An Old Love

Around the world from me
are the many lands I’ve seen—
I, who have longed all his life,
that never shut his eyes
but to look up for his next flight

…for things I’ve yet to see—
wait, wait, wait, wait where
echoes from poets write,
wait, for far off destinies.

And where my thoughts are
I must go, for there too is my
. soul; thus, best to poke the
fire again!…

Analysis: I was asked the other day to do a verbal and quick analysis for a poem. It can be a terrifying experienced, especially if the person is a friend. What do you say? Like it or not, it is a worthwhile thing to do, and have done. And I’ve had a few hundred of my poems analyzed, poked at, chewed up; thus, when asked to analyze a poem, I do it with great care. But I do realize I am not going to contribute to anything other than my own attentive response. Well this poem baffled me and that was not good, but I studied the poem well after he left, I could only give him a few pieces of my thoughts prior to his leaving. I did afterwards mark phrases that caught my attention, good and bad, things that were striking or difficult, and where the focus was lost. I do trust my intuition, so that is one good thing.

There are three things I try to look at 1) the purpose of the poem, as I understand it to be 2) the central emphasis (problems and concerns, etc), and 3) imagery, tone, meter and so forth, while at the same time trying not to diminish the poetic effect the poem is trying to give. But then, I do not do analysis but on a few special occasions other persons poetry, for I have a hard enough time doing my poetry. But I thought a few comments might be worth mentioning. I guess, if I like the poem, I just like it, period. The Author

Here are two more poems, both different in their focus, poetic emphasis; both short poems, but enough to give a distinctive effect. The tone is of special importance. An analysis comes along with the two poems, not on Mr. Siluk’s poems, for that is for someone else to do, but on how he looks at times on other poems, recognizing the combination of different elements.

Stockbridge Romance [Chapter Three: The Bed]

Behind my pillar where I was sitting, the woman from the wall was now standing lit another cigarette, it was hot and bright I thought. It sent a pale glary glow, an ash like pathway to the ceiling, streaming in front of my face, half-intended I thought. I had stopped smoking in 1984, smoked for 22-years, so what could I say, I had some years on her to catch up to me before I could scold her. There was a lull, then a scramble for words with her, “Care, would you care to dance…sir?” she said.

In the last of the lull, on my part, I carried a silence, looking at my coke; her voice threw me off, an audible sincere tone. But she had been so cold to me this morning.

Even here, I thought as she stood behind me, she was trying to crush me with her casual idle, good and youthful looks and toned body. “Well,” she said.

“No, I don’t want to dance with you, so don’t bother me anymore!”

It was now 9:30 PM, and the first singer came up to sing, and started to sing, and this lady remained behind me. She had a gray glimmer to her eyes; they looked cold, dejection, and lack of sleep.

“Why,” she asked, “why will you not dance with me. I mean, you seem annoyed with me, as if I did something to you.”

I turned up the uncorked anger in my mind, said in a narrow but benevolent jinn way: “You insulted me on the wall today.”

“I did?” she commented, “How did I do that?”

“You said I was too slow, and you zoomed by me like you were some hot shot.” She held back a laugh, “See,” I said, “You’re laughing at me again!”

“But you were slow, and I was kind of teasing you I know, but it was meant as a maneuver to get to know you later, I thought you were handsome.”

“Oh…(I hesitated) but I had a bypass just a few months ago, a heart attack, I can’t climb or do all those things I used to do I suppose.”

“Oh…ooo, pardon me, I’m so sorry.” Then I thought: it would be pleasant to dance with her, to perhaps watch the night stars with someone beside myself, a good reason to start with a dance and see where it led, if a warm fire got going—good, if a quite one so be it. With politeness I said, “I’d like that dance very much.” She smiled a warm smile, loosening the atmosphere around us, then added, “It would be pleasant.” And we danced, matter-of-fact, we danced several dances, and then we went up to the karaoke machine and started singing, “Are you Lonesome Tonight,” an old Elvis song, and many of the folks like it in the bar area. And I went on to sing with her some more, her being my back up, “Love Me Tender.” As we continued to go to a third and forth song, I noticed she twisted about trying to see the words to the song, as they were big enough, and easily readable, it disengaged me from the songs for amount, “Anything wrong?” I asked. We had scarcely got over our first unpleasant moment, when she hit me with, “I’m ninety percent blind, I only have side vision (peripheral vision).”

Now I was feeling a little shame, as if I had no blood in my face. I think this was not self-satisfying for her, but it had to come out, and this was a good place for it.

“Well how did you know what I looked like on the wall?” I asked.

“I turned my head to the right, and caught your face from the narrow part of the side of my eye, and you looked good.”

She flattered me, and it felt good, I had been divorced, and she had also, we both confirmed that sitting up at the karaoke machine trying to figure out what song to sing next, when someone said, “You going to sing, if not I will!” With local etiquette we both stepped down from the platform and went over to my table, she had picked up her sweater on the way.

We sat down and talked until midnight about birds and the stone wall, and her being a teacher at one time before she became blind some seven years prior, and me a counselor, and the more we talked the more personal we became. Within these few moments we were lovers it seemed like. An affair had come; we had physical attraction and good spirits, jokes, and lots of listening skills to offer one another; it all seemed too perfect. But even if nothing would manifest out of this love affair to be, this intelligent circumstances, we would have company while in Beijing, and that would be worth it, so I thought, when she said: “Would you like to come to my room?”

The Throbbing, Pulsating World Of The VJs And RJs: Amalgamating Music And Technology!

“If music be the food for love, play on…”

Remember the bard’s fabulous line in his romantic comedy, “Twelfth Night”, that celebrates the romantic passion of humans through the magical device of melodies? Yes, ages have passed by since, and our ardent fervor for music is miraculously magnifying with the passing of every single day. The advent of the electronic media (radio and television) has further accelerated our quest for listening to melodies with providing greater exposure to our favorite singers and their albums. Ages ago, one would have to be a privileged member of Akbar’s “sabha” to listen to the soulful chanting of Miyan Tansen. However, years and ages passed after that and the 60’s and 70’s audience today fondly remember their pristine days of “Binaca Geetmala”, where the lively and spirited Ameen Sayani popularized the concept of live music broadcasting, and brought the timeless Indian classics to our drawing rooms.

Today, with an abundance of entertainment programs on television, one cannot help noticing young boys or girls anchoring different music shows. In Channel V or MTV, which airs music shows on the TV throughout the day, almost every hour the anchor changes and a fresh face comes up. Sometimes these programs are telecast live, in which the anchor has to interact with the live audience. These professionals are referred to as Video Jockeys, responsible for anchoring the music shows and also for maintaining the interests of viewers in that particular program. In radio broadcast, these professionals with pleasant and lively voice are called radio jockeys. In India, mainly the young generation is largely dependent upon the television or radio for viewing or listening to their favorite music. With a host of international music shows on Channel V and MTV, an ardent lover of Jazz or pop can get access to music from around the world. It is a mutually gratifying world for both the VJs and RJs who are making their livelihood by anchoring and organizing live music shows on the television and radio as well as for the viewers/audience who are mostly of younger age group and make specific
request for a particular song or a set of songs and music.

While today viewers/audience of these live music shows have noticed that whether it is classical, western, jazz, rock or pop albums that they play, they have a quintessential
knowledge of beats and different forms of music. However, many of the viewers/audience would also be curious to know how they handle various hardware equipment or work on different specialized software while playing their favorite numbers live.

While the critical components of radio broadcasting operations include an audio mixer, scheduler and playback system, these days the tech-savvy Radio Jockeys mostly use powerful digital music players for FM Radio programs. With such equipment, they ensure gapless, continuous playing with intelligent mix point detection where music mixes and fades at the right point at the right time. With a host of high-end digital equipment, music is fully controlled, using the best Audio tools ever. Radio disc jockeys play music, chat, deliver news, weather, or sports, or hold conversations with celebrities or call-in listeners. Like Club DJ’s, they mix music, sound effects, and special effects and occasionally provide time-filling chatter between songs in technically equipped radio stations. Being extremely organized and synchronized is critical to the radio station, where songs fill a certain span of time and commercials are also aired during specific blocks. In most radio stations, computer software programs are used to schedule the music for each radio program or play listener requests. When DJs are “off air,” they might record commercials for later broadcast, preview new music and prepare material for later shows.

On the other hand, the advent of digital satellite and cable has brought greater diversity with Television channels such as MTV and Channel V, which focus on playing music videos and other music-related programming. With the explosion of MTV and MuchMusic in the 1980s and 1990s, music videos became a new art form, a new way for an artist or group to express their songs visually. After it’s advent in 1981, MTV started nonstop broadcasting of music-video clips intended to boost sales on the music charts. With the coming of digital video editing, the VJs of these channels have used visual manipulations and effects in music- video clips.
These days, many VJ’s even edit their material live on a computer, which could change and recompose the material in many ways. Some use found footage and other film material to tell their story, while others produce their own footage.

Today, after the advent of the Internet, live streaming music via the Internet radio stations have opened up new vistas of enjoying the melodies from all over the world. With a host of options ranging from shareware and freeware (designed to record streaming audio from online Radio stations) to webcasts and other Internet audio sources, the convergence of the Radio and Internet definitely mark the beginning of tremendous opportunities for the music aficionados.

Oboe Reeds: Learning How to Experiment

As you may have heard before, being consistent in your reed making helps ensure
consistent reeds. A simple but powerful statement indeed.

Reed making is a rather long and varied process, and most successful reed makers
would recommend that you do the same thing every time. That way you can slowly
make corrections without losing your point of reference.

But what if you want to try something new?

The spirit of adventure definitely has a place in reed making, as long as you have
the time (and patience) to do some experimenting. There is so much new equipment
available to oboists today that can help (or hurt) your reed making adventures.

There are new kinds of staples coming out all the time, and someone is always
introducing either a new gouging machine or shaper tip to the market.

Sometimes it is possible to borrow these new “toys” from friends to try, and other
times you may be able to try a shaper tip on loan from a double reed company.

Just remember, don’t be afraid to try new things! That’s how you learn.

But here is a tip to make your experimenting as productive and efficient as possible:

Whatever you do, don’t get too caught up in the frenzy and try to change more than
one thing at once.

It may go without saying, but reed making with any new materials at all is just like a
science experiment. Remember those days back in lab class?

You never change more than one variable at a time when testing something new.
You want to be able to determine just how
the new change affects all areas of the experiment.

Some things you might try:

change the length you tie the cane on
try gouging your cane a few millimeters thicker

Try these and many other things! As long as you keep
everything else exactly the same, you will have conducted a successful experiment
and you will learn something.

It is surprising and fun to see how your reeds will change, and sometimes (hopefully
most times) it will be for the better!

The Aviator (Movie Review)

Nominated for 6 Golden Globes and 11 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, The Aviator wows audiences with its breadth of scenery and vivid realism. Director Martin Scorsese, known for a host of excellent films such as Raging Bull (1980), Goodfellas (1990), Casino (1995), and Gangs Of New York (2002) - not to mention the highly controversial The Last Temptation Of Christ (1988) - by no doubt turns out his best work since Tommy DeVito (Joe Pesci) sought to become a made man. The Aviator springs to life with nostalgic settings and a lavish tapestry of color and form, evoking all the enthusiasm indicative of Howard Hughes’ unique lust for life. John Logan, known for such films as The Last Samurai (2003) and Gladiator (2000), presents a screenplay that provides some insight into the enigmatic Hughes and captures the mannerisms of those who shared that life with him. In short, the film is a masterpiece of visual imagery and first-rate cinematography few movie lovers can afford to miss…

The Aviator focuses on the early life (1930-1947) of America’s most eccentric and bewildering billionaire playboy, Howard Hughes. Know for his seemingly erratic business dealings and fearless sense of adventure, Hughes (Leonardo DiCaprio) turned a small inherited fortune into an enormous corporate empire. And along the way, he captured the imagination of those around him with an attitude that embraced risk and life itself. Inheriting a majority interest in the Hughes Tool Company (founded by his father), Hughes embarks on a career in Hollywood where he produces a number of notable films including Hell’s Angels, The Front Page, and Scarface. Hughes’ obsessive dedication to perfection makes his stock rise in Hollywood and even helps launch the career of Jean Harlow…

But Howard Hughes is not just a one-trick pony, and his interest soon turns to the flourishing aviation industry where he becomes an integral part of TWA and pilots his own planes on a regular basis. His driving energy would lead Hughes to enter the defense industry, the electronics industry, Las Vegas casinos, and numerous other activities in the years ahead. But along the way, he deals with a cast of characters colorful in their own right. Romances with Ava Gardner (Kate Beckinsale) and Katherine Hepburn (Cate Blanchett) provide insight into Hughes’ personal life, while Noah Dietrich (John C. Reilly), Hughes’ assistant and right-hand man, sacrifices much in his own life to enable Hughes to live out his latest visions and inspirations. When Hughes makes the bold move of constructing the Spruce Goose - the largest airplane ever built (and able to land on water no less) - Senator Ralph Owen Brewster (Alan Alda) accuses the billionaire of war-profiteering. Hughes takes on the Senator full-force and with all the zest that marked his previous ventures. Vowing that the Spruce Goose will fly, in the face of highly publicized claims that it will not, Hughes proves his critics wrong, and the Spruce Goose rises to the occasion…

Despite its loss to Million Dollar Baby at the Oscars, The Aviator can take pride in being nominated as one of the best films of the year (along with Finding Neverland, Ray, and Sideways). And the film is certainly deserving of that high honor. Few films better illustrate the beauty of America, or more importantly, the mountains that can be moved when a single individual lives his life with ambition, drive, inspiration, and a naked enthusiasm for all that life has to offer. Overall, The Aviator is among the best films of the past several years, and movie aficionados would be well-advised to watch every last minute with same enthusiasm of a young Howard Hughes…

The Joining of Humanity in a Common Cause

Much time has been expended on the subject of alleviating wars and re-uniting the human race. Some agree that if perhaps humankind would limit their infighting, chaos and controversy long enough to understand that we are all on this pale blue dot together and joined in a common cause of humanity, then all the other silly wars, sound and fury might appear rather trivial.

In fact Ronald Reagan once made a statement about the incredible build up of war machines and the cold war and he said it is too bad we cannot join together in a common cause with all nations to fight another force besides ourselves. Thus fighting a Climate Crisis, Near Earth Object (meteor, comet, giant asteroid) and defeating it, would unite the world and all nations you see?

Unfortunately, as much as human beings are a social creature they too are a war mongering lot and it is too bad we cannot take that negative energy and put it to a positive cause other than killing ones own species thru war, you know?

I ask will this be the generation that works to put all that behind us once and for all and figure out a way that the human race can progress, innovate and move forward without concentrating on killing one another? Time will tell, it always does.

I certainly hope this article is of interest and that is has propelled thought. The goal is simple; to help you in your quest to be the best in 2007. I thank you for reading my many articles on diverse subjects, which interest you.

Online Gambling Gains Respectability

The first appearance of online casinos in the mid 90’s sparked the beginning of a new era, utilizing the internet in a way unimagined of before.  Online Gambling had begun and was set to become one of the webs most popular pastimes!

Some of the first few online casinos that appeared, have, rather remarkably, survived the test of time and have become leaders in their field. Others however, were one hit wonders and due to poor marketing coupled with abysmal customer support they failed miserably and disappeared shortly after opening.

Of course, some were run by genuine businesses wanting to build a reputation for fairness and integrity and stand the test of time in an up and coming, lucrative, market. These were the unfortunates that tried hard but failed.

With all new markets however, the conmen will appear, ripping off customers and grabbing as much of other peoples cash as they can without any morals, scruples or sympathy.

Unfortunately the online gaming market has picked up more than its fair share of these conmen since its inception and this led, in many peoples minds to the whole industry being tarred with the same brush.

The Press also has a part to play their dogged determination to knock online gambling as often as possible, citing cases of addiction. Of course, where fortunes can be won there will always be an element of addiction. However, these cases are fairly rare and the vast majority of people can gamble small amounts responsibly.  Look at how many have a weekly flutter on the lotto without any problems whatsoever.

It’s worth noting at this point that the industry in general, over the past few years, has somewhat gained a reputation for fairness and security.  The conmen are now few and far between, although admittedly, some still exist. The leading sites also have measures in place so that problem gamblers get help with their addiction and are often barred from playing.

These days however, online casinos, poker rooms and other gaming sites have become fashionable and with the massively growing popularity, the numbers of people playing online has grown exponentially.  In some countries or areas though gambling is still illegal, so check what the rules are for your area before playing.

So what’s the easiest way of choosing a safe and secure online environment in which to play casino or poker games? Let’s look at some of the ways in which you can protect yourself when gambling online.

1. Stick with a Well-Known Company
Large international gaming companies are now available online and have a reputation to preserve. They can’t afford any bad press as it will affect the whole of their operations, both on and offline.

2. Word of Mouth
What better way to get first hand information on how a site is operated than asking others how they have been treated there and whether they find it an enjoyable site or not.

3. Consult a Gambling Portal
There are a great many gambling portals available online giving advice on all aspects of online gambling, including, but certainly not limited to casinos, poker, bingo and skill games.
Read the reviews of the gaming sites they feature or read their forums for the “word of mouth” recommendations. The top gambling portals only promote reliable, tried and tested sites.
Due to the close working relationship held between the site owners and contributers, they are a well informed bunch who can advise with some authority or where to play safely.
Portals are also a great way in which to learn more about how to play. Many portal site pages are adorned with rules, strategy guides and often free to play games to try out your skills before committing to regular play.

4. Secure Payments
All of the worthwhile sites accept many different payment options with secure facilities to ensure your data is protected. Only play at the sites where your details are safe and secure.

5. Set a Limit
Before you start, set a limit on how much you would be prepared to loose and don’t cross that line.

Using the above information you should be well on your way to having an enjoyable time when playing online in a trustworthy and respectable site.

Good Luck!

When it comes to daily entertainment, many people enjoy their spare time and low cost of recreational choices like viewing television, playing video games, and renting movies online.

Why Rent Movies?

People rent movies for many incomparable reasons. One of the most popular departments at your local video store is the new movie releases section. Poker Online - The Name of the Game

People have always had a fascination with names.

Thousands of books have been written all over the world in various languages, on the subject of names, their heritage, their meaning, or even how to choose a name for your child.

In Spain, where the history of names is celebrated more than in most other European countries, it is interesting to see the wide variety of usernames that people use when they sign-up to play online poker.

Spanish names themselves reflect the rich culture inherent in the country, and are often very significant and symbolic. Many first names are derived from those of saints or other religious figures. The surname is traditionally derived from the parent’s surnames; the father’s followed by the mother’s. However, this tradition may soon be lost as Spain has recently introduced legal provisions to allow parents to freely decide the order and use of the surname. It is also not unknown for a married woman to have up to six-surnames.

So what’s in a poker name?

Well, it is very typical to see men using female names and women using male names while playing online poker. It is also common to see the use of longer names for the username, more so than in most other countries, where shorter names or abbreviations are used. Perhaps this reflects the typical Spanish culture and adoration for names, such as the double-barrelled surnames, respecting both the father and mother surnames in the family.

Both men and women also like using pseudo-names as a way of projecting some form of online pseudo-identity, or to create a mystique surrounding their anonymity.

St Minver, the online game company that operates many online poker sites including Juega Poker Ya, found that the names of animals such as (bull or wolf) were particularly popular usernames assumed by many men when playing poker on the internet.

According to research by Juega Poker, women often assumed male identities when they play online poker, because they think people might make fun of them playing a traditionally male card game.

The same can be said for the many men that sign-up to play online bingo games. Men perceived bingo as being something women do most, so they assumed female names in order to save embarrassment. This however, has not stopped many poker players also signing-up for online bingo and vice versa.

It was also felt that men assumed women’s names for the benefit of poker chat rooms, so that women would feel more comfortable chatting to them online. Perhaps they even expected women to reveal more information this way!

Other popular usernames chosen by male poker players were food-related, or film related. While women chose names of flowers and siblings, or those that they would like to use for their own children one day.

Overall it was likely that Spanish players used their surname rather than an abbreviation or pseudo-name. Again perhaps reflecting the respect for the parents surname or the beauty of their name deeply rooted within Spanish culture.

It is often said that it is possible to tell someone’s personality from their name. Some also believe that the name we are given at birth pre-disposes the personality we will grow into as we get older. Is it possible then to tell the type of people that sign up to play poker online, just by looking at their first name? Could it help you gain an advantage in knowing the type of poker player they may be?

Below is a list of the top 5 Spanish male and female names and a quick example of their associated personalities, taken from poker players that have signed-up to the St Minver network:

MALE

Angel - These are very daring, audacious and enterprising in their behaviour.
Antonio – If you think that they can be fooled then you are absolutely wrong.
Carlos – Can be indecisive and also a bit reserved.
David - Once they make a goal then nothing would be able to divert them from their aim.
Javier – Optimistic that everything will turn out just fine in the end.
Jose – Brazen at heart and want constant adventures to add spice to their life.
Luis – A debonair that enjoys being wined and dined in the right kind of atmosphere.
Miguel - Does everything to extreme, doesn’t like leaving unfinished business.
Pedro - Excited by forms of combat or action.
Raul - Sharp-witted and can easily understand a situation. No one can take you for a ride.

FEMALE

Adriana - These are the business class people and they never mix ‘business with pleasure’.
AnaAnna - Not the fanatic kind and knows how to maintain their limitation.
Carmen - Communicating with others is no problem for them. Loves group discussions.
Elena - Thrives on heated topics and does not hesitate to put forward their views.
IsaIsabel - Feel the need to be motivated and applauded for their achievements.
Laura - Needs to be reminded from time to time that they possess intellectual power.
Maria – Very emotional and ferocious when dealing with both the sides of coin.
Rosa - You are straightforward and blunt in your opinions and do not tolerate any kind of excuses.
Sandra - You are very vigilant and shrewd.
Toni - You change your opinions and views very fast.

From the lists above we can see the personalities of players that are signing up to play online poker. Perhaps we can tell what type of game they might play, be it aggressive, passive etc.

What we cannot tell is whether these players are having any luck at becoming prosperous players. To do that, perhaps they should follow Chinese philosophers who believe that in choosing a name, we can improve our fortunes. Maybe try choosing a username like, ”lucky Luke”.

As the Chinese say, ”a positive name brings forth a positive mind, a positive mind brings luck in kind”.

Bob Hope Stories

Once when he was a little boy in England, Leslie Hope (He later renamed himself Bob after a race car driver he idolized) wanted to pick an apple off a tree. Symbolic of his career, he didn’t want just any apple but the highest one possible. He lost his balance, fell and permanently changed the shape of his nose.

His big break in Hollywood was getting the part Jack Benny turned down in the Paramount film “The Big Broadcast Of 1938″. The director Mitchell Leisen could not stand the star of the film, the ornery WC Fields, who would run off the movie set and come back too soused to do the required scenes, flub his lines and scream for his lawyer. Liesen found Hope much more cooperative, although he was a nervous ham in front of the camera. Desperate to be a more traditional leading man like Fred Macmurray, Hope begged Paramount to pay for a nose job but they refused. It was in this film he got to sing “Thanks For The Memories” which along with his ski nose became Hope’s trademarks.

For his radio show when Hope found out that Jack Benny hired two writers for $1,000 a week, he in turn hired ten writers for $100 a week each and hated paying. At times he would gather the staff at the bottom of a stairwell and toss their paychecks down as paper airplanes. Other times Hope would interrupt his scribes intimacy with their wives by calling their houses very late at night to go over new material. For their part, the writers created the Hope movie character, egomaniacal, womanizing and cowardly, all but the last trait were true.

Hope’s relationship with Bing Crosby was love-hate. In one of their early road movies Paramount Studios filmed two endings in which each of the boys ended up with Dorothy Lamour, to see which result audiences preferred. They overwhelmingly chose Bing which annoyed Hope, who got his costar back by constantly reminding him that he wore a toupee. In one scene both had to lie on the same bed together (innocently, they were resting) and Bing refused to take his hat off. No amount of coaxing from Paramount executives could get Crosby to change his mind, he did not want to hear Bob’s toupee barbs. Hope later said the greatest acting performance he ever gave was smiling when Bing won his academy award for Going My Way (1944).

His frequent leading lady, Lucille Ball, was an even match for Hope in the ambition department. She lobbied the comedian to hire her little-known band leader husband Desi Arnaz for his radio show. She later regretted it when Desi slept with every showgirl who applied for a job, with rumors flying about Hope ending up with his second choices. Delores Hope was as long suffering as Lucy was. One time she was among a crowd waiting backstage for him after a live show. A reporter asked her,”Are you connected to Bob Hope in some way Miss?” “No, I’m just his wife.”

In the late 30s, Hope made fun of veterans on his radio show. Performing at army bases was a way to bring up ratings. Then came World War II with Hope and a number of other stars recruited by the government for a war bond selling, victory caravan tour. Unlike many of the pampered celebrities who complained about the cramped quarters on their shared train, the ex-vaudevillian Hope was exhilarated by the travel. It was no problem for him to go overseas to entertain the troops.

At first Hope found America’s homesick young fighting men to be the easiest audience he ever faced. Jokes that would die in the states would get uproarious laughter from the troops. In the beginning Hope stayed out of combat areas, but then he reasoned that those in actual battles needed him the most. Hope became addicted to the to the danger of flying in planes that might get shot down or performing in places that had recently been attacked. But he was greatly moved by the injuries he saw in hospital wards, and quietly help set up several of the soldiers he met in their own businesses after the war ended. Later he could not understand the Vietnam situation, getting in trouble when he repeatedly suggested we should bomb the enemy into submission. Hope’s love for the troops stayed constant, even in Nam when they booed him.

Hope got along great with all the Presidents he met, whether he agreed with them or not. He once said that Roosevelt laughed so hard at his jokes he almost voted democratic. He loved telling the story about a marine in World War II who was disappointed that he had not killed a Japanese soldier. At the edge of a jungle he tried to smoke them out, by shouting,” To hell with Hirohito!” It worked, a Japanese soldier came out and shouted,” To hell with Roosevelt!” But the marine lowered his weapon,” Darn it, I can’t shoot a fellow Republican.”
