Second Language Competence Beneficial but often Misunderstood

Second language learning has associated with it many types of benefits. Among them include: social, economic, intellectual and linguistic. Children who engage in second language learning typically outperform their peers in the area of vocabulary development as well as intellectual development. As important as learning a second language is, learners can be viewed as experiencing difficulties with language development when in reality they are displaying linguistic differences.

There is often a period of time when a second language learner is viewed to not speak much, this is due to their processing information in the new language and has been termed as the silent period. Additionally, speaking with an “accent” is a normal part of second language learning because the person is using the sounding system of the first language while speaking the new one. Often, help is required so that the person can enjoy positive communication interactions with others in the second language.

Children who come from homes where English is not the primary language also are at risk within the educational system of being labeled as special and deficient when in reality they have not acquired enough English to be able to succeed in school. Specialized support is often needed for children like these and is not always provided by school districts. The topic of second language acquisition is one that needs to be better understood and supported in our social, educational and business communities.

Clearly, this help is available to those who seek it out. When doing so, please make sure the professional you choose has a background in second language learning and has access to research and experience in best practices relevant to providing language support to English language learners. This can make the difference between a child receiving the help they need when they need it or being referred to a restrictive setting like special education. For accent training, it is important to look for a professional with a background in articulation, sound systems, and second language learning which will enable them best to understand your situation and tailor a program that will suit your needs.

Deborah Chitester MS CCC SLP is a bilingual Speech Language Pathologist who has extensive expertise with second language learners and provides accent training services as well. Her practice is Second Language Literacy and Learning Connection, LLC. She is working on a book and a tutorial to be used by teachers in schools so as to minimize the amount of second language children being referred to special education due to the presence of second language differences. She also provides supports and education to parents in order that they learn valid information concerning how to raise bilingual children. Please see our website slllc.org slllc.org

In Praise of Paris Hilton - the Next Oprah?

Oh my God she is everywhere… On every TV channel, in every magazine, on the Internet, in bookstores, in shopping malls, I even believe I saw her face the other day on the side of a bus, if I’m not wrong…

Paris Hilton…

A phenomenon, a case of marketing magic that should be thought and discussed in all business and marketing schools across the land.

What an interesting thing when 1) you know you’ve seen the face of a blonde woman on the side of a public bus while driving at 60 miles an hour, 2) you’re not sure whose face that might be, but 3) you still have a feeling that it might have been none other than Paris Hilton!

That’s marketing, friends. That’s positioning and branding par excellence.

You do not have to be young or old, cool or clueless, rich or poor to appreciate the new American Icon that Paris Hilton turned herself into by sheer determination and that carefully maintained shy-blonde-next-door persona.

She is just shopping, doing nothing else… and we are watching her (some of us all day long, actually).

She is arguing with her sister… and we are reading all the details the next day.

She is breaking up with her boyfriend… well, I’m sure thousands are feeling heartbroken as well.

We are living vicariously through Paris while most of us keep thinking she is yet another rich and spoiled celebrity, and this one born with a silver spoon in her mouth, and thus nothing special to notice or acknowledge, perhaps yet another flavor-of-the-day pop article that will blow away.

But I have a feeling Paris Hilton might turn out to be more than that.

The girl that once made the waves for starring in the kind of low-budget flicks that you wouldn’t show to your children is now slowly insinuating her way into our homes and streets and into what we read and watch and hear.

This is nothing short of a “cultural invasion” on a scale matched and superseded perhaps only by the other True American Popular Culture Icon of our time – the one and only Oprah!

On that note I’m still wondering if Paris and her agent and managers will have the sagacity to reposition her career to turn her into the “friend of the masses” figure that Oprah is.

Somehow we feel that Oprah is “one of us” even if she makes a hundred million dollars a year. That’s her great accomplishment and legacy that cannot be taken away.

So far Paris Hilton is still “the other.”

There is still this distance between us and this slightly-aloof and vulnerable if good-hearted and happy blonde girl that seems to be more absorbed with her own trials and tribulations than our own.

The minute she discovers that real personal and commercial growth lies beyond staying as the center of her own universe and requires opening up and shooting like a comet into the orbits of other but more mundane lives, Paris Hilton might become the next Oprah, in a different sense.

I’m not putting that possibility beyond the usually underestimated smarts of Paris Hilton. She is a true professional a lot sharper than most people give her credit for. That’s why I think she’ll continue to be in our lives, in our living rooms, in our bookstores and our TV sets and podcasts for a long long time to come.

Who knows, she might one day even end up healing us with her own personal example as well, not only for what she does but simply for being who she is, like Oprah does (and is) on a daily basis. And that’s a promise worth waiting for.

5 Songwriting Tips

1.Sharpen your Songwriting skills every day. Like an athlete who strives to practice so as to reach the peak of his/her performance, a songwriter or a composer should also practice regularly…OK. you are talented and everything, but your talent means nothing if your brain doesn’t get used to using this talent. Make a 30 min. music writing time per day and use it to experiment with chords, write themes or maybe rearrange something. But always keep in mind that you are just practicing, so there probably isn’t a “hit” coming out of these 30 min…Hits come like a flash so be always prepared!

2.Listen to music every day. The very famous Suzuki violin teaching method requires that the student listens to a tape containing the pieces he/she learns everyday to “develop musical ability”(Schinichi Suzuki). Guess what? It works. As you listen more you will unconsciously adapt more to music in general and, on the conscious level, discover tricks and techniques in music writing that you didn’t know about. Nobody can create music De Novo, it has got to have some roots!!

3.Don’t limit yourself to one style. My music education was classic, but I adore Rock and Metal (my favorite bands are Scorpions and Pink Floyd) as much as I adore Bach and Dvorák and ,since I’m Egyptian, I also like my share of oriental music..!! Such a style mix can create the most wonderful ideas, and this is how most songwriters come up with new styles (ex: Pink Floyd’s Psychedelic Rock). Always explore and experiment with new styles, if you take a look at the history of any band, you find out that’s what songwriting is all about.

4.Learn the rules of the game. You probably think that since you can come up with a nice theme, that your are on the right track …WRONG ;). It is true that songwriting has no specific rules, but here you are looking for “Five Songwriting Tips”, eh?!!. A song is music words…As much as you can, learn music theory and the basics of lyrics/poetry writing. Learning never stops and it’s a fact that as you learn more about the rules of the game, you become more skillful bending those rules..!!And never forget that writing catchy melodies and smart rhyming lyrics needs lots of practice.

5.Don’t be shy. Make everybody know about your songwriting skills. Show it to friends and family first, then to songwriting communities and finally, seek professional critiques. As you get your work more fine tuned, you will become more confident and, consequently, more open to new ideas and suggestions. Remember, it’s the people whom you are writing for, their thoughts do matter.

Music Aids in Studying, Concentration, Retention and Retrieval of Information

Research has shown that music aids in absorption, retention and retrieval of information.

Try playing classical music as background music while your child when he is studying or doing home work. It helps him to concentrate, focus and memorize facts easier.

At home, we play smoothing music in the background when our daughter (41/2 year old at point of writing) when she is doing mental work like maths and puzzles. She perform a lot better as compared to the time when no music is played.

Also, I played music for our 8-month-old son when he cried or get irritated for no reason. The moment when the music is played, he calmed down immediately and even tapped his hands and feet. Music really has a powerful effect on human brain.

Below is a list of music that I highly recommend to parents:

In Am The Watcher

I am the Watcher

At times
in the thick of events
still do I Watch

I am an observer
though at times
when it is deemed appropriate
by HE WHO sent me
I act

That which I see is recorded
in the record of Time
never to be expunged
There is nothing that is not written
nothing is forgotten
For that which you do

you are held accountable
also for that which you do not

I AM THE WATCHER

Read therefore
and learn what it means to be watched

read and learn
that you may be
as it was preordained

Learn of the following

and be well

Things of the heart

In the midst of all this turmoil
that we call life
there has always been one constant value
that never varies
It can neither be touched or seen
all can partake
but none can control it
It is freely given

but far to expensive to buy
it cannot be bartered or traded for
if you seek it out it is not to be found
stop your search and there it is
What could this thing be
is it for real can I have it
will it last
The answer is

LOVE

and only if
you are one of the

extremely fortunate.

I will relate that which I see,
no matter what the source be

You might not like what I say
but this you must know

All that is said will be true
and everything applies to you

I AM HE WHO WATCHES

We will speak again.

Learning Spanish For Kids: Your Kid Will Thank You In The Future

Today, learning Spanish is something that anyone can do even those that are as young as toddlers. If your child has a good instructor, he or she can learn to speak a second language as he or she is learning to speak the first one. The good news is that these children can then take what they learn and apply the same methods to learning all sorts of things. Researchers have found that children learn easier and in a more beneficial way when they are young and that there is no limit to what they can learn at an early age.

If you are considering the benefits that Spanish can offer to your youngster, then consider the perfect program for them to select. For those that are younger, even into elementary school, Spanish programs should offer several key benefits to be successful.

• All of the senses should be used in teaching Spanish to young children. They can not read as of yet, or may be in the process of learning, so engaging all of their senses is a must. To do this, make sure to use various exercises from flashcards to touching to hearing and to seeing the words. These things will engrave the language more successfully into the child’s memory.

• Use computer learning tools. There are many benefits here especially those tutorials and programs that are so well designed for the child that they make it fun to learn. These interactive exercises keep the child’s attention and allow them to participate more fully then just doing flashcards.

• Speak Spanish. If your child is to learn Spanish or any other language, you need to speak it yourself and use it throughout the course of the day. If you have not learned to speak the language yourself, then do so with your child. Incorporate the language. Use both languages to instruct your child. This repetition allows for them to see how the words are used.

Teaching young children a second language such as Spanish allows them to do better with much of their studies. They are more capable of communicating better at a young age, they have better cognitive development and they have better academic performance later through their educational degree. With so many tools and resources available to you to help you to teach your child, there is no reason why you shouldn’t do it.

Want To Know How To Play A Piano? First Decide What Kind Of Piano You Need

If you’ve decided that it is time for you buy a piano then you should start looking for what kind of piano you want to buy. Do you want something that will be smaller or something that will be something that can make a statement? To start with it might be easier to know what kind of pianos you can buy.

You can start with an upright piano. These will help you save room.

• Spinet: this is a piano that is 36 to 38 inches tall and 58 inches wide. Because of its size most people pick this kind of piano because it can fit into limited space.

• Console: slightly larger then the Spinet. You’ll be able to find this type in different styles and colors.

• Studio: This is the kind of piano that you see in music school. Because of it’s larger size it will be durable and have a very good sound quality.

• Upright: this is the tallest amount the vertical pianos. This might be the kind of piano you’re grandparents might have used.

The next type of pianos is horizontal pianos.

• Petite Grand: this is the smallest of the horizontal pianos. It is small, but very powerful.

• Baby Grand: this is a very popular piano to buy. This piano can be from four feet to five feet.

• Medium Grand: larger then the baby grand.

• Parlor Grand: this type of piano range in size from five feet to six feet. You’ll have to make sure you have room for a piano this size.

• Semi-concert or Ballroom: the next size up from a Parlor Grand. This one is around 7 feet long.

All the pianos might be the right one for you to start playing. But you should make sure that you find the right piano for you. Besides looking at the type of pianos you should make sure that they have the right price. Researching what kind price range might help in deciding also.

It might be worth it to spend a little extra money to get a better piano. You can also make sure that you have the enough room to show off you’re new piano. Most of all pick a piano that you know you’ll play and have fun playing it.

Live for Today

“If we can just suffer through all the inequities of this life on earth, we will be rewarded in heaven, but only if we are good and don’t cause problems here.”

(Hmm, sounds like something right out of a predatory employer’s handbook!)

“I only go around once, so I am going to enjoy every minute of it!”

(Okay, but what if every minute isn’t quite as enjoyable as you’d like? What then? Do you rob a bank so you can enjoy yourself more? But how enjoyable is being on the run the rest of your life, or sitting in an 8 by 5 cell? Is it enjoyable to find yourself caught in a mindset where only money can make you happy? Maybe – if you’re Donald Trump!)

“I’m going to live for today and not worry about the future, I’ll handle whatever comes along.”

(This is an interesting attitude, and very prevalent. Examples are husbands reading Sunday newspapers in church parking lots, smoking cigarettes, while wives are inside attending mass and trying to get to heaven.)

More scenarios exist, perhaps as many as there are individuals, and all of them have one thing in common; they are destined to disappoint us. When we saddle ourselves with rigid convictions, we become blind to other possibilities. Wisdom is then sacrificed for belief. Belief puts the brakes on further inquiry, and whether we believe in a religion, a philosophy, or believe that we believe in nothing! We negate further development.

“I’m going to keep my mind clear of concrete opinions and be alert to all possibilities at all times.”

This is more like it, and only the fearless can utter it. Those afraid will, every time, stop at some weak finality and cloak themselves in a perceived security. Whether it is a belief, a movement, another person, or the millions of other trips we can take to shield ourselves from the truth that we don’t exist in the way we think we do, we will seek refuge in it. But the problem is; there is no refuge outside of ourselves. Only within our deepest being is the true refuge to be found.

The fearless understand this. They understand their existence and all its ramifications, because they have the courage to look deeply into it. And they are free, free to all possibilities. They have crossed a certain threshold that must be crossed, otherwise, we find ourselves in a constant state of discontent regardless of how hard we try to believe that everything is okay. It’s a sad state of affairs, and it doesn’t have to be that way.

So, how do we become fearless? It’s simple; we arrive at the point where we have nothing left to lose. But we don’t arrive at that point via hopelessness, we arrive at it from complete freedom. This is the only way to free ourselves from everything; to be fundamentally liberated.

And it all begins with the simple effort of meditating once a day

Top 5 Mistakes When Playing Texas Hold’em

There are a number of EXPENSIVE mistakes that you are most likely making in your poker game RIGHT NOW.

I’m going to go over the top 5 mistakes that most people make and explain how you can begin to not only FIX them right away, but you can start to take advantage of the other players who are making these mistakes.

So let’s get started…

MISTAKE #1 — Playing Too Many Hands

Most of the poker players out there are playing way too loose with their starting hands. You really need to concentrate on sticking with the PREMIUM hands, especially when you’re at a large 8, 9 or 10 man table.

You should avoid limping in with bad cards just to see the flop, hoping for something good. It’s not worth it, and all those blinds add up if you’re not careful!

The main reason why most people are playing too many hands, is simply that they want ACTION. It’s human nature to want to get into the action and not wait around for good cards.

However, if you want to win, you need to be more patient.

You know you’re playing good poker if you’re getting BORED. Yes I said BORED :-).

MISTAKE #2 — Not Playing Correctly For Your Position

In Texas Hold’em, position is everything…

Being in the right position at the table gives you a huge advantage over the other players. This means that your opponents must act FIRST. This allows you to make an informed decision of what you want to do, based on how they played.

The LATER your position on the table, the better. This means you want to be the last to act after the flop. The best position is the dealer (aka “the button”).

One of the biggest mistakes that most people make is playing based on the CARDS and not considering their position. For example… How you would play pocket ACES as big blind is completely different than how you should play when you’re on the button.

That goes for ALL hands and ALL positions.

MISTAKE #3 — Letting Your Emotions Get Involved

Controling your emotions is a HUGE part of being a successful Hold’em player. You need to be able to remove yourself from the outcome of the game, and just play smart poker.

Poker can very easily become an emotional game for many reasons. You’re playing with MONEY, your EGO and LUCK. This can create a very emotional outcome.

However you MUST control your emotions, and if possible, leave them completely at the door. Going TILT is one of the fastest ways poker players go BROKE, so just relax… You’re playing for fun, so take it easy and you’re win much more often.

MISTAKE #4 — Not Knowing The Odds Of Winning

If you know the ODDS and can calculate the chance of winning in poker, you will be much more successful.

Of course you can win some games by being able to READ your oppponents, and “guess” what they might have in their hand…

But, it really comes down to knowing the odds if you want to be a consistant winner.

I know that for some of you, the idea of “calculating” and “math” is not a fun subject, but it’s really not as difficult as you might think. There are actually a lot of “shortcuts” and “tricks” you can use to quickly calculate pot odds, hand percentages, outs and other important information.

MISTAKE #5 — Thinking You Know It All

I run into many “know it all” poker players in the various games and tournaments I play in. The funny thing is, they may know it all… But I have all the money at the end :-)…

The fact is, you were not BORN to play poker. It’s a SKILL game and you have to learn how to play if you want to be great at it.

You’ve got to always be asking yourself… “Is this the right move for this situation?”

You need to let your EGO go and realize that you DON’T know it all, and that there are other people who are better than you that you can learn from. I’ve been fortunate to personally learn from some of the greatest players alive, and I’m always looking for more information to improve my game, and you should too.

Understand that Poker is a SKILL game, and the more knowledge you have will put you at an advantage over the others at the table. You can literally “STACK THE DECK” in your favor.

If you want to learn HOW TO WIN, I can show you everything you need to know, and you can INSTANTLY take your poker skills to the next level!

Should I be Learning a Foreign Language?

Tell me, should I be learning a foreign language?

The answer to this question is a resounding yes! In this modern age of European integration, it can come in extremely handy. It makes it possible to travel across the globe and in actual fact makes it a whole lot easier. By learning the local language it can make the entire experience come alive, you can not only interact with the locals but find out things that you might never have known had you not been able to have a chat. Not only this but if you get lost, you could always ask a local for directions!

Learning a new language doesn’t just bring the obvious benefits like making travel easier, it also can have unexpected rewards too. Knowing a second language immediately makes you stand out from the rest and when you are job hunting this can make a world of difference. Looking for a new job as head of the sales team in a large corporation? It would certainly help if you could speak the language of one of their global clients; you would automatically be seen as a good candidate for the job. Looking to change career direction altogether? If you know a foreign language you could become a teacher in your own country or even better, get a job as an English teacher in a foreign one. You could get paid to live in an exotic country, surely everyone’s idea of a dream job?

Which language should I choose?

Well that’s kind of up to you, it depends on what you feel comfortable with. However, not being the type to sit on the fence I’m going to give you a personal recommendation: Learn Spanish.

Why Spanish? Well, having sat through German lessons at school, it’s not the most interesting language to learn. I’m not knocking it, it just wasn’t for me! Lots of people were taught French at school; you’re hardly going to stand out with that are you? So moving onto Spanish, less people know this language than the others I mentioned, but it seems that everyone goes there on holiday, that’s crazy! People like to go to Spain to retire and yet many of them cannot speak a word of the language. Learning Spanish will help you settle down there and make it feel like a real home.

Don’t want to retire just yet? Well as mentioned earlier, Spanish can help you on your travels, but it can also help in the workplace or help you get a completely different job altogether. Not only that but Spanish is actually a really interesting language.

So how can I learn Spanish then?

There are a number of different options and it all comes down to the time and effort available to you.

If you have plenty of time available, then by far the best way is to enrol on a full/part time course. Many people are going back to university or college as a mature student so that they can re-train for a new career. Why not learn Spanish as part of your course? Many courses have foreign language modules in them.

Ok so not everyone has the time to do this, so what’s the next option? Evening classes are another good way to learn Spanish, they won’t be as fast as a university/college course but they enable you to have a structured learning experience once or twice a week in the evenings.

I don’t have enough time for these courses, what can I do?

So what if you simply don’t have enough time to enrol on a course or an evening class? Maybe you work long hours, or have kids to look after; there must be a solution for you somewhere right? Luckily there is and it’s called online learning. All you need to do is set aside a few hours a week, how fast or slow you go is up to you but I would recommend that you set aside as much time as you can afford; no more, no less. Online learning can be tailored to your own needs and because it doesn’t involve scheduled lesson times, you can fit it around your hectic schedule.

Where can I get this online learning?

Really, the clue is in the name! Get yourself on the internet and there are plenty of courses available. To save you some time though, I do have a personal recommendation:

Rocket Spanish

I have used this course previously and I really can’t recommend it highly enough. It is fun, easy to use and you can learn Spanish at your own pace.

Don’t just take my word for it though, go and read the testimonials on the site and make your own mind up.

At the time of writing, they are offering a FREE trial of the software so you can find out if it is for you. If you do decide to buy, it is currently being offered at a highly discounted price.

Not only that, if you do purchase the full product there is a money back guarantee, you can’t lose!
