How to Draw Castle Floor Plans

The Floor Plan for every Medieval Castle was different but there were some rules of thumb that they pretty much all followed. Here are some guidelines to help you draw a castle floor plan that is realistic and attractive.

Whether you are drawing a castle floor plan for a school project, a website, or a board game it can be difficult to find good information on some of the more important points of why and how medieval castles were built.

There are two very important aspects of a castle that you have to consider when drawing out your castle floor plan. The first is the concept of concentric circles and the second is the thought that a castle needed to be self-sufficient for long periods of time.

The Concept of Concentric Circles

This is a very important aspect of castle design. It is the concept of putting lines of defense inside each other. This way an attacking army had to overcome an obstacle and when they did that they still had another obstacle to overcome. This is how a typical castle would be built. Around the castle would be a very large area cleared of all brush and trees. Then there would be a moat, then an outer wall, an inner wall, then finally the keep. All of these obstacles would have to be breached by an attacking army one at a time.

Here is how you draw it:

Draw a large circle on your piece of paper. This is the area around the castle that is cleared of all trees and brush.Draw a rectangle in the middle of your clearing. Make it about three quarters the size of the clearing. This is your outer wall. Around this outer wall draw a band about an inch or two thick in blue. This is the moat. Now draw another rectangle inside your outer wall. This is the inner wall and the castle proper. In this area would be many of the rooms and functions of your mini self-sufficient village. Finally, make the top third of the last rectangle you drew into the Keep. This is the last line of defense for your castle. In this rectangle would go some basic rooms like the main hall, living quarters, dining hall and armory. Most of your other rooms and functions would go in the courtyard between the inner wall and the keep. These rooms would be formed along the walls all the way around the inside of the rectangle.

The Concept of Self Sufficiency

A castle had to have everything it needed for the occupants to survive inside without any help from the outside world for a long period of time. This was because a major tool of any attacking army was the siege. This was when they would surround the castle and not allow anyone or anybody in or out. This would starve the occupants of the castle into surrender.

So inside the castle you should add all of the major components of any medieval town. Put these inside the Keep:

A Main meeting hallA Dining HallAn Armory for storage of weapons and armorA ChapelLiving quarters for Royalty, Knights, soldiers, servants and peasantsA Kitchen large enough to feed the castleAnd inside the Castle proper hugging up against the inner castle wall put these rooms and functions:

Multiple storage rooms for foods, grains and meatsA large garden, the inner courtyard of a castle was often fully used to grow vegetablesLivestock pensStables Bakery and grainery – bread was an important part of the medieval diet. Grain stored well for long periods of time and bread was easily bakedDungeon and prison for captured enemiesCraftsman Shops such as Blacksmith and CarpenterA well for drinking water

If you are making a castle floor plan as part of a game you can get very creative with the way the castle is laid out and you can add many functions and rooms not described here. But if you follow the concepts of Concentric circles and Preparedness against siege you will still have a castle that has a feel of authenticity to it no matter how elaborate or imagined your plans are.

Jon Jost, Independent Film-maker - Flower

Jon Jost, independent film-maker. The early films

2. Flower

Jon Jost’s short film ‘Flower’ (1970) explores the relationship between language and meaning. A direct parallel is drawn between film language and verbal language. The film opens with a quote, in the form of a printed text, from Mallarmé saying that when he reads the word ‘flower’ he experiences a sense of beauty. But there is no flower actually there, only the word, and the associated idea of a flower. Therefore, he concludes, the word ‘flower’ denotes a beautiful idea.

Jost follows this with many shots of flowers, and again the sequence goes on for a long time, giving us ample time to consider what is taking place. We begin by looking for the flower which matches our idea of a flower, and none of them do. Our idea of a flower does not exist in the real world, only specific individual flowers, such as the ones we are seeing on the screen, exist there. But if we cannot see our idea of a flower on the screen, nor, we realise, can we see any real flowers, all we can see are projected patterns of light shade and colour.

The film ends with a quote praising the beauty of ‘hues conceived in the mind’, and deploring the folly of men who think such beauty can be represented by mere ‘grunts and squeaks’, (i.e. language).

Jost is demonstrating that film itself cannot present us with reality, or with meanings, film is a mere language, patterns of light and shade, grunts and squeaks. It is we who attribute meaning to the images, and any reality we might think we are seeing in the film is merely an illusion. Jost continually reminds us of this fact, even in the features, in order that we should see through the illusion to what is being communicated from him to us about our real lives in the real world.

Having established that film is only a language, it follows that everything we see on the screen is determined by the film-maker’s intentions towards us, and towards his subject matter. Jost has defined film (In ‘Susannah’s Film’, 1969) as ‘light, shade, and bias’, and his film ‘13 Fragments and 3 Narratives from Life’ (1968) is a complex and fascinating essay on this subject.

Endearing Our Enemies

Endearing our enemies
Quite a new concept indeed
Not for Jesus
He whom did bleed
For those who crucified Him
Spit in His face
Mocked and ridiculed Him
To their own disgrace
Nevertheless He endured
Their beatings and belittling remarks
Saying, “Father forgive them.
For they know not what they do.”
Perhaps such a love
Is incomprehensible to you.
Not to our gentle Savior Jesus Christ
Who for humanity
Unashamedly gave His life
Preferring others over Himself
Christ laid down His life
Seeking nothing else
Than to honor and uplift mankind
So committed to this cause was He
He loved the foulest who were spiritually blind
He loved the Pharisees
Who were full of themselves religiously
He loved the tax collectors
Who only collected money
He loved the prostitutes
Who sold themselves for survival
He loved the desperate
Uplifting them and giving revival
He loved the adulteress woman
Who sought things that could never satisfy
Though when she was alone did cry
The wife who had five husbands
And was shacked up out of wedlock
Christ even loved His accusers
When they were in a disagreeing deadlock
Christ loved kings, princes, and noble men
Though he truly knew their struggles
And what was within them
He nurtured people despite their agenda
He loved wholeheartedly
Showing Himself bold and tender
Saul, a devout Jew, thought himself
To be obeying and serving God
While killing Christians
Christ visited him, knocking him to the ground
Suddenly even to this religious murderer
The love of God did abound
After which he put his anger down
Took up the gospel of love in a new sound
Endearing enemies
Loving everybody
This is what Christ was about
Overcoming evil with good
Transforming people and nations within
As a leader should
God help us in this hour
To use and apply similar methods
To rectify wrongs
Appeal to hearts
Rid ourselves of accusation
And throwing verbal darts
Help us depart from dehumanizing
Empower us to win our enemies
Give us divine strategies
Holy initiatives with supernatural wisdom
Enable us to take in the earth dominion
Not by weapons of war
On the contrary, help us believe for more
Even internal rehabilitation and transformation
Whereby God can enter in
And make our enemies a new creation
New inside and out
Ending strife and modeling life
This is what we should be about.

Reality Part 1

Solipsistic [sol•ip•sis•tic] - the belief that the only thing somebody can be sure of is that he or she exists, and that true knowledge of anything else is impossible

Reality is whatever we choose it to be… Now some may choose to ignore this idea, but it is a fundamental truth nonetheless.

In truth our only connection to reality is whatever we perceive through our limited senses. That tree is real because I can see it, touch it, and smell it. This hamburger is real because I can pick it up, put it in my mouth, and taste its greasy goodness. Our brain interprets the responses we receive from our senses, and then creates our world.

Every person’s world is different. How can you say that what you perceive to be green, is the same thing I perceive to be green? I was taught in kindergarten that a particular shade of color is associated with a particular word, but does everyone see that color the same?

Our mind is an extremely powerful tool for creating and interpreting the reality around us. It will go to great lengths and will even “artificialize” the world in order to keep our concept of truth intact. Our brain can create false memories, define truths that we were never told, and even fool the senses all in order to keep the ideal of our reality.

In terms of creating false memories, how many dreams have you had, that you swore were true? Over time our brains can actually confuse these dreams with real memories, and you can fool yourself into believing a dream actually happened.

The Blue Aeroplanes - Poetry And Dance In The Mind And The Ears

Back in the days of what was the explosive ‘Woodstock’ music scene of Bristol and the West Country, a vocalist emerged from the new genre, known as indie, in the shape Gerard Langley. Hardly, as you would first think, a name to be reckoned with in the glitzy world of music showbiz, but a fairly stable name even so. Along with his brother, who took up the position of drummer, they soon gathered together a collection of some of the most talented and composed musicians in the city area. In fact, they were, as they called themselves, The Blue Aeroplanes, known to have the biggest ‘musician - participation’ in, probably, modern music history.

Although their commercial contribution to the world of music looks vaguely more successful that a Pop Idol winner, their gritty and uniquely timed anthems had far from been on the same level. Langley, the headman was known, in the fast growing indie scene for his deep, menacing and half spoken vocals and other than supporting a then, little known U.S band called, R.E.M, although the band had collaborated with Michelle Shocked on one track.

It would appear that there seems to be a silent, yet, growing interest in this distant indie band who, tragically, graced only the bottom half of the Top 75 at any given time. It perhaps should be more the question of why didn’t they ever make the grade? Well, that could be answered as simply as bad timing. Due to their haunting renditions of a familiar Smiths sound, they would have been noted as to be almost a decade out of date. I do believe that if they had been around a lot earlier, then their level of success would have vastly improved. That comatose style of backing vocal, at the time of, ‘Jacket Hangs’ was the tones of Rodney Allen, Alex Lee, John Langley and Andy McCreeth, was more along the lines of The Waterboys, which, is certainly no bad thing, but on listening back to Blue Aeroplanes tunes today, we find ourselves puzzled as to why they weren’t better recognised. What we don’t perhaps remember, is how much the talent odds were stacked against them. With a sound that was unique and so in tune with the outside world, it was also the backdrop of every other band at the time. Not to mention the members list grew to around thirty…

It is also arguable that there were far less talented bands around the time of the mid Eighties to the early Nineties, who, simply didn’t deserve to achieve the success that they did. Who really could have forgotten that rhythmic perfect of John Langley’s drum backing and that non melodic, jangle effect on guitars from Lee and Allen? They fused together as a band and never failed to let their fan base down. They might have been predictable in their approach to their own expression of indie music, but at least that meant never having to cringe ferociously at surprising and embarrassing diversions.

Their first notably successful album, ‘Bop Art,’ in April 1984, may have sounded more like a Gene Vincent take on an old Transvision Vamp album, but it was surprisingly fresh enough to create a lasting appeal on certain listeners who, it would seem, became the backbone of the circle of devoted fans today. Although, since their early days, when their influences swayed heavily towards Elvis Costello and The Velvet Underground, they have somehow taken what they had learnt from these artists and actually drawn up, by themselves, a sound that, truly, came from themselves. We wonder how it came to be that they had come and gone from so many record labels. Their career path has certainly trodden a steady route through all the alternative labels of that time. Finally, standing firm behind the legendary label that brought us Icicle Works and Gene Loves Jezebel - Beggars Banquet, they had driven the idea through following bands, that it was the way that stable, tight knitted bands worked to get the maximum coverage.

Albums followed plus a couple of singles that failed to make any lasting notability with the regular record purchaser. ‘Tolerance’ in 1986 and ‘Spitting Out Miracles’ in 1986, after which, they enjoyed little in the way of pleasing positions from a string of EP’s and one or two singles that followed.

They did, however, change their attitude through this far from joyful period in their early career. Shifting from Art Rock and layered pieces to dirty, simple guitar rhythms and slapping drums, their move towards the indie scene seemed sensible and optimistic. Two singles followed through another label, Chrysalis, ‘Jacket Hangs,’ and ‘..And Stones,’ first in February and second in May 1990. Both failed to cut into the Top 70. Albums trailed accordingly in the shape of ‘Swagger,’ (1990), ‘Beatsongs,’ (1991) and ‘Life Model,’ (1994). The middle of these, ‘Beatsongs,’ graced the Top 35, but failed to hang around longer than three weeks. They had, already, toured with R.E.M in 1989 by this time, who, were enjoying critical acclaim with their politically observed, ‘Green,’ the year before.

They had achieved as much as they could in those early times. They appeared in such audience participating venues such as the Town And Country Club in Kentish Town, North London; a venue known for the closeness felt through band and crowd. It was a favourite for indie and up and coming bands. Regulars there had been Hard Rain, Then Jericho, Three And A Half Minutes, not to mention, unknown Scottish smilies, Wet Wet Wet. Some, who got to see the B.A’s always commented on their live performances, noting them as born gig masters. After all, not all bands could boast their own Polish dancer in the shape of Wojtek Dmochowski.

It has undoubtedly crossed the minds of some of you when we say we must still remark on the history of The Blue Aeroplanes when they seemed to have achieved so little. One is for sure, they have remained true to themselves - never faltering in any shape or form, always pleasing to the eye and enjoyable to listen to. They take you back in time to a place in music history where bands were made up of young people who actually played instruments. Any band of that time, composed, rehearsed and performed over and over again to get it right. They worked hard, sweated and were devoted to their craft. Unlike today when a band is only made up of people who can just about sing and who couldn’t compose a tune and lyric if their lives depended on it. This, I think it why, we should still celebrate bands like The Blue Aeroplanes for their determination and continuous contribution to British music. Whether it was experimental with different musicians and arrangements of sounds laced together with synths and percussions or taking the dive into all that was the bitter, edginess of the birth of indie, they have gathered up the growing trends into their arms and come with their own style of sound. They came back with gusto in 2000 with the album, ‘Cavaliers/Roundheads,’ and now, just this year, 2006, we see the release of a long awaited, two CD set of a remaster of the 1990 album, ‘Swagger,’ probably their most rewarding and well received album of the Nineties. This re working contains 14 bonus tracks and goes, unmistakeably as, ‘Swagger Deluxe.’ The B.A’s are back, still standing strong and still eagerly eclipsing new sounds with traditional B.A rhythms and techniques.

We feel as if we know them know, but exactly where, when, how and why the band formed originally and who gelled with who is not entirely known. Their initial birth seems to be a mystery, and perhaps only known by Bristol residents and those who knew them, so it is with this, that they remain intriguing and their records, desirable. These ordinary student, type guys, who are now in their forties, still capture a moment in time when music was still exciting and new; when records were still bought in Woolies on vinyl and singles were only 45’s for 45 pence. As far as The Blue Aeroplanes themselves go, all we know is that in Bristol and also in certain places of the Globe, this band still take a secret pride of place in the musical Hall of Fame.

Casino Games History or How People Have Learnt to Count Cards; part 1

The dream of capoting a casino is as old as the notion “casino” itself. Every gambler wants to win. Every other invents his own “system”. Every hundredth attempts to carefully analyze the game. And only the few of millions succeed.

The most famous achievement in the sphere of “system” game against the casino was the so called “card counting” at blackjack – mathematically based methods of game allowing to get some advantage over the casino. The casinos, surely, knows about the existence of “counters” and are trying to oppose them – from changing the rules to banning the game. Sometimes even exceeding the limits of reason and legality. In fact, all the history of the blackjack is the struggle between the gamblers and the casino which is more clever.

More than half a century passed since the first attempts of beating the casinos in blackjack, based not on the marked cards and intuition. There has been a peck of salt eaten since then, but the struggle is still going on….

Mammoth.

Probably the first person in history who applied mathematic analysis to the game blackjack was Jess Marcum (originally Marcovitch) was born on 30th December 1919.

It happened at the turn of 1949 and 1950, when Jess, being an excellent mathematician and physicist-theorist got to Las Vegas. Then his mathematic flair prompted him that most possibly not everything depends on intuition in blackjack.

Marcum started analyzing blackjack. First, the uniqueness of his attempt is that he performed absolutely all calculations with his pen on the paper, on principle without using any technologies whatever weak they might be at that time. Second he had found the solution!

Jess manually developed what is now called basic strategy and counting systems ten years before someone else has done that. He counted that theoretically he had an advantage over the casino of about 3% –under the conditions of that time it was quite real. Moreover, Markum had been playing blackjack in all known to him casinos- both in the USA and abroad. His name appeared on the pages of the newspapers as an example of “lucky man” who managed to hit the jackpot.

Jess Markum also went down to history as probably the first man thrown out from the casino because of cards. Though at that time casinos did not understand that such system existed. Jess lived in Las Vegas for about a year. The casino owners exchanged the information when they gathered at the general meeting. And they were terrified. After that Markum was not admitted at all Vegas casinos. He went to Reno. The same story- in half a year after unbelievable “luck” the casino owners started making inquiries about the incredible gambler. Then other states and cities. Then Cuba, the Bahamas. Nobody knows how much money he has won during that time. One thing is known for sure- in fact, Jess Markum started the war between the gamblers and casinos in blackjack, that is still going on and getting more and more strained.

He did not share his calculations with anyone, and completely gave up playing against casino after a wide public publication of blackjack methods by other authors.

Jess Markum died in 1992, at the age of 72.

The four of Neanderthals.

The next effort of great influence on the blackjack math was made in 1956 by the group of four mathematicians- Roger Baldwin, Wilbert E. Cantey, Herbert Maisel and James McDermott.

These people had never played in casino before, having spent a great number of m/hr, they created basic strategy of playing blackjack according to the most popular at that time rules and published it together with the calculation methods in the specialized math journal for statisticians – Journal of the American Statistical Association entitled “The Optimum Strategy In Blackjack”.

They made several slight mistakes in calculations which is nothing serious taking into account their enormous contribution. A year later they issued a small book Playing Blackjack to Win, which is now a bibliography rarity.

In fact their book and the article did not spark much furor, and remained almost without attention regardless of their innovative approach. However, the word almost turned out to be the key for all the gambling industry, as someone did paid close attention to the research of the excellent four.

Stand Up Comedian or Bubble Blower?

I got an email from a friend of mine here not so long ago. He is late 20s - a few years younger than me - and in this email, he told me how he had taught himself to swim.

He explained in great detail the embarrassment of holding on to the edge of the pool blowing bubbles, practising the breathing technique before graduating to a kick board and doing laps up and down the pool.

With continued effort, he managed to teach himself to complete a lap of freestyle and now here he is - 5 months later - swimming 1 mile each day. He isn’t going to be trialling for the Olympic team anytime soon, but he has become proficient at it after a relatively short while.

So too, does it go with learning stand up comedy. It might feel like blowing bubbles at times and can you either sink or swim up on stage, but it is a skill you can learn and like any other, you can get so good at it, it can become a way to make money.

The bubble blowing of stand up comedy.

I think one of the most important initial steps should be to watch comedians who are already established. Live performances are best, or DVDs of live performances, where you can see the performer in their element doing what they do best.

When you are ready to practise breathing techniques, watch each comedian and make a note of how they construct their jokes. Take note of their delivery, their timing. Is the punchline obvious? Try to think about why you find a joke funny. Even better, observe the way they react when a joke receives only a mild reaction.

As for the whole issue of copying, here is where I stand. If you directly take the words of another person and deliver them yourself, that is stealing material. However, if you take a concept and improve on it, then that is fair game. A lot of people have made millions by improving inventions by only 10%, why shouldn’t a student of comedy have the same opportunity?

There is also the issue of delivery. Just because something bombs for one comic, doesn’t mean it will be the same for the next guy. In most cases, the failure is the result of the actual performer, not the show and in fact, once you have a routine and some jokes, your work should be on improving the performer.

The first step is to be honest with yourself. If you are cynical and full of hatred, that’s ok, that’s who you are. Similarly, if you have the most positive outlook on life, then that should set the tone for your act. Audiences will relate to people who are honest and comfortable in their own skin. Audiences aren’t dumb. They can sense people who attempt to put on or try to form an image. If it’s incongruent with your body language, your mannerisms and your vibe, you will be blown out and bomb.

The next step after blowing bubbles is to graduate to the kick board - the actual jokes or material you will be performing. For comedy to be effective, it has to be congruent with who you are - we already know this. So too, do the subject matter for your comedy. It has to be personal and about things that are interesting or important to you. A big part of what makes it funny, is the enthusiasm towards the subject from the comic. It should be something you are at least passionate about so people watching will think, this guy knows a lot about this.

The best way to go about the material gathering phase is to write down your interests, your hobbies and then all the things about those that you like, dislike and amuse you. Chances are if they amuse you, they will also amuse others.

Once you have material, you are ready to start swimming. At first, it will feel weird, your timing will be off and you’ll most likely get water up your nose. Don’t worry - it’s all part of the process. It will take some time to work out how your jokes, your personality and your timing fit in with each other. The important thing is to practice. At home, at work, at the bus stop, practise on anyone that will listen. Test single jokes, test openers, test it all.

Only when you are the stage where you can put a few laps together, should you think about performing. Remember, you have to get over your fear of the water, learn how to blow bubbles and use the kick board before you can swim.

Coby Karl Back To Getting In Shape After Cancer Surgery

On April 2, 2007 Coby Karl, the son of Nuggets coach George Karl, underwent a seven hour surgery to remove cancerous lymph nodes. This was his second operation in just 13 months.

However, Coby is now back to basketball practicing and one saw him dribbling and shooting drills in the far corner of the Nuggets’ practice court.

Coby is Boise State basketball player and he said that he gets tired after practices but labelled it as a good thing because it shows that he was getting better.

After the surgery, Coby is feeling much better and he is slowly getting back into shape and gradually the 3 inch surgery scar below his chin is beginning to fade.

Coby said getting back into conditioning was tough but he also said that it would be tough only in the beginning.

Coby was in town to visit his father and he took time to watch a couple of Nuggets’ playoff game against the San Antonio Spurs. He is now returning to Boise State where he is set to graduate in May 2007 with a degree in mass communications.

After his graduation, Coby intends to concentrate just on basketball and he is hoping to be selected in the NBA draft when it begins in June 2007.

Coby now just hopes that NBA teams actually like him. There is no doubt his father does but Coby thinks he is biased. Coby hopes to play well at the NBA pre-draft camp to impress some NBA teams which will improve his chances of being selected.

In January 2006, Coby was diagnosed with papillary carcinoma, which is a treatable form of cancer. Three months later he had his thyroid removed and he underwent chemotherapy to kill any remaining cancer cells. However, the cancer returned. He is due to have a blood test done to check whether he is recovering but he does not spend his time living in fear of the cancer.

Coby finished third on Boise State’s career scoring list with 1,698 points. He is also the career leader in the number of games played, 3 pointer made and attempted.
