal” (Wall 92).

After graduating from nursing school in 1915, Larsen accepted a position as an “assistant superintendent of nurses at Tuskegee Institute” (Wall 92). While working at Tuskegee, Larsen discovered that “along with their academic and vocational training, students were also schooled in subservience and docility” (Wall 92). Larsen left Tuskegee after one year. She returned to New York, where she quickly became discontented with nursing and obtained a position as an assistant with the New York Public Library; this move put her in contact with the New Negro intelligentsia (Wall 92).

Larsen’s personal life, like her characters, exhibits a continuous quest to establish an identity for herself. But Larsen, if she ever did succeed in her quest for a sense of self, adroitly concealed it from her contemporaries and from the rest of the world. This concealment of her self is described by Wall in an interview with a reporter:

The interview concentrated on more personal concerns. The “unforgivable sin” was being bored, so [Larsen] selected only amusing and natural people, not too intellectual. She would never “pass,” because “with my economic status it’s better to be a Negro. So many things are excused them. The chained and downtrodden Negro is a picture that came out of the Civil War.” And while she claimed to be “not quite sure what she wanted to be spiritually,” she knew she “want[ed] things – beautiful and rich things.” (Wall 120).

Wall describes many more instances of Larsen’s flippancy in public, detailing the “considerable lengths” that Larsen utilized to “project a frivolous image” (Wall 120). The reasons for Larsen’s deceptive image is unclear, but Wall surmises that “behind its mask, one supposes, [Larsen] felt safe” (Wall 120). This “masquerade of femininity” is a major theme in Larsen’s novels, as also is transgressing social, racial, and gendered boundaries. The themes Larsen employs mark her as a Romantic novelist.

Winning At Backgammon Variant - Plakoto

Plakoto a variant of Backgammon is a popular game in Greece. The motive behind playing Plakoto is to bring all your checkers around to your own home board and then bear them off. The player who bears off all of his checkers first wins the game. This game is usually palyed along with the two other variants of backgammon, namely Fevga and Portes. Together these three games are called Tavli and are played in sequence usually one after the other. They have matches of three, five or seven points. A Bulgarian version of Plakoto is known as Tapa.

Every player has fifteen checkers to start with. These checkers are placed on opponent’s one-point. The players have to move their checkers in different direction on the Plakato board. At the start of the game each player rolls one dice and the player with the highest roll gets the chance to start. Unlike gammontutor.com/
Backgammon the player has to again roll the dice to begin his first turn. A player who has won a game starts the next game. The number of points, or pips, or the places a player can move his checkers is decided by the roll of the dice.

In the game of online backgammon Plakoto, a checker can be positioned only on an open point. An open point is the one that is not occupied by two or more checkers of the opponent. The numbers that appear after rolling the two dices make separate moves .For example, if a player rolls 4 and 2, he may move a checker four spaces to an open point and one more checker two spaces to an open point. A player also has an option to move a single checker to a totla of six spaces to an open point the precondition for this single move is that the intermediate points (four or two spaces from the starting point) must also be open.

The doubles in Plakoto are played twice. For example, a roll of 3-3 means that the player can use the three’s four times. If it’s possible the player must use both the numbers of a roll and all four numbers in the case he draws a double in the roll of dices.

Hitting is not allowed in the game of online backgammon Plakoto. In its place, if a player lands on a point occupied by an opponent’s single checker, the opponent cannot move his checker unless the player moves his checker. In other words the opponent’s checker is trapped. A block is created by two checkers of a player lying on a point or one of his checkers pinning the opponent’s checker.

Mother checker is the last checker on a player’s starting point. It is very important to win a online backgammon Plakoto game. If the mother checker gets pinned by opponent’s checker before it has left the starting point – the game is over and two points are lost. This particular rule has an exception if the opponent has his own mother checker at the starting point. A game in which mother checker of both the players are pinned results in a tie.

Bearing off in the game of online backgammon Plakoto starts after a player has moved all of his fifteen checkers on his home board. A player can bear off by rolling a number that corresponds to the point on which the checker is placed. If there is no checker on the point indicated by the roll, then the player has to make a legal move using a checker on a higher-numbered point. If there are no checkers on higher-numbered points, the player must remove a checker from the highest point that has a checker. In this way he can remove all of his checkers from the board

The first player who bears off all his fifteen checkers is declared as the winner of the game. If the losing player has successfully borne off at least one checker, he loses only one point; otherwise two points are lost.

Free Poker Tournaments-Making Extra Money While Having Fun

There are many different ways, or schemes to make money over the internet. One way that I found to be extremely enjoyable is the free signup poker tournaments that dish out fat cash prizes to the top challengers.

Yes my dear readers, you can earn money while having fun playing poker, there is no investment, just your time.

Usually all you have to do is just follow the instructions contained in the poker tournament listing. Some will ask you to e-mail them with some required personal information and e-mail, they will e-mail you back an entrance code for the specific tournament you have inquired about, some will just tell you where to go to get that code. Fairly easy to do.

These online poker tournaments are called free sign in and are listed on different online poker sites. Some are run by the poker rooms themselves, and some are ran by other sponsors, usually you have to register in order to receive the free password to enter the tournament.

In these free roll tournaments players’ numbers are usually limited and they vary in sizes of players and cash prizes. I have seen some free roll tournaments that have prizes in the thousands of dollars, and all it takes is five minutes of your precious time to sign up. And believe me, its worth it. The fact that you get to play against others (real people) sure makes that old adrenaline pump go into over gear as you get to bet for free, yet win real money. For some of us experienced poker players it can be a great income extension for them extra dollars.

You can find these tournaments listings in most poker rooms around the net and in most affiliated casino review sites, some of which sponsor tournaments themselves. All you have to do is just look in your favorite search engine under online poker tournaments and a huge selection for you to choos from will come up.

Babylon 5 (Season 2) DVD Review

Nominated for 6 Emmys and 3 Hugo Awards in its five-season run, Babylon 5 changed the landscape of the TV science fiction series genre. Following on the heels of hit series such as Star Trek and Star Trek: The Next Generation, Babylon 5 is unrivaled by any of its peers in its application of special effects. The brainchild of J. Michael Straczynski (writer for such shows as Murder She Wrote and Walker, Texas Ranger), the hour-long sci-fi drama series breaks new ground by deploying a five-season storyline that follows the outline of a traditional novel. As such, Babylon 5 is more like a mini-series that lasts five years instead of the usual three to five nights. And also unlike its predecessors, the series showcases original advanced technologies, believable alien characters (who speak alien and not English), and boasts of superb costume and makeup. Premiering in mid-season 1994, Babylon 5 established a solid audience and continues to inspire new generations of fans via syndicated reruns on cable…

The Babylon 5 (Season 2) DVD features a number of exciting episodes including the season premiere “Points of Departure” in which the hierarchy of the Babylon 5 crew is significantly shuffled when Commander Sinclair is replaced by Capt. John J. Sheridan. Immediately, the new commander is tasked with reigning in a renegade Mimbari ship that threatens the safety of the Babylon 5 constituents… Other notable episodes from Season 2 include “Soul Mates” in which Londo calls his three wives to Babylon 5 where he divorces two of them, and “In the Shadow of Z’ha’dum” in which Capt. Sheridan is shocked to encounter a living crew member of the ship which exploded with his wife onboard, providing him a glimmer of hope that she may yet be alive…
