Roulette Secrets – The Secret Of Successful Roulette Is

There are many authors and gurus on the net who claim to have found the roulette secrets that will enable you to gain an edge in your quest for roulette profits, however are their “secrets” that can be exploited for profit?

Roulette secrets implies that someone can show you something that know one else knows or has not discovered about roulette.

This of course is not true, as there are no secrets to playing roulette and everything about the game is known. While there are no roulette secrets, there are right ways to play and if you learn it you can put the odds in your favor.

Let’s have a look at the myth of “roulette secrets” and how to play properly without them to make more money

Roulette Secret. You Can Use a Mathematical System to Predict Spins

No you can’t!

Roulette is a game of chance and each spin of the roulette ball is unrelated to any previous spins.

For example, if the ball falls on red 20 times in a row, players feel that black has a higher chance of coming up next but of course it doesn’t a roulette ball has no memory the chances are 50 -50

Many players also like to look for, and bet on, ’sleeping numbers’ - numbers that have not been hit for a while.

Just because a number has been, ’sleeping’, does not mean it is more likely that the number will come up on the next spin.

Mathematical systems can’t work by their very nature in roulette.

Quite simply, mathematical systems require reliable data, and with roulette, there is no past data that can be used – it’s a random game of chance.

In mathematics, you know exactly what is going to happen next, in a game of chance you never know what is going to happen next!
Any system that claims to make money consistently from roulette is a contradiction in terms.

Secret 2. You Can Use Money Management to Gain an Edge
Money management does not affect the house advantage.

For money management to work, you need to increase your bet size when the odds are in your favor, and decrease bet size when they are not.

The odds and payouts are set in the casino’s favor, and this edge never changes.

The house always has an advantage due to the amount paid out per bet; you cannot change it and put the odds in your favor

There are no roulette “secrets” however the good news is you can play with the odds in your favor as much as any other player with these simple tips

1. Play European Roulette

There are two roulette wheels the American and European.
The wheel to play is the European, as it reduces the casino advantage to 2.63% which doubles your advantage of winning as it doesn’t have the extra 00.

2. Place Bets that are close to their Payouts

Place bets whose odds almost match their payouts - these “even money” bets include, betting on Even, Odd, Low (numbers 1 - 18), High (numbers 19 - 36), Red, or Black. All these payout even 1 - 1

The best bet of all which most players don’t take advantage of is:

The bet ‘en prison.’ If you make even money bet and the ball lands on zero, you don’t lose your bet.

Instead, your bet is ‘imprisoned’ (hence the name) and you carry it forward to the next spin.

If the bet wins, you remove it from the table. The house edge is just 1.35% on this bet and it is the bet with the best odds in roulette.

Roulette is a game of chance, and there are no roulette secrets to increase the odds in your favor, but if you know how to play you can get great odds for a game of chance.

If you want to play a game that’s fun and can give you a good chance of winning then roulette offers a unique playing experience.

So, forget roulette secrets follow the simple tips above and enjoy the game

Science in Gulliver’s Travels, Part Two

While in Lagado, Gulliver investigates the grand Academy of Projectors and describes many of their current investigations, which seem pointless and useless for the benefit of mankind.

The first project in Swift’s satire is that of “extracting Sun-beams out of Cucumbers” which had been worked on for eight years at the Academy (Swift 171). The scientist working on this project stated the purpose of it as being “to supply the Governors Gardens with Sun-shine at a reasonable Rate” (Swift 171). Here Swift describes scientific studies that are undertaken to improve on something that has no necessity of being improved. In this case, it is ridiculous to try to improvise sunshine because the sun is readily available to all. This satire may have been based on the “recent investigations of John Hales into the action of sunlight in promoting the respiration of plants” (Turner 334).

Next Gulliver encounters a projector who had been working on the same study since he had come to the Academy many years ago. His experiment was:

an Operation to reduce human Excrement to its original Food, by separating the several Parts, removing the Tincture which it receives from the Gall, making the Odour exhale, and scumming off the Saliva (Swift 172).

This project shows the futility of scientific experiments that will have no useful benefit for mankind, because no matter what he does to restore the excrement to its original form no one is going to want to consume it. This project satirizes scientists’ tendencies to expend large amounts of time, money, and energy on investigations which are useless and even largely ridiculous.

The physical description of the two aforementioned scientists satirizes how scientists are neglectful of their appearance and personal hygiene. The first projector is a man of “meagre aspect” with “sooty hands and face” (Swift 171). His hair and beard are worn long and are “ragged and singed in several places” (Swift 171). The second scientist is described as the:

most ancient Student of the Academy. His Face and Beard were of a pale yellow; his Hands and Clothes dawbed over with Filth (Swift 171-72).

Swift attempts to show that scientists, being so immersed in their studies, neglect their outward appearance, which makes them an object of ridicule in polite society.

Swift also satirizes scientists for undertaking projects that they claim will improve upon current practices when there is nothing wrong with the present system. One of these projects described is that of an architect who asserts humans should follow the practices of bees and spiders in building houses “by beginning at the Roof and working downwards to the Foundation” (Swift 172). While this works well for bees and spiders, it is plainly ridiculous for humans to do so.

Other projects that Gulliver encounters include using hogs to plow and fertilize farmland, instead of the traditional method of cattle and man made plows. This new method of plowing does not make the system any better, but rather “the Charge and Trouble” was found to be “very great” (Swift 172). Furthermore, this method produced “little or no Crop” (Swift 172). Nonetheless, the scientists refuse to give up their project as fruitless, and continue working on the invention.

Another projector counsels Gulliver that using spiders’ webs for thread instead of silkworms is infinitely much better. He maintains that by feeding the spiders with flies of different colors their webs would be of many different colors, which would save people from having to dye the silk. This is another instance of trying to replace a current way of doing things in which there is nothing wrong with the present system.
Swift’s attitudes concerning science and scientists become explicit in his descriptions of the experiments of the “universal artist” (Swift 175).

The Artist himself was at that Time busy upon two great designs:

The first, to sow Land with Chaff, wherein he affirmed the true seminal Virtue to be contained, as he demonstrated by several Experiments which I was not skilful enough to comprehend. The other was, by a certain Composition of Gums, Minerals, and Vegetables outwardly applied, to prevent the Growth of Wool upon two young Lambs; and he hoped in a reasonable Time to propagate the Breed of naked Sheep all over the Kingdom (Swift 175).

Sowing land with chaff is “the traditional images for wasted labor” (Turner 336). This reveals Swift’s belief that most of the work of scientists is only so much wasted labor. The experiments of trying to breed naked sheep delineate Swift’s belief that studying animals is useless for mankind; how would sheep with no wool benefit people?

After Gulliver visits the scientists working on utilitarian projects, he goes to see some of the inventions classified under speculative sciences. The first invention he investigates is a “Frame” that is designed to improve “speculative knowledge by practical and mechanical Operations” (Swift 175). This Frame consists of all the words in the English language written on pieces of paper which were then pasted onto bits of wood. By turning a handle, the words shifted around as the bits of wood were moved. By using this Frame, the scientist claimed that “the most ignorant person” could “write Books in Philosophy, Poetry, Politicks, Law, Mathematicks and Theology, without the least Assistance from Genius or Study” (Swift 176). In this passage, Swift is satirizing people’s desire to gain knowledge through artificial means instead of reading and studying for the attainment of knowledge.

Another instance of attaining knowledge by artificial means is seen in the project of teaching mathematics to students by writing the information on a “thin Wafer with Ink composed of a Cephalick Tincture” (Swift 178). The students were required to swallow these wafers “upon a fasting stomach and for three Days following eat nothing but Bread and Water” (Swift 178). This was supposed to work by as the wafer would be digested, the “Tincture mounted to his brain” carrying the information with it (Swift 178). This project was unsuccessful due to the “perverseness” of the students who refused to adhere to the scientist’s instructions regarding fasting.

In the School of Languages, Gulliver finds projectors who are endeavoring to make the English language more efficient. The methods proposed are: (1) to “shorten discourse by cutting Polysyllables into one, and leaving out Verbs and Participles”; and (2) to abolish all words altogether. In this last method, people would communicate with physical objects which they would “carry about” with them to “express the particular Business they are to discourse on” (Swift 177).

This proposal was not very successful with the women and the “Vulgar and Illiterate” who demanded to be able to “speak with their Tongues, after the Manner of their Forefathers” (Swift 177). Nonetheless, many of the “Learned and Wise” accepted the use of this method of communication. Swift shows the ludicrousness of this method by describing the inconveniences of it:

I have often beheld two of those Sages almost sinking under the Weight of their Packs, like Pedlars among us; who when they met in the Streets would lay down their Loads, open their Sacks, and hold Conversation for an Hour together; then put up their Implements, help each other to resume their Burthens, and take their Leave (Swift 178).

This passage demonstrates how some projects are not only useless to mankind, but detrimental also. Such a scenario as this would cause unnecessary physical strain, which would lead to many serious health problems.

In the School of political projectors, Swift has Gulliver denounce what Swift himself is in favor of; namely that monarchs choose people to fill posts based upon their “Wisdom, Capacity, and Virtue” (Swift 179). The projectors also propose that “Ministers consult the publick Good” and that people should be rewarded based upon “Merit, great Abilities, and eminent Services” (Swift 179). Gulliver takes the opposite side and calls these scientists “unhappy people” who are “wholly out of their Senses” (Swift 179). While this practice of choosing people for employment and favors based upon merit would be useful for mankind, Swift shows (through Gulliver’s deprecation of it) how most people would not appreciate this being put into practice since most do not achieve their posts due to their merit.

Perhaps the most useless project described in Gulliver’s Travels is that of “discovering Plots and Conspiracies against the Government” (Swift 182). The projector claims that by examining the excrement of a person minutely, one would be able to “form a Judgment of their Thoughts and Designs” (Swift 182).

Gulliver informs the projector of his own country’s manner of discovering plots, which are equally ludicrous:

It is first agreed and settled among them, what suspected Persons Shall be accused of a Plot: Then effectual Care is taken to secure All their Letters and other Papers, and put the Owners in Chains. These Papers are delivered to a Set of Artists very dextrous [sic] in Finding out the mysterious Meanings of Words, Syllables, and Letters. For instance, they can decypher a Close-stool to signify A Privy-Council; a Flock of Geese, a Senate; a lame Dog, an Invader; The Plague, a standing Army, a Buzard…(Swift 183).

In this passage, Swift satirizes people’s ability to twist words and phrases into meaning whatever they wish them to mean, disregarding the obvious meaning of the words and phrases contained in the letters and other papers of suspected insurgents.

Thus in the voyage to Laputa, Swift gives his view of science and scientists. He satirizes their absentmindedness, their detachment from humanity, their disregard for studying mankind, and their lack of social graces. Swift views much of scientific studies as a waste of time, money, and energy in that it does little to benefit mankind. This view of Swift’s is expressed through his satires of scientific projects.

Canonizing the Musical Expression with Video-jockeying!

The enigma of interweaving visual aesthetics to the tunes of a sonic ambience has reached pinnacles of success through Video Jockeying over the last decade. This new genre of culmination of art and technology, planning and spontaneity, imagination and visualization, found its roots in 1966 when Andy Warhol hosted a ‘Happening’ in New York’s New Cinematheque. On that day, for the first time, Warhol projected silent excerpts of his own films to live music played by The Velvet Underground. The trend snowballed with improvisations by Pink Floyd and integration of laser lights by Jean-Michel Jarre. Live music shows were now becoming a scintillating experience with computer graphics and psychedelic affects, juxtaposing frames from different modes of media (films, newspaper, documentaries and magazines). By the early-mid 1980s, every pop album had to be accompanied with a music video to make it to the charts! MTV was born due to the overwhelming number of music videos produced. The term ‘VJ’ was coined to tag the MTV host, a metamorphosis from a DJ. Over the years, with the wide popularity of this transposition, VJ no longer meant the MTV announcer, but a visual affect choreographer, remixer, producer and performer!

In addition to the creative acumen of the new genre of VJs, technology provided a host of devices/tools to popularize this imaginative form of art. Hallucinogenic experiences were created with the advent of digital imagery, audio-visualizer software and analogue/digital video mixers. Other popular hardware in the VJ’s arsenal include the Edirol V4, Pansonic MX & AVE series mixers and Korg’s Entrancer effects unit. The Edirol V4 is a 4-channel Video Mixer made for portable or fixed installation use. It is ideal for use in nightclubs, places of worship, theatres, and other live performances. With an enhanced V-LINK feature coupled for the multimedia geeks, the user can trigger clips, and perform real-time video effects and transitions. The Korg PAD entrancer is a completely new type of video effect processor with a touch panel for fingertip control over images and sounds. A wide new range of intuitive visual effects may be created by different motions of the finger over the pad. It can even record the movement of your finger allowing the facility to reproduce complex authentic visual effects very easily. The Chromascope video synthesizer creates abstract 2-dimensional automated colored patterns in full PAL resolution. The Pioneer DVJ-X1 is one of the latest inclusions in a VJ’s kit, empowering him to synchronize digital audio and video simultaneously to create an elite musical expression. This device made its debut in spring 2004.

Vjamm, Motiondive, Arkaos, Touch and Smode are some of the trendiest software tools available to create the mesmerizing video affects, where the VJ’s creativity has no limits! VJamm, the audio-visual VJ software is a realtime sample player featuring extremely fast response times with MIDI support and 16 simultaneous channels of AV with live effects. Clips can be dragged real-time with the clicks of a mouse for imaginative compositions. The tool also allows creation of personal effects and is compatible with any video cards, limited only by the graphic card’s performance. Smode Studio is another complete performance solution for an excellent VJ performance allowing real-time visual composition with 3D objects, pictures and videos with exquisite detail.

With the proliferation of MTV-genre of music channels and its growing popularity, the young-generation in India has found a new avenue to explore their creativity. As per Aditya Dev Sood, CEO CKS, a user research and interaction design firm, “Veejaying is in fact the new avatar of technology, music and video, a jugalbandi of DJ and VJ”.

Big Brother 7 - Meet the Contestants - Part Three

Continuing the introduction of the housemates entering the seventh series of reality TV show Big Brother, here are four of the seven men prepared to miss this summer’s World Cup to try and last 13 weeks in the UK’s most intense goldfish bowl environment.

Pete BENNETT
Age: 24. From: London. Occupation: Unemployed.
Pete is a budding rock ‘n’ roll singer and cartoonist now living in Brighton. He was diagnosed with Tourette’s Syndrome at the age of 14, started wearing women’s clothes aged 16 and impersonated Freddie Mercury at his mother’s wedding. When asked why he wanted to participate on Big Brother he replied: “to reach the top of my spiral to heaven and shine again. Also, if I was to win the money I would like to pay off my mum’s mortgage so she can finally live her life because she looked after me for so long. And I crave fame and would like to be a famous Touretter”. Pete lives alone except for a pet hamster called Magic, who roams freely around his house and lives in the wall.

Shabaz CHAUDRY
Age: 37. From: Glasgow. Occupation: Unemployed.
Shabaz is single and has been “unemployable” for the last 21 years, although has done a lot of voluntary care work since he was 16, helping the disabled and people with special needs in his local community. He admits that he has never been in love and has never had a boyfriend as he thinks men are afraid of his flamboyant personality. When asked why he wanted to be on Big Brother he replied: “because I’ve never had the flatmate or housemate experience as I’ve lived by myself for nearly 21 years and I want to challenge myself”. He claims he has a phobia of straight-acting homophobic homosexuals and would like to be reincarnated as a woman so that he can have children.

Richard NEWMAN
Age: 33. From: Canada. Occupation: Waiter.
Richard is single, lives in London and describes himself as a “sexual, passionate and hostile man hunter”. He loves going out all night in Soho and making conquests, but equally enjoys dinner parties and the theatre. When asked why he wanted to go on Big Brother, he replied simply: “just for the money”. He says the person he would least like to find in the house is a woman who is eight months pregnant. He has a strong fear of them and even fears being interviewed by Davina McCall when he leaves the house. Sexism, racism and men who turn down his advances make him angry and if he could pass any law it would be that all straight men must have a homosexual encounter.

Glyn WISE
Age:18. From: Blaenau Ffestiniog. Occupation: Part-time lifeguard / Head boy in 6th Form.
Glyn is the youngest member of the Big Brother house and is looking forward to receiving nationwide attention and being able to show off his “sexy body to millions”.

He is fiercely proud of his Welsh heritage and feels that all Welsh people should speak the language. Glyn aspires to be the first male Page 3 model and is content with his life and body he would like to be reincarnated as himself, declaring: “I am the closest example to perfection”. However, he doesn’t get on well with members of the animal kingdom, claiming: “I hate all animals and they hate me”.

Life is Tough - Getting Movies Should Be Easy

Although the aroma of fresh popped popcorn and a darkened theater with a towering wide screen lures us to new released films, most of us still view far more movies at home than at the theater. With the introduction of online movie rental and movie downloads nearly ten years ago, the selections offered by the local video store are not the only options viewers have for their home entertainment.

Aside from the improved affordability, movie fans enjoy watching movies at home because of convenience. With busy lives that keeps us at work and on the road, time spent relaxing at home is at a premium and any service that allows us to enjoy that time without additional complexity or effort is highly prized. With this in mind, which of these movie services provides the most value for the home viewer?

Traditional video stores can be convenient for some last minute movie picks; or at least convenient if a person lives within a few blocks of the store. If someone suddenly decides at 5:30 pm. that there is time to squeeze in a showing of the most recent Harry Potter flick with the kids, then it is certainly easy to get to and from the store and be ready to view within a half an hour. This assumes of course that the store will have a copy of the DVD available in house at the time it is being sought.

If Harry isn’t at the local video store, then browsing through the remaining films and examining the DVD cases may provide a hint as to what the family might enjoy. After the movie, the viewer will then have at least a couple of days to shuttle back to the store and return the movie before incurring any late fees.

Movie downloads are one of the newer options. Certainly, downloading a movie can allow viewers to decide at the last minute to view Harry Potter, or some other movie, as well. Just a quick 5 minute visit to the download site on line to select and initiate the download allows viewers to remain at home throughout the process. Most films require approximately an hour to download depending upon connection speed. The good news however is that many movie downloads are capable of allowing viewers to begin watching the movie only a matter of minutes into the download process.

There is no worry about returning rented movies that are downloaded or any late fees. Upon download, viewers have a specified period of time in which to watch the movie before it expires. Movielink for example allows movies to be stored for up to 30 days. Perhaps the one drawback for many movie downloads is that they often must be viewed on a PC rather than a television unless viewers have a connection between their PC and TV. The future however, may provide greater flexibility as legal movie download services may be better positioned to allow burning movies to DVD as some of the digital rights management issues are being addressed with movie studios.

Online movie rental services can certainly ease the process of selecting and obtaining movies. Users can go online and select from over 75,000 titles, nearly five times the number of titles offered in a local video store. Here users can create a list of movies in advance that will automatically arrive at their door. Movies requested generally arrive within 1 to 2 business days after they are requested. Users merely stick the DVDs in an envelope for the mailman to pick up when they are ready to return them; and only when they are ready to return them. There are no due dates and no late fees either. The most evident drawback to this system is for those viewers who don’t decide they have the time to view a movie until earlier that same day. Mail delivery does not allow such last minute decisions.

Online movie rental services are evolving however to better accommodate those last minute choices. Netflix, the largest online movie rental service, announced in early 2007 their service can now provide a “Watch Now” feature which allows customers to stream movies directly to their PC rather than waiting for the DVD in the mail. Although not all movie titles are available for streaming at this time, it does provide a potential solution for the occasional last minute movie craving.

One of the final conveniences of online movie rental is that the sheer number of movies offered makes it more likely that a movie of choice will be available. In situations where viewers aren’t sure what they want to see, the Netflix service is even able to provide recommendations based on the comments and ratings of other viewers and the actual viewing pattern of the user. The accuracy of the Netflix recommendations has been applauded within the industry and certainly offers a better option than merely reviewing the information provided by production studios on the sleeves of a DVD.

Each movie service offers different convenience advantages for home movie viewers. Determining whether movie downloads, online movie rental, or use of the local video store is best, may be dependent upon the preferred viewing patterns of a user and their access to a computer or the proximity of a local video store.

Painting Boards

If you are interested in exploring a new form of art, you should consider painting boards. Painting boards give you a much different style of art than canvas and other traditional painting surfaces. And they are very easy to display as well. Use painting boards to let your creative side run wild and in the end you’ll have a great piece of art for your home.

One great painting board option is plywood. Plywood is great because it is texturally rich, meaning you can create something very unique. It is also very affordable and it can be purchased in any size. Use smaller pieces for wall hangings or paint a large board and lean it against a bare wall in your home. Your local home improvement store can cut it to your preferred size. You can use a variety of paints on plywood, including spray paint. Many professional artists love to do graffiti-style art on plywood. You can try it too and spruce up any room in your home with an exciting piece of art.

Another painting board option is masonite boards. Masonite boards are made by compressing wood fibers and wax together to create a very durable and solid wooden board. These are fun to paint and they can be purchased in any shape or size. They are available in a wide range of textures as well. They are also sturdy enough to be used as display stands or mixing boards. You can do a lot with just a couple of masonite painting boards.

In addition to traditional painting boards, you might want to consider using natural items in your art. You can easily gather twigs, rocks and wood from outdoor areas and use them to create art that is unique and nature-based. Consider using natural paints such as ones created with vegetables or dirt to really bring this concept full circle.

The Advent of Electronic Dictionaries in ESL/EFL Learning

Have you ever taught a class of ESL/EFL students who worship their dictionaries? Or had one of those days when the beeping sound of an electronic dictionary steals classroom attention for that one crucial moment during the lesson? To make matters worse, some of these dictionaries have ring tones and other unnecessary sound effects that amplify the distractions.

From the Students’ perspective

In countries like China and Japan where electronic dictionaries are increasingly popular among EFL students, a teacher soon notices that intermediate level English students quickly head for their dictionaries every time they come across new vocabulary. This is understandable because at the intermediate levels of ESL/EFL learning especially, students are always concerned about vocabulary development.

With the advent of highly portable electronic dictionaries the inconvenience of carrying cumbersome paperback dictionaries is almost non-existent; therefore teachers are seeing more electronic dictionaries in the classroom. These days it is not uncommon to have mobile phones with electronic dictionaries installed inside. Most of these dictionaries are equally equipped with speakers and earpieces. While this new technology is brilliant, it can also be very detrimental to students’ learning especially during lessons.

Furthermore, most ESL/EFL students carry dictionaries that simply translate words from English to their native language and vice-versa. They often think it is the fastest way to learn new vocabulary.

Students do not realize that learning new vocabulary by translating actually slows down the learning process. Of course translation is always an easy way out; but also the grammar and translation methods of learning ESL/EFL are not the fastest means of mastering new language inputs. Hence the tendency to “um…”, “uh…” and forget new words learnt by such means never leaves.

From a Teacher’s Perspective

For a teacher in the classroom, this can be frustrating. Most often, trying to get the students off their dictionaries frustrates the teacher even further, because they soon go back to the dictionary the next time they hear a new word. This might dampen a teacher’s confidence as it might suggest that students are attaching more importance to their dictionaries than to the teacher. It can also mean that students don’t have confidence in their teacher’s ability to explain new vocabulary. From another perspective this might be a pointer to the fact that the teacher needs to teach the students more vocabulary acquisition skills.

Generally speaking, dictionaries should be the last point of reference for new words and expressions. We should always remember that 70-80% of all language can be communicated non-verbally. Figuring out meaning in a more contextual set up is more effective in learning and teaching of new language. Looking up the meaning of a new word should be a very brief and less frequent activity. Teachers should try to get students to explain new vocabulary in their own words after having explained the new word to them.
Teaching students other non-dictionary vocabulary learning methods would greatly help. So what are some non-dictionary ways of learning new vocabulary? To begin answering that question we need to look at advantages and disadvantages of dictionaries in ESL/EFL learning.

The Importance of Dictionaries in ESL/EFL Learning

Dictionaries are a very important language learning tool. They are as useful as they can be counter-productive. To make dictionaries useful, students must understand the role of dictionaries in English vocabulary building. So I guess you are now asking the question, “When and how do we use dictionaries for vocabulary building?”

The following points listed below are some of the general reasons why we should use dictionaries:

• In some cases of ESL/EFL teaching, words could be specific to a certain profession. Sometimes looking up professional jargons is unavoidable.
• There are situations where the vocabulary of a lesson can be new to students, even in their own native language.
• Sometimes we are unsure of the spelling of some words. Of course dictionaries are very useful at such times.
• Idiomatic expressions and phrasal verbs can sometimes be too difficult to guess, thereby necessitating the use of dictionaries.
• Some classroom activities and the teaching of certain skills are planned around a dictionary.

• A dictionary can be a student’s study companion at home or away when the teacher is not around. Even then, the issue of when to use it is also very important.

There are many ways of understanding the meanings of new words and expressions without using the dictionary. Despite the importance of dictionaries in ESL/EFL learning, they should be used as the last resort especially in the classrooms. So what is the problem with using a dictionary often?

What’s the problem with dictionaries?

• Dictionaries stop students thinking in context:

Most often students want to isolate a new word and look it up, while forgetting to realize that words do not exist in isolation. Take a look at this sentence for example:

“Without the invention of microscopes, we would not have been able to carry out studies on tiny organisms.”

The word Microscope might be the new word here, but the words tiny organisms easily give a clue to the meaning of microscope and vice-versa. The tendency is for students to forget that the word microscope is easily understood within the context of that sentence. Whereas, a little bit of thinking in context would have done the trick.

• Dictionaries can be a great distraction:

This is especially true of electronic dictionaries and the classroom environment. Most students can’t resist the temptation of looking up a new word every time they come across one. The tendency is to want to stop to look it up, even when the teacher is trying to explain. The end result is always having a student asking the teacher a question on something he/she was explaining a minute ago, or simply deviating from the focus of a lesson - in some occasions the word they were looking up only turns out to be an unimportant word to the subject.

To make matters worse, electronic dictionaries with their beeping sounds and slightly distorted audio recordings can further increase a teacher’s frustration during a lesson. Suddenly an electronic voice is reading out a word from the corner of the classroom and before you know it, a brainwave of distraction occurs in the student’s minds causing them to miss out on what the teacher was explaining. Some teachers might even loose track of what they were saying especially when they hear these audio devices reading out English words in second-hand electronic voices. There is also grave concern here as to what type of electronic dictionaries are actually good for listening and pronunciation. When students prefer to listen carefully to an electronic dictionary, over the teacher, then serious questions arise.

• “Easy come, easy go”:

Every time a new word or expression is learnt without much thinking effort, there is always a propensity to forget soon after. A majority of English learners who use their dictionary all the time always find themselves learning the meaning of a new English word but finding it difficult to remember it the next time they come across it.
Hence the saying: “Easy Come, Easy Go”, becomes more evident here. On the other hand, when words are learnt with a bit more thinking effort, they are actually embossed in the student’s memory.

Non-dictionary ways of learning new vocabulary

• Vocabulary building using prefixes and suffixes (affixes)

A lot of English words we use today come from other languages. There is a lot of material about the etymology of English words, on the internet. There are lots of Latin and Greek influences on most European languages like English, French and Spanish.
You would be surprised at how this basic awareness of the origin of the English language can be of great help to your students. Many English prefixes and suffixes are derived from Latin and Greek. A basic knowledge of commonly used affixes will help students learn English vocabulary much faster without the need to always look up words.

So what are prefixes and suffixes?

A prefix is a letter or group of letters added to the beginning of a word to make a new word: In the word ‘”UNHAPPY”, ‘UN-’ is a prefix added to HAPPY. UN- is a Latin word for NOT.
A suffix on the other hand is a letter or group of letters added to the end of a word to make another word. The suffix NESS added to the end of the word TOGETHER creates another word TOGETHERNESS.

Prefixes and suffixes are generally known as affixes. Affixes create new words, usually by modifying or changing the meaning of a root word. If we take a root word like HAPPY, we can see how affixes can change the meaning as in this example: prefix = UN, root word = HAPPY and suffix = NESS.

The end result is UNHAPPINESS.

Sometimes raising awareness to this word formation aspect of English can be the light that dispels the darkness of dictionary worship.

Or, drawing similar examples from the student’s native language further raises this awareness of word formation in languages as a whole. In Chinese for example, the prefix BU is added to many root words to create an often negative version of a root word. For example HAO in Chinese means GOOD. The opposite is simply formed by adding the prefix BU at the beginning of HAO: prefix=BU root word HAO and result is BUHAO which means BAD. Tons of word opposites are formed in Mandarin Chinese by simply adding this prefix to root words.
If a teacher can make similar references from a student’s native language background, it provides a springboard for the understanding of word formation in English as well. Most often you would realize that the student had not even thought of this in terms of his or her own language.

Since English is a language that has thousands of words from other languages, a brief etymology of commonly used prefixes and suffixes would do much good.

For example the OCT prefix comes from the Latin OCTO which means EIGHT. If you look at most English words beginning with OCT, the meaning is never too far from eight. So ask yourself for example: What is an octopus, octogenarian, octagon, octave, and octet?

In a similar line, TELE- has its roots in Greek, which means far or distant. So what do words like telecommunication, television, telephone and telex have in common?

• Trying to understand words in context through reading

Another way to improve vocabulary is to read more. When students read, they should put their dictionaries far away and try to understand the word from within the context of that text they are reading. To start understanding the text, an understanding of the subject of the text is a giant step. When students come across a new word or expression, they should not just look it up, but first try to figure out what that might mean within that context.
If they cannot understand the meaning after reading the sentence and paragraph of the new vocabulary, they should read the text to the end. Somewhere down the text, the meaning is usually clarified by other words. The dictionary should be the last point of reference when all else fails. Reading a lot is of course one of the best ways to increase vocabulary. Reading helps to define words in context and therefore provides a clear understanding of how to use the new vocabulary; whereas, the dictionary might not provide the context for understanding the new vocabulary.

Teachers should try reading activities in class. One great reading activity for your intermediate to advanced learners would be to bring four news articles on a similar topic to class- these articles should come from different sources. Brainstorm the topic of the articles. For example if your four articles were about earthquakes, ask your students to tell you what happens during and after an earthquake. As they discuss, write down key words on the board. Later, give them the four articles and ask them to do a content analysis of the key words. They should work in teams and count how many times a particular word or its affix modification occurs in one article. This skill teaches students to always associate words with a particular reading context. Take this further by asking students to summarize the articles in writing, using the key words.

• Word Association Exercises:

As earlier mentioned, words do not exist in isolation. They usually fall under a heading and have a specific role to play. Putting together words in the same group creates a systematic and often easy way of remembering vocabulary.

For example, Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Sikhism, Hinduism = Religion. One way of doing word association is to brainstorm a topic. Usually the students would most often have heard something about the topic. If your lesson is about earthquakes for example, ask your students to give you as many words associated with earthquakes as possible. Further group the words into verbs, adjectives and nouns. This systematic approach to vocabulary learning helps arrange words in a systematic and easy-to-access order in the brain. If defragmentation of your computer’s hard drive and memory chip is the computer way of optimizing speed, then word association is the brain’s method of optimizing memory of words.

• Conclusion:

In an age where modern technology is invading every aspect of our lives, new rules have to be made to accommodate these changes. The advent of electronic dictionaries is one of such change that is taking place in our ESL/EFL learning. As ESL/EFL professionals, we are called upon to redefine the rules of dictionaries in ESL/EFL learning so as to make them constructive rather than destructive language learning tools.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s Girlfriend Gemma Atkinson Accused Of Cheating On The Manchester United Superstar

Cristiano Ronaldo’s sexy girlfriend Gemma Atkinson has been accused of being unfaithful to the Manchester United midfielder after being caught flirting with another man live on TV, much to the delight of women all around the world, desperate to fantasize about a hopefully-single Portugese star.

Former Hollyoaks actress Gemma Atkinson was appearing on the reality TV show Soapstar Superstar when she was accused of flirting with Home And Away actor Mark Furze. Cristiano Ronaldo’s girlfriend Gemma Atkinson was seen to be touching and overly enjoying the company of the sexy actor Mark Furze. Mark is seen to be a bit of a hunk by adoring Australian fans, and he made his name as being an actor in the popular Australian TV series Home And Away which is still shown on UK television.

These relationship claims have been angrily denied by Ronaldo’s girlfriend Gemma, who claims some clever editing made it appear that she was flirting with the Australian actor. She claims that it was just a stunt to boost the shows ratings, and that she only has romantic feelings for Cristiano. It wouldn’t be the first time that Atkinson has been involved with a celebrity after apparently dating another footballer, Charlton Athletic star Darren Bent.

Ronaldo’s girlfriend reportedly told a friend that Ronaldo is gorgeous in every way and that things are going really well together. Cristiano Ronaldo apparently agreed that things between the couple are going really well, and that he has been constantly texting her during the TV show recordings and
that he has been voting for Gemma constantly during the show. According to a friend he would love to go to the studio and show his support for Gemma Atkinson personally, but was worried that it could cause a stir due to the apparent fling between Gemma and Mark.

Proper Pocket-Pair Strategy in NL Holdem Tournaments

Even the formidable AA, when played incorrectly, may lead you down a path of ruin. Here, we will attempt to explain which PP’s to play, when to play them, how much to bet with them, and when to ‘get out of Dodge.’

In the early stage of a tournament (levels 1-3 generally), your primary objective should be to increase your stack of chips by perhaps 50% per level. Avoidance of close decisions involving large pots should be paramount. Thus, small to medium PP’s should be played cautiously. Certainly try to limp into as many hands as possible with these cards when the blinds are low in the hopes of hitting your set. Be prepared, however, to exit quickly if you don’t hit, or if an apparent draw presents itself on the flop/turn. Survival is the key here. When you do make your set on a safe board, simply try to extract as many chips from your opponents as possible. Multi-way pots, and again draw possibilities may be troublesome. Always be mindful that holding bottom or mid set to the board could send you packing if the pot becomes large.

With the higher PP’s (JJ-AA) you want to bring them in for a raise of 3-5 times the big blind if first into the pot. If a raiser enters before you, a re-raise may be in order holding KK or AA in order to scare off the chasers. With the field hopefully narrowed, you can punish the remaining players if a favorable flop comes. Knowledge of your opponent’s styles of play is also quite important. Many times in the early stage you will be facing the maniacs and newbies who will call a raise while holding any 2 live cards. Pay attention, and adjust your betting tactics against these players as needed.

The middle stage of a tournament presents more difficult decision-making, based on your chip count. Assuming you are a small stack to the field, you must move up quickly in the standings. We suggest moving in if first to enter the pot with virtually any PP. If others have limped in ahead of you, likewise move all-in if your stack size could still damage those player’s stacks. Keep in mind, however, that the very large and other low stacks will be likely to call you.

A mid-sized stack being dealt PP’s becomes more problematic. Of first concern should be those players sitting to your immediate left. Are they large, or small stacks? Are they aggressive players? Do they defend their blinds readily? Try to pick on the mid/large stacks as they will be more apt to protect their chips now. In early position, we suggest entering an un-raised pot for a standard raise with only JJ-AA. Middle position should include those hands as well as 88-1010. Sitting in late position, you may open for a raise with even 22, depending on the aggressiveness of those to your left.

Many times you will simply win the pot right away without even seeing the flop, which is fine. If you do get callers though, your instincts and knowledge of the other players will be needed to guide you the rest of the way. In order to make the final table and win, you need to accumulate a fair number of chips in this stage. Understand that these hands can win you vast amounts of chips here, or they can be your worst friend if played recklessly.

The late stage of the tournament (in or near the money), is where the action becomes fast and furious. Chips are being shoved all-in seemingly every hand as players jockey for position. The low stacks will (and should) be going all-in with any PP, regardless of position or the actions of the other players. They simply don’t have the luxury of waiting as the increasingly high blinds will soon eat them up.

With a middle stack, raise with your mid/high PP’s in hopes of becoming a large stack. Again, try to extract chips from the middle and large stacks as they don’t want to become a lower-sized stack at this point. Also, those small and very large stacks will be even more likely to call you now with any 2 decent cards. When you become the large stack, you can inflict considerable damage on the field when you are lucky enough to pick up a mid/high PP. Make a standard raise of 3-5 times the big blind so as not to tip your strength. Most of the time, you will win the hand pre-flop as the others know that they can go broke by playing with you. When you do get called though, you will usually increase your stack by a sustantial amount, ensuring an even better chance at winning the tournament!

Considering the frequency with which you’ll be dealt Pocket Pairs, prudent strategy and play of these cards can make the difference in a high final-table finish, or an early exit!
