Poker - Epidemic Taking Over the World

It seems like we are living in truly wondrous times - at least poker-wise. The world of virtual gaming has grown by almost scary percentages over the last three years. with thousands of online poker sites in existence and practically a dozen poker-sites-newborns are uploaded daily. Whether it’s all the celeb’s showing interest in the pokergame, or all the regular Joe’s discovering online poker - or maybe it’s a new generation, already Internet friendly, that are joining the online poker forces all around the world - we don’t know. What we do know is that this is a force to Be reckoned with.

Although we can definitely see a rise in all the Internet poker scene - there is a rise in the physical poker world too. For example - in the year 2002 a total of 631 poker players signed up for the WSOP (World Series of Poker), a few years later in 2005 a surprising total of 5,619 poker players signed up for the WSOP. A growth that is nothing less than amazing.

How come poker became so popular? well, our not very educated guess is that there’s a slow movement from the poker games played at home to the online platform and from there to any poker-pro competition. The winner of the 2005 WSOP Joseph Hatchem came from that exact neighborhood. He was not born a poker pro, nor did he dedicate most of his life to poker - his father is no online gambling genius - he was just like you and I. A poker loving dude - who discovered he’s actually good at it. That’s the beauty of poker in a nutshell - it allows anyone to become a poker god. All you have to do is to play - and play and play - until you are good enough to play with the poker pros - and who knows maybe you’ll be the 2007 WSOP grand winner.

Technology and Us

“What is the best use of technology?”

This question is asked more and more as the pace of technological change has accelerated. Greater speed, power, inter-connectedness etc. can produce all sorts of obvious benefits. We visit distant places quickly and cheaply thanks to jet airplanes. We have access to cheap, reliable power in our homes and in our cars. With the computer revolution, we can create, manage, transfer and store vast amounts of data in ways that would have been unimaginable to earlier generations.

But with those benefits have come come very serious drawbacks. The jet that can whisk you to Hawaii or Paris can also be used to kill thousands of people and inflict billions of dollars of damage. Cheap power is often generated by unsafe, polluting plants. Computer technology and the internet can be used to invade out privacy and spread false information around the world at the click of a mouse.

“What is the best use of technology?” is certainly an important question, one that probably deserves a good deal more attention. But there is another, related, question that is rarely asked, one that may ultimately be far more important:

“How do we make the best use ourselves as we live our lives employing these new technologies?”

Take our interaction with computers. I first saw computers being routinely used in the mid-1960s by ticket agents in airports. A third of a century later, they are everywhere - at work, in schools, at home.

By the early 1980’s there was increasing talk of Video Display Terminal (VDT) problems with eyes, neck pain etc. Terms like repetitive stress injury(RSI) and carpal tunnel syndrome entered our everyday language. It became commonplace to see people walking around with special braces for their lower arms and wrists. Surgery is increasingly a last resort.

Why did this happen? Was it faulty computer and furniture design? This is what ergonomists have argued and a whole industry has sprung up to re-design the work environment to make injuries less likely. Countless magazine and newspaper articles give ergonomically-inspired advice on proper sitting, screen and keyboard placement etc.

But the RSI epidemic continues unabated nonetheless. Why?

I believe the principal reason is our failure to look closely at ourselves and how we function as we go through life - our failure to ask ourselves “How am I using myself as I drive, as I walk, as I clean the dishes? As I use my computer?”

The best ergonomic design will do nothing to prevent RSI if we are using ourselves badly. And if we are using ourselves well, we can function without undue strain even in difficult, awkward situations. Ergonomic solutions are not useless but they are only a part of the solution.

So how can you learn to use yourself more efficiently? Is there a proven method one can learn?

The work of F. Matthias Alexander, today commonly referred to as the Alexander Technique, is just such a method. It has a long history of helping people with precisely the sort of stress-related issues that more and more people today are facing. The whole question of how we use ourselves is precisely what Alexander spend his life’s work on. Indeed his third book was titled “The Use of the Self”.

The introductions to this and two other books by Alexander were written by Professor John Dewey. Dewey was America’s most famous philosopher and a leading proponent of the school of philosophy known as Pragmatism. He was also very influential in the development of American education in the first part of the last century. He is sometimes called “The father of American education.”

Dewey knew from firsthand experience that Alexander’s ideas and teaching method (today carried on my thousands of teachers worldwide) was of the utmost importance to us all as we faced the challenges of rapid technological change.

In his 1932 introduction to “The Use of the Self” he wrote:

“In the present state of the world, it is evident that the control we have gained of physical energies, heat, light, electricity, etc., without having first secured control of our use of ourselves is a perilous affair. Without the control of our use of ourselves, our use of other things is blind; it may lead to anything.”

“If there can be developed a technique which will enable individuals really to secure the right use of themselves, then the factor upon which depends the final use of all other forms of energy will be brought under control. Mr. Alexander has evolved this technique.”

This wasn’t just an abstract notion with Dewey. In his book “Freedom to Change”, the late Frank Pierce Jones of Tufts University wrote of a conversation he had with Dewey a few years before he died:

“(Dewey) said that he had been taken by (the Alexander Technique) first because it provided a demonstration of the unity of mind and body. He thought that the demonstration had struck him more forcibly than it might have struck someone who got the sensory experience easily and quickly, because he was such a slow learner. He had always been physically awkward, he said, and performed all actions too quickly and impulsively and without thought. ‘Thought’ in his case was saved for ‘mental’ activity, which had always been easy for him. It was a revelation to discover that thought could be applied with equal advantage to everyday movements.

“The greatest benefit he got from lessons, Dewey said, was the ability to stop and think before acting. Physically, he noted an improvement first in his vision and then in breathing. Before he had lessons, his ribs had been very rigid. Now they had a marked elasticity which doctors still commented on, though he was close to eighty-eight.”

Alexander’s ideas are well worth exploring by anyone concerned about the issues raised in this article.

Find The Perfect Photo Printer

Just like all popular consumer technology products, it seems like a new photo printer comes out every day. Who knows which one to choose? If you’ve ever walked into a computer or office supply store then you know what I mean. In order to avoid the “deer in the headlights” expression that comes over most of our faces as we walk down the printer aisle, here are some things to consider when narrowing your photo printer choices.

GET A “PHOTO QUALITY PRINTER”

If you’ve made the decision to never walk into a photo shop again because you will be printing your photos from home, then you can narrow your choices to “Photo Quality Printers”. Unlike regular inkjets and others, “Photo Quality Printers” have more colors to offer. This provides a much bigger palette for mixing colors and creating shades. Most regular and high-end inkjet printers use three colors plus black. You may not notice much difference when looking at them separately, but put an inkjet photo next to a photo printed on a “photo printer” and the difference is night and day. Newer model “Photo Quality Printer” will come with six colors and two settings: photo and normal.

HOW MUCH DO YOU HAVE TO SPEND?

The quickest way to narrow your choices to just a few is price. While there are a million models to choose from, they range from just under $100 to a possible mortgage payment or two. Ignore those photo printers that are out of your price range and focus on getting the biggest value for the money you have.

WATCH OUT FOR PRICEY CONSUMABLES!

Even if you walk out of the store with a great deal on your new photo printer, it doesn’t end there. The real cost of a photo printer is determined by the cost of consumables (i.e. ink and paper). The amount of ink used by different printers to print the same picture is relatively comparable so it is best to compare ink cartridges by volume. If you won’t be doing much printing then this won’t really matter. If you are going to compare by # of pages per print cartridge, keep in mind that this calculation is based on 5% coverage of an 8.5”x11” piece of paper using only plain text. If you are printing photos your calculation will have to be adjusted. An average size 4”x6” print constitutes roughly 20% coverage. Add to that the fact that prints require that the colors be overlaid to create the full range of colors in the image.

As for paper, there are photo printers out there that print well on regular photocopy stock, while others require quality photo stock to get a good print. Photo stock can get very expensive with high volume printing. Make sure you check this out before purchasing.

SAMPLE THE MERCHANDISE

All stores provide sample glossy pictures next to each photo printer. Don’t use these as a basis for your decision. These are printed in some office by people who do nothing all day but try to optimize results from their product under perfect conditions on perfect paper. Test it out yourself by printing something on your own, like a colorful webpage or desktop screenshot using the manufacturers default settings.

DO YOUR HOMEWORK!

Go online and read some unbiased consumer reviews. Stay away from “sponsored” reviews on a single model. Find a site that offers a comparison of the most popular photo printers on the market. This is especially important if you are buying your photo printer from a small shop which may not offer live demos for you to test the product. There’s nothing wrong with learning from other people’s good and bad experiences. Happy Shopping!!

Inside The Oscars - Nominee Will Smith’s Aura

All the Academy Awards nominees for Best Actor have given outstanding performances… on the surface. They spoke their lines believably, developed an interesting character, got the voice, the walk, the look. Perhaps most extraordinary, these superb actors received direction with enough objectivity to improve a character’s portrayal, rather than destroying it.

No wonder the Oscar nominees are so greatly admired. Yet only a tiny minority of them have gone all the way, changing their CHAKRAS. This takes the greatest talent, and a rare kind of courage.

What does it mean to shift that deep, playing a part? Nothing within you feels the same. Imagine a length of beige cloth that you are dying green. Most people would be satisfied with a cloth that looks green. But you will not be satisfied with some simple dunk in the vat. You find a way to do the ultimate transformation. Consequently, the cloth changes so completely that if you held the most powerful microscope in the world up that cloth, the most minute fibers would glow bright green.

Well, okay, here is something easier to imagine: What happens when an aura reader like me turns movie critic? I can read the deepest possible shifts within an actor. And that is just what I’ll do in this article, with an in-depth critique of Will Smith’s performance in “The Pursuit of Happyness.” (If you would like to receive links to the photos I used in this article, email me. You can find an address at the Rose Rosetree website.)

Since I can read auras from regular photographs (and could teach you to do the same, incidentally), it is easy to compare the aura of an actor just being himself to his still shot from the movie, where he is in character. Did I see this movie? No, and as a recovering English Major I must admit that I am not thrilled with a title that spells a word so horribly wrong. But I have put this aside in my role as Auric Movie Critic. Reading from photos, I asked this question: Who could transform all the way? Here is what I found about Will Smith in this movie, where he plays a a single dad struggling to make a better life for himself and his young son (played by his own son in real life):

Root chakra—How his personality projects when he enters a room
As himself: Will is sunny, strong, uncommonly lively, with a great sense of humor and the ability to set off laughter in others. For an actor, he sure is a balanced, normal person. Physical intelligence is very strong, again, more than with most actors. (And, yes, I appreciate that physical intelligence is a job requirement for any professional actor.)
In the movie: He acts the same as usual, just toning down some of his natural outrageousness.

Sex chakra—What would he be like as a lover?
As himself: Not just physical as an actor, Will is very physical as a lover, too, plus being tender and strong. However, the sexual aspect of his life is not particularly on display in public, not unless his aura is being read. Count all this as the highest praise.
In the movie: Again, he is playing himself.

Solar plexus chakra—Handling power, what is his pattern at the time of this photo?
As himself: Investigating this is where the aura reader nearly bursts into tears. Not only does Will Smith has a huge projection at this part of his aura. Rather, the history is here of a man who has struggled more than I ever would have guessed from the two previous chakras. He has been walloped by life numerous times and put himself back together. Clearly, he has aptly been named “Will.” What an inspiration!
Note, too, that the degree of self-generated spiritual healing within has been exceptional. Why? Because Will’s root chakra does not show signs of trauma. You know how people talk about forgive and forget? It takes really powerful forgiveness for someone to release trauma from the most primal chakra, at the base of the torso.
In the movie: At last, here comes the first big shift for Will in this role. In character, he is NOT powerful. Instead, he struggles with feeling powerless, doubting himself, and being very careful not to let his worries show. Really touching!

Heart chakra—How does he handle emotions?
As himself: Simple emotions, one at a time—that is his specialty. Leave aside huge emotional depths, agonizing, ambivalence, and big psychological inquiry. This is a man who stays open to feelings but does not dwell upon them.
In the movie: Playing himself again, Will is projecting a subdued cheerfulness.

Communication chakra—Truthfulness? Talent? What shows here?
As himself: Will is conscious of having the ability to project strong and believable emotions. In the publicity photo I am reading, he hides behind this ability, suggesting a rather private man for whom public appearances are a job, not a requirement to bare his soul before strangers.
In the movie: Will seems focused and more serious than comes naturally to him, but otherwise there is no significant alteration to his usual throat chakra display.

Spirituality chakra—How does he connect to God?
As himself: Will Smith connects to God fully, unquestioningly. As with his emotions, the actor shows something passionate and true, but neither complicated, intellectualized, nor needing a lot of fancy explanation. It just is.
In the movie: He is playing himself. If he had been able to show struggle here, comparable to what displays in his power center, the performance would be way more effective. Otherwise, the sureness and serenity of this third eye clashes with the portrayal of a man being tested.

Soul expression chakra—Deep down, how does this person feel as a human being?
As himself: Beautifully balanced with the spiritual connection at the third eye, Will Smith knows how to be human with zest and integrity. He actually is a self-made, real-life expert on happiness.
In the movie: He is, again, playing himself.

Summary: Great acting, this is not. Yet Will Smith lights up the screen because, as a person, he truly is magnificent. Yes, he broadcasts real inspiration, especially what he models from his solar plexus chakra about personal empowerment.

The Appeal of Playing Poker

Over the past few years, the game of poker has literally exploded. There are millions of players trying out the game for the first time and thousands each day learning the game of poker for the first time.

Internet poker is partly responsible for the boom with players from all over the world logging into the vast array of online poker rooms.

There’s a wide choice of sites to play in too with many becoming big brand names over the past few years which has fuelled the poker revolution as more and more players are subjected to the big money advertising that is used to attract new players to the game.

Poker is often featured on TV with big name players battling it out for huge amounts of money in tournaments. Commercials offer attractive incentives to play in many of the online poker sites and the added attraction of being able to play with celebrity players online has brought many into the game.

Poker is of course an easy game to play and a beginner can learn while playing for free online in any of the poker rooms. Within an hour or so, even a player with no prior knowledge of the game can understand the rules and be taking part in what has often been quoted as being the most exciting game online!

However, like most skill based games, although it is easy to learn and start playing, over the long term you’ll need to fully understand all aspects of the game in order to consistently play well.

Over the long term, poker is a game of skill with opponents battling their wits against other players. Knowing when to play your cards and when to fold them comes with practice and patience. Being able to read players and note changes in their play is difficult and really only comes with time but when you’ve mastered the skill there really is nothing stopping you.

Pitting your wits against other players in a mind game of cat and mouse with the skilled player coming out on top adds to the unique appeal of poker.

Want to find out more about playing online poker well? If you do there are a number of options to help you improve your game without having to rely completely on practice and learning by your mistakes.

Investing or borrowing a book or two will explain the game in more depth and online you’ll find a plethora of great articles and strategy guides that can be used to improve your play quickly, which cuts out a lot of the initial practice time that you would otherwise require.

Get good and those tournaments, either on or offline start to seem more obtainable and inviting. Try out some small, online poker tournaments before progressing to the next stage and if you’re good enough, poker stardom.

Piercing the Veil

What distinguishes a merely good fantasiste from a truly memorable author of weird fiction? One highly significant aspect of a wildly imaginative author is the ability to conjure hints of a world far greater than the one described in the actual story.

In The Shadow out of Time, Lovecraft writes one such passage. The following description is embedded within a passage describing a 150-million-year-old city populated by gigantic tentacled monsters. As Lovecraft shows, though, even these unfathomable creatures have unspeakable fears of their own:

“There were multiple levels of black vaults below, and never-opened trapdoors, sealed down with metal bands and holding dim suggestions of some special peril.”

These vaults, it is later explained, contain a still older and more sinister race from beyond the stars, which invaded the earth when the builders of this ancient city still ruled as the dominant lifeforms. It’s actually disappointing that Lovecraft chooses to reveal this, since brief hints might have been far more evocative, and allowed the reader simply to grasp the sheer scale of the world described.

Joshi describes howMachen used a similar tactic in his masterful story The White People. The narrator described, innocently, her acquaintaince with the “Aklo letters” and various other mysterious aspects of the supernatural culture with which she associates. As Joshi notes, these mysterious phrases peppered throughout the story allow us glimpses of a culture unknown in history, one with its own traditions, language, and even games.

Not only does this enhance the story’s realism, elevating it, as Lovecraft reommended, the the level of an actual hoax. Such hints set the imagination whirling, and allow the reader to create, in his or her own mind, a sense of the three-dimensionality of the world “beyond the veil.”

One final example: in the novel American Gods, which I’m thoroughly enjoying, Gaimain writes of the hall of forgotten gods, where are preserved the gods whose names have been forgotten by history; gods so ancient that even the gods of Egypt and Greece had long forgotten about them. These are mankind’s most primal deities: mammoth skulls, old shamans, carnivorous birds, and, in a particularly tantilizing hint, a certain god “with the head of an octopus!” Throughout the main character’s tour of this supernatural museum, he gains some sense of the time distances involved in the lives of gods, and grasps dimly that some things are unfathomably ancient even to them.

In my own writing, I tend to adhere to this motif more than almost any other. Not only do such implications bring the story to fuller life in the mind of the reader; they create what might be termed “Easter Eggs” for dedicated fans, or even those who glance over a story, to see a greater depth than the average paranormal “sketch” story. By allowing readers to feel as though they have “pierced the veil,” the writer allows them, to some degree, to write the backstory themselves. What better way to draw them into a new world?

Blackjack Variations

Blackjack, or Twenty-One, has always been one of the most popular games of chance in casinos world wide. The game seems devilishly simple. Closest to 21 without going over wins. There are strategies that one must employ to maximize their winning opportunities, but the basic rules are uncomplicated: You and the dealer both get two cards; one of his is face up. Aces are worth one or eleven, face cards are worth ten, everything else is their face value. You can hit (add a card) or stand (stick with what you’ve got). You can hit as many times as you want, but if you go over 21 you lose. If you don’t, and you are closer to 21 than the dealer, you win. If not, you lose. If you tie, nobody wins. If you get dealt an Ace with a face card on your first two cards, you have Blackjack and win automatically, assuming the dealer does not also have Blackjack.

Your wager is determined before the cards come out. After they come out, you can Double (match your wager and get exactly one additional card) or Split (if both of your cards have the same value, you can separate them and treat them as two different Blackjack hands, with the amount of your initial wager riding on each). Although it is rare now due to the edge it gives the player, in some casinos you have had the option to play Surrender, in which you give up half your wager and abandon the hand.

In an effort to spice up the game, a number of variations have been added to Blackjack over the years, both in live casinos and on the Internet. Here’s what you may encounter when looking for Blackjack action on the Internet

Blackjack Switch is one variation of Blackjack that you will find online. You play two hands of Blackjack at once, and you have the option to switch your second card from one hand with your second card from the other. So for example if you have 10, 6 in one hand, and 5, 9 in the other, you can switch the 6 and 9 to turn a very weak 16 and 14 into a very powerful 11 and 19. You cannot switch either of the first cards, so if the first hand were 6 10 instead of 10 6, you’d be stuck. You might think this is a great advantage to the player, and it is, so the house has some other rules to balance it out. For one, the dealer will hit on soft 17 (a 17 with an Ace). For another, a Blackjack only pays even money, not 3:2 as in most casinos. Finally, if the dealer draws to 22, he pushes (ties) all bets except Blackjacks. Despite these rules, Blackjack Switch provides an interesting way to play with a low house edge.

Another interesting variation you might find online is Pontoon. In Pontoon, you get 2 to 1 on Blackjack (in this case, naturally, called a Pontoon) as long as the dealer does not also have one. Unlike in Blackjack, if you make a two card 21 after Splitting, it also counts as a Pontoon. You can also get a Five Card Charlie – five cards in your hand without busting. This also pays 2:1 no matter what your point total or the dealer point total is. You can only lose if the dealer also gets a Five Card Charlie. You can double once at any time during a Pontoon hand, no matter how many cards you have, and may continue to hit after you have doubled. That’s the good side. Here’s the bad: The dealer wins all ties. That means if you both get 18, if you both get Pontoons, if you both get Five Card Charlies – you lose.
