Apple, Disney Studios, Warner Brothers, NBC Universal and even George Lucas herald a change in the way movies are made and ultimately delivered to the public.

Apple in recent days has attempted to stake a claim on the movie download market by striking a deal with Disney Studios to deliver movie down loads. Earlier this year Warner Brothers announced an agreement with the software firm Bit torrent to enable movie downloads to your computer. Bit torrent’s software application has long been the choice of peer to peer file sharing pirates because it allows fast downloads of large files and uses very little bandwidth.

Last week Apple together with Disney studios jumped into the movie down load market and offered two key features to it’s movie download service. First it uses the ipod as the device for downloading. Second, knowing that the ultimate viewing choice for movies for the public will be the television or home theatre. Apple indicates it will introduce a set top box to work with the TV thus bridging the gap between internet delivery and end user’s desired viewing choice.

This puts Apple in a position to capture a middleman role and to make money on a device to ease the process between the down load and final choice of viewing medium. But Bit Torrent is already working with Warner Brothers and will probably leap frog Apple’s device sooner or later by allowing direct downloads to your TV receiver, fast, high quality and immediately playable using a high speed cable line to do it. And to go with this instant down load will be the option to burn to a DVD or store the movie on the hard drive of your tivo box or similar device.

George Lucas in an interview with CNBC earlier this year and again last week stated that the movie companies and Hollywood would have to adapt sooner or later to the new digital age, of production and distribution. When asked about file sharing and bit torrent specifically Lucas stated that it would be the future of Hollywood and that Steve Jobs and others had already grasped that concept.

In No Limit Holdem, it seems it can’t be stressed enough the importance of the decision making process on any given play. I’m writing this for my own good as much as for anyone else who may be struggling in this area. Making bad calls, checks, or raises in my game is the #1 offender to my loss ratio. For example, the tourney in question I am referring to one player limped, all else folded to the big stack. Big stack raises to 400(blinds 50/100), I have 99 and push to roughly 2400. Honestly looking at it in retrospect, with 99 here, I would be hard pressed to even call this bet let alone raise all my chips. It was too early in the tournament to make a play like this. The limper folds, the big stack calls, turns over QQ and I lose the tourney.

The factors I should have taken 15 to 30 seconds to think about were my position and the myriad of hands I could have put him on that would allow me to make the proper DECISION about my action. Instead, in my mind, I wanted to “gamble” at that point in the tourney because all I could see was what position that would put me in had I won the hand. Does this sound familiar to anyone?

There’s also a large mental block here that has been creating hindrances in my recent game performance. I have been finding myself wanting to blame other things besides my own play (the site, “luck”, other players’ actions/attitudes, the rng, etc.). Does this sound familiar, too? I’m not trying to call anyone out or pinpoint a particular player by asking those questions, just trying to provoke thought about your game in these areas. Yes, referring back to the above hand analysis given, poker is very situational. But, in that instance, I believe the “situational” excuse could have been left out of the equation.

In introduction to a Rhizome the authors define a rhizome as being able to, “connect any point to any other point, and its traits are not necessarily linked to traits of the same nature; it brings into play very different regimes of signs, and even non-sign states.” (21) They apply this idea to literature and language and in the process deconstruct widely held ideas of both of those subjects.

Early in the chapter the authors declare, “…there is no language in itself, nor are there any linguistic universals, only a throng of dialects, patois, slangs and specialized languages.” (7) Since the capacity for language is something we are born with, then one cannot attribute a beginning or ending to language which makes it a perfect example of a rhizome. According to the authors Rhizomes lack beginnings or endings and have the ability to connect ideas and objects that seemingly have no connection, no common denominator if you will. Language does exactly that.

When you take one group that speaks one language and another that speaks a different language, in order to communicate, they create a pidgin tongue. Pidgin is very basic way to communicate, yet when their offspring are born that pidgin language forms itself into a full fledged language with its own rules and syntax, etc. Much of what we consider Creole language is formed in this manner.

Later in the essay the authors discus American Literature and how it represents the idea of the Rhizome. Unlike other more homogenous cultures America is a salad bowl of people, culture and ideas. We are the land of immigrants from most every continent, along with an indigenous population that managed to survive the throng of immigrants.

All of these seeming disparate pieces have come together to form a national identity as “American” yet all of the elements are different: different cultures, language, religion. Since our country is so different than that difference would find its way into our literature as well.

There is no uniquely American identity that one can draw on, unlike in English literature there can be an English experience or say a French experience in French literature or even a Japanese experience where Japan is concerned. Our American literature would draw upon all of those aspects of America: the cultures, the language, the foods to create an American identity that could be written about, this Americaness because rhizomatic in its creation as it takes these different ideas and turn them into our America, our literature.

So what do you think of the Golden State Warriors? All right, so they are a .500 team, nothing to get excited about. However, a closer look finds that the young Warriors are a sizzling 14-6 SU, 13-7 ATS at home, but a miserable 4-13 SU, 7-10 ATS on the road. Not all teams that this extreme, of course, but it’s essential to understand that home/road breakdown is most important when examining basketball handicapping.

This is also commonplace in college hoops. It’s important to focus on where the site that a basketball game is being played, especially with college basketball conference play taking place. Spend some time going through the records, straight up and against the spread, of your favorite college and pro hoops teams and you’ll be amazed at some of the differences.

Some college teams will shoot lights out at home, averaging 78 points per game. Yet, the same players can turn into certified masons on the road averaging 59 points per game. Several things are taking place. For serious sports bettors, it’s important to identify these valuable wagering facets, apply meaning, and incorporate into your handicapping.

Eastern Michigan of the MAC currently has a 5-3 record at home where the defense is allowing 65 ppg. Yet, on the road the Broncos are a very different team at 1-4 SU, 0-4 ATS allowing 76 ppg! What the heck happens to their defense on the road? Basically, they leave it at home!

It’s not relegated to college hoops, either. Examine some of the home/road records of NBA teams over the years. One of the best examples I ever found was the Denver Nuggets in 2000-01. That season, the Nuggets were an average team with a 40-42 overall record. But going a step further, something remarkable takes shape: Denver had a winning spread record at home where they were 29-12 straight up, yet on the road, a completely different team showed up, where the Nuggets were 11-30 straight up and 16-25 against the spread!

There are many reasons as to why this takes place. One is pride, as team want to play all out to defend their home turf. Another reason is emotion as the home crowd will be rooting for their team to give 100%. This is why opposing coaches are so quick to call a time out when they see the home crowd going wild, as they want to stem that momentum before the game gets away.

Confidence and being comfortable are two other reasons. Teams at home are comfortable with the surroundings, the arena, the lighting, etc. They practice and prepare each day in that same arena, so going on the road things can change completely.

And experience is another factor to consider. Professional handicappers take careful note of rosters and identify which teams have an excess of youth and ones that have experience. The first example I gave, Golden State, happens to have a roster full of young players. Veteran teams, like the Spurs and Miami Heat, can be less spooked on the road as they have so many games under their belt. Notice that Miami is 8-9 at home and 7-10 on the road, not that much of a difference. A young Washington Wizards team? 14-3 at home, 6-11 on the road!

From a bettor’s perspective this offers opportunities “to play on” a young team at home and “go against them” when traveling. I’m still waiting for my young Cleveland Cavaliers to turn that corner: The Cavs are sensational at home again (15-3), yet a money-burning 7-10 SU, 6-11 ATS on the road. When a talented young team begins to start to win and cover on the road, that can be an excellent opportunity to begin backing that group before oddsmakers catch up. But until they turn that corner, be careful and examine home/road stats VERY carefully!
