Get in on the Action with New Video Releases

Many people are so crazy about new video releases that they practically stand in line at 5 a.m. just to be the first ones to enter the video store. They always make sure that they have a copy of video release guides because they are so are adamant about keeping up with new video releases. They use these guides to circle and highlight the releases they must see, the ones they have already seen, and the ones that belong in the must-miss category.

To be honest, I go even further than most new video releases fans. I always list the new titles that come up when a new video release shoots across the screen. I used to wait too long for the new releases so I developed this compulsion to make lists of coming attractions.

You see, I used to be an English teacher at a nearby community college. I would have to wait until the semester closes to save new video releases because I would get so busy in the prepping, teaching, paper-reading processes and activities.

I would hit the video rental store and rent a stack of pictures as soon as the grades were finally in. The new video releases list has gotten longer than I would like and the ritual of racing to the video rental store has happened far too infrequently. My favorite actors have now made numerous films that I have yet to see.

I now feel clueless when Academy Awards week arrives. My friends and I used to dress up, make appropriate dinner foods, and scream on Academy Awards night. I realized that I have to update my list to include such movies as Mr. and Mrs. Smith, with Brad and Angelina Jolie. I also want to include movies by my absolute favorite, Nicholas Cage.

He has done a lot of films over the last two years that I have not had a chance to swoon over. I am disgustingly at a loss for the brilliant Nick in Lords of War, National Treasure 2 and The Weather Man. I also cannot wait for his movies that fall under the new video releases category.

Karaoke Machines For Sale

Music is the gateway to the soul, and singing is perhaps the cab that gets people across. People lose a lot of inhibition when they sing out loud, and very often, this opens the barriers between hearts and minds. Even if the voice has no professional technique, singing is still a great experience.

Public singing requires some courage. However, it is something that audiences and performers enjoy. After live performances, one of the best ways for people to enjoy other people singing is karaoke. Karaoke is a relatively new art form, with a history of only about 35 years. The trend originated in Japan as a form of entertainment on vacations. The credit for the creation of the first karaoke machine goes to Japanese singer and entrepreneur Inoue Daisuke. He never sold the machines, but instead preferred to lease them. Although initially scoffed at as a temporary fad, within a short period of time karaoke machine become a popular feature of nightclubs and entertainment bars worldwide. Despite the heavy pricing, people were open to the idea of singing to the voiceless tunes of famous stars. It became a way for strangers to interact with each other and embarrass themselves in the process. It also became a substitute for live performances and soon people were rushing to karaoke bars instead of places where bands played. Karaoke machines were also responsible for promoting vocalists who had talent but no band to back them up.

It did not take long for the karaoke trend to reach the West. By the 1980s, many nightclubs and comedy clubs in the United States and Canada were equipped with karaoke machines. Original these machines had to be imported from Japan, but very soon local manufactures entered the karaoke machine scene and the prices of karaoke bars fell drastically. Nowadays, many people opt for karaoke machines at home to entertain party guests and with this rise in popularity, karaoke machine sales have gone up and their prices have shot down.

Private Investigators on TV - Randall and Hopkirk (Diseased)

This 1969 British TV series, Randall and Hopkirk (Diseased), introduced the rather bizarre concept of one half of a private detective team being a ghost, having died in a hit and run accident, during a routine divorce investigation. Rather extreme for divorce, you might think - and thereby hangs a tale.

The ghost and brains of the operation is one Marty Hopkirk (played by Kenneth Cope), who appears to his, rather less bright partner, Jeff Randall (Mike Pratt), while Randall is visiting Hopkirk’s grave in the cemetery. Of course, being a ghost, Marty wears the obligatory white suit.

The object of Hopkirk’s appearance is to help Randall find his (Hopkirk’s) killer which in due course, they do. This taste of success leaves Marty wanting to stay around and help Jeff with further cases. He is also self-appointed guardian of Jeff’s life in general, including his driving and his personal life, on which Marty comments liberally and without invitation, to the point of nagging mercilessly.

The other main character is Jeannie played by Annette Andre, Marty’s widow, to whom Marty is still very attached. Marty is extremely jealous and makes sure that things go wrong if ever another man takes an interest in Jeannie. To make matters worse, Jeannie joins Jeff at the agency and in the course of their work, they become quite close. Of course, Marty doesn’t stand for that either and takes steps to ensure that something always prevents their actually getting together.

The amusing thread of the series is that only Jeff Randall can see and speak to Marty Hopkirk, and often finds himself in conversation with another, live person, while Marty stands behind him nagging and reminding him what to say. Jeff is sometimes seen apparently talking to himself, which makes matters awkward, particularly with Jeannie. Despite Marty’s best efforts, he never does manage to contact Jeannie.

The original series only ran for 26 episodes, but remains as a fond memory to its small following.

In the year 2000, however, the series came around again on BBC1 in the UK starring Vic Reeves as Hopkirk, Bob Mortimer as Randall and Emilia Fox as Jeannie. I guess they wouldn’t have done that if the original hadn’t had a fair popularity.

Outlook Poems - (Love, Life & God- Part I)

Poems about Life, God and Love

1) Frosty Minnesota March

Dennis

“Mother, you look so cold?”

(She’s gazing out the window, she loves winter time, its frightful cold this evening, though, and winters turn into a lion.)

Dennis

“Mother, I’m going south for the rest of March—come along, the winters too long for me!”

(She simply looks into my eyes says :) “The South, go on, let me be!”

Dennis

“Sweet mother dear—tomorrow they say, comes another storm!”

(Here cold eyes now look at me, says with a gleaming eye and smile :) “Then take me to Las Vegas or let me just freeze!”

2) Jesus’ Riddle to John

Jesus once said to John, a riddle, “Answer if you can…: must I die for God, or must I die for man?”

(John bewildered couldn’t say, he just lowered his eyes and prayed.)

“I take their sins…” Jesus said, “I feel their pain, from Monday through the Sabbath: in cities, nooks and valleys, and in allies, as they hide their selves from me, to sin some more in quite, as if I can’t see…!”

(John still looked bewildered but said :) “I guess you’ll die for me!”

3) Life, God and Love
(The king eater)

Saddam Hussein, he wanted to be king of kings, like Nebuchadnezzar, and so he was—:

At the end of his quest, he: crawled out of a hole, when captured; he grunted like a hog when he was judged—and he heard the hooves of the deadly horses approaching, the roars of anger by his henchmen, when he was hung.

4) Love Leaves a Debt

I am an old lover, and cry to all yokels out there:

Love a day, and for a time
For love is grim, and seldom kind….

To all you lovers have good heed
Love fades without a word, or deed.

And: —

Love always leaves an unpaid debt—
For one always loves more than the other

(and that one never gets)!

The Beauty of Nature’s Grief [A prose poem]

The Beauty of Nature’s Grief
[A prose poem]

The days in winter are piercing, insightful to the point of gloom!

Ah! There is amazement in the spell of this moment (produced by the sky), putting one’s self into a trance almost—, earnestly, drawing one’s fleeting look into the passion and imagination of the dim winter sky. Quietness, aloneness; branches from trees afar, reach into my view of the horizon (its sun bent redness, is putting on its chastity-belt, for soon twilight will dominate, will bend her into dusk. Only the littleness of it all do I see, its remoteness, from where I am in this here café looking out—, thus, the colors in the evening sky seem to have a melody to its dim rainbow. They say, as I think, “Reflect!” for in the grandeur of it all, the moment is soon lost, yes indeed, lost without dedication: twilight will pass.

All the same, these images in me somehow found this poem: projected from the birth of this here evening—to this intensity.

My nerves were tense today, now as I write, transmit (the evening away), the calls and ripples of the evening have calmed me.

The sky now yellow, red, tints of blue—, that skeleton of a tree still in my view; the sky confuses me somewhat. Yet it’s just one sunset out of many melting down. Perhaps the insensitiveness if it all, of the sky: for the sky irritates me tonight! I don’t want it to flee, eternally; even though I may see a new one tomorrow, “Let it be!” I say (but that’s desire, control, pride speaking).

The examining of beauty, if it sees you (and you it), will disappear if you do not grab its grief! (And so I have.)

Ps. As I read my hand writing of this poem I just looked up—the gloom has taken over the sky…! (2/5/06: 5:43 PM ((Sunday))

The History of Airbrushing

Since World War I, many artists and painters have implemented modern technology into their art form. Airbrushes and the development of their use began its popularity almost literally at the same time in Europe and the United States. These movements were started by both Man Ray (New York City) and Wassily Kandinsky at the Bauhaus School in Germany.

Airbrushes were initially used by Man Ray in New York to develop paintings in the year 1917. However, in 1933 in Europe, the fear of Communism was emerging. Because of this fear, the Bauhaus school was closed down by the Nazis. At this time, most of the leaders in the airbrush movement immigrated to the United States. The New Bauhaus school was eventually started in Chicago; ironically, most often considered the home of the airbrush industry in America.

Since then, the airbrush has been used for a variety of different art forms and projects. From temporary tattooing and commercial art to sunless tanning and cake decorating, airbrush supplies are a fairly large market. Many retailers offer a wide range of kits, compressors, hoses, paints, stencils and tools for your every airbrush need. The popularity of the art movement has taken the consumer industry by storm.

Rap Music - History and Genres

Those who are young or relatively new to the HipHop culture don’t realize that Rap Music has many different genres:

East Coast: The East Coast, most notably New York City, was the genesis for rap music hitting the mainstream. Run-D.M.C. led the pack, with Rakim and Big Daddy Kane also breaking through to make rap emerge as a national phenomenon.

West Coast: While HipHop was cooking in the East, West Coast rap music gained national recognition in the mid-1980s with performers like Ice T and Too $hort.

Dirty South: While most of the music world’s attention focused on rap coming from New York and Los Angeles, HipHop artists in the South were turning to independent music labels to release their work. Geographically, the Dirty South genre encompassed places as diverse as Houston, Birmingham, and Miami, and was greatly influenced by Ghetto Mafia in the mid-1990s. Musically, Dirty South rap is known for is danceabilty and rhythmic delivery.

Gangsta Rap: Some say Gangsta Rap first emerged on the West Coast with N.W.A.’s “Straight Outta Compton” release, while others credit Ice T with taking Gangsta Rap to national acclaim. Characterized by lyrics glamorizing elements of a criminal lifestyle, violence, promiscuity, misogyny, and materialism, Gangsta Rap’s controversy came to a head with the murder of the West Coast Tupcac Shakur in 1996, and the subsequent murder of the East Coast’s The Notorious B.I.G. in 1997.

Pop Rap: Known for its widespread, mainstream appeal, Pop Rap’s first breakout star was LL Cool J. The Fresh Prince and MC Hammer quickly rose to the top of the Pop Rap scene and the music charts with lyrics that were less controversial than those of the Gangsta Rap genre, and thus were more likely to receive radio airplay.

Christian Rap: While HipHop was garnering a reputation for less than savory lyrics and artists for questionable activities, other artists were expressing their faith through HipHop. Christian Rap took off in the late 1980s and early 1990s with rap groups like P.I.D. and S.F.C.

Jazz Rap: Although Jazz Rap has never enjoyed mainstream commercial success, the genre often incorporates Afrocentric and political themes. Gang Starr and Gil Scott-Heron are often cited as two of the first Jazz rappers.

Conscious HipHop: Similar to Jazz Rap, Conscious HipHop has never enjoyed mass commercial success. With an emphasis on social issues, Conscious HipHop isn’t overtly political, but rather deals with issues such as poverty and religion.

Electro HipHop: A combination of dance music and rap, Electro HipHop first emerged in the 1980s on the West Coast from artists like Arabian Prince and Egyptian Lover. By the mid-1990s, Electro HipHop had pretty much run its course.

The Canadian Tire Guy Must be Stopped!

There is a cruel and heavy cross that all Canadians have had unfairly thrust upon their shoulders. No I’m not talking about Canada’s federal politicians. Paul Martin and Stephen Harper are more akin to albatross slung around the nation’s neck (fodder for another day). No dear reader, I am referring to the national scourge of the North – the ‘Canadian Tire Guy.’

For any of our American readers who may not be up to speed on this scoundrel, the Canadian Tire Guy is a nosy neighbor/spokesperson for a Canadian hardware chain that always shows up in your yard (uninvited) and proceeds to lecture you that:

A. Your tools are utter shite, and
B. You are verging on being an imbecile because you are so incompetent

Sounds like a great neighbor, eh?

Next thing you know, he, his wife and that chubby kid of theirs are going to pop up uninvited in my bedroom to tell me that I am pleasuring my wife incorrectly and then he will do a plug for the Canadian Tire ‘long life, battery operated dildo with the adjustable twin heads…’

This man needs to be stopped!

If he shows up in your yard, could you please do us all a favor and push the pompous bastard headfirst into the Canadian Tire brand wood chipper that he is hawking?

Thanks a bunch.
