Marxism and Literary Criticism

In Marxist Criticism Raymond Williams is described as having,

brought to his readings of literature a proletarian background highly unusual in a Marxist critic, few of whom have had any close acquaintance with hard manual labor. [That] his thought about the industrial revolution is filtered through his personal sense of what alienation from the countryside might have meant to the poets of the generation…Williams found poetry exhibit homologies with elements in the nonasthetic segments of the superstructure or the relations of production in base. (Richter, 560)

Williams ability to look at Marxist Theory from the perspective of the working class shapes much of his interpretation of the value of literature and how literary theory is interpreted in Capitalist and Communist societies.
In “Base and Superstructure in Marxist Cultural Theory” Williams compares the value of literature in contemporary USSR and a capitalist state,
…the Soviet state is much very much sharper in investigating areas where different versions of practice, different meanings and values, are being attempted and expressed. In capitalist practice, if the thing is not making a profit, or if it is not being widely circulated then it can for some time overlooked… (Williams 462)

Here, Williams romanticizes the Soviet Union’s ability to evaluate and appreciate a work for the value it may have to society as opposed to how much money it can make which is the way he describes the value of literature in a capitalist society.

I can understand why the Soviet way of evaluating literature may seem superior to someone from a working class background: if you’re poor and lack the clout and or education of your wealthier writers than you may not get the backing needed to make your book a financial success but if the monetary value of the book is taken off the table then the book can be evaluated equally with anyone else who may have written a book regardless of class or status.

The problem with this way of thinking however is Williams doesn’t take into consideration the USSR or other communists societies penchant for censorship. Books that are deemed dangerous or not fitting communist ideology never have the opportunity to reach the public or be fairly evaluated for its merit or social value. So whether if it is by censorship or lack of profitability literature can find it never reaches its intended audience in either society.

Later in the essay Williams tackles the different ways literary criticism is viewed. Williams is struck at how, “nearly all forms of contemporary critical theory are theories of consumption…” (Williams, 463) or in other words the theories are concerned with how the reader reacts to a particular work, or “what effect does this work have on me?” (Williams, 464) instead of focusing on how the work was produced.

Williams suggests that how a work was produced or the components that go into the production of that work, the relationship between the components and the objects itself, is more important than the affect the object has on a reader.

The components/production view works well with Marxists theory because the production aspect of creating a work would be considered the base and then one could look at how the production of the work plays in the larger society or the superstructure.

Williams ability to look at the work that goes into producing an object is important because it keeps that work in context with where, how and why it was made. Many times when you take a piece of art out of the context of how it was made its value can be lost or not fully appreciated. Marxist Theory, at least Williams interpretation of that theory, allows one to look at the artistic value of a piece of literature or art in general in a way that consumption theory overlooks.

Libra Sign North Node - Your Soul’s Mission and Path to Fulfillment!

The nodes (south and north node) are two points in an astrological chart that possess priceless information about one’s karmic past and soul-destined future.

Calculated by using the birth data of the individual, the nodes symbolize the unique life path that one is on and can answer many questions about his own, as well as his partner’s, inner struggles and desires — answers that can transform not only his relationship but his life.

Since there are twelve signs of the zodiac, there are also twelve unique nodal positions — each pair of nodes (north and south) representing two opposite signs of the zodiac. For instance, a Libra sign north node is paired with an Aries sign south node because they are opposites. And because they are opposites, they create a clear picture of the dualistic struggle that resides within the Libra north node/Aries south node individual.

Often, the individual is unaware of the war taking place inside, a situation that could go on for years. As time passes he is dumfounded by his inability to progress in life - professionally, emotionally, and spiritually. He doesn’t understand why he keeps repeating the same mistakes over and over again and continues to dwell on the past as he desperately dreams of the future.

All of us have our own set of visible (and invisible) struggles to work through — obstacles that the nodes of the moon can help us isolate and resolve while simultaneously freeing us to move forward on our destined path.

We all know that knowledge is power…and that’s why I offer a bit of it to you…to give you the strength and courage you need to not only live, but thrive.

This week I’d like to begin with a brief overview of the Libra Sign North Node/Aries Sign South Node position.

To start, let’s take a look at some keywords. These words describe the polarity between these two opposing signs and can offer you a glimpse of the soul journey that the individual with this nodal position is on.

Just remember that the south node represents the comfortable but not necessarily healthy habits within your personality - patterns that have accumulated over lifetimes that now need to be acknowledged and released.

The north node, on the other hand, represents your soul’s potential - the direction of the future…the behavioral habits that will lead you to greater happiness and the kind of life that you will find fulfilling.

Here are a few Aries South Node traits that should be put to rest, sort of speak, if the individual with this nodal position is to live an emotionally rich life:

Domineering, tactless, defying, brash, arrogant, uncooperative, self-absorbed, selfish, arrogant, hot-headed, unreliable.

Here are a few Libra North Node traits that the individual might at first find foreign but eventually will need to acquire if he is to connect to his true soul potential and live the life he was meant to live:

Balanced, just, diplomatic, refined, cooperative, fair-minded, social, charming, pleasing, peace-promoting, mediating, harmonious.

The journey from an Aries sign south node to a Libra sign north node will not be easy. But then again, neither is anything else in life that’s worth doing.

Obstacles are simply strategically placed hurdles meant to remind us of our inner strength and hidden needs. Therefore, as long as the Libra sign north node individual remembers that his soul is creating the kind of life he needs in order to evolve as a spiritual individual, he will make it through the transformation just fine.

The following are a few hurdles that he must overcome in order to bring a sense of harmony and balance into his life;

• He must learn to control his ego

• He must understand the importance of self-sacrifice

• He must learn the lessons of cooperation

• He must realize that, in this lifetime, his powerful energy is meant to help those that surround him, not him.

• He must force himself to listen

• He must stop concentrating on winning and instead focus on sharing

• He must stop agonizing over the unfairness of the world; why other people receive what he, himself wants yet doesn’t get

• He must accept that his current life’s soul path is all about selfless giving

The word “must” is a strong word. I realize that. But it is an appropriate word to use when speaking about the needs of the soul.

For if the Libra sign north individual fails to learn any or all of the lessons mentioned above, he might just find himself living a lonely, empty, and unfulfilling existence.

The north node path is offering the Libra sign soul an opportunity to gain wisdom, strength, and freedom. But it is up to him to choose whether to accept the gift.

Having said all that, it might not be such a bad idea for the Libra sign north node individual to surround himself with people and and symbolism that can support his journey.

By encircling himself with people who understand him and symbols that exude the Libra sign energy, he gains the support needed to follow his soul mission and ultimately, his path to fulfillment.

Now, if you’re reading this article and it’s your mate that has the Libra sign north node, and you do that for your mate, well…that’s just about the greatest gift that you could ever give him/or her.

Why? Well, because there’s nothing like the feeling one gets when he realizes that he has found someone who really gets him — a true friend…lover…and the irreplaceable soul companion he’s been searching for his entire life.

…that soul companion who is you!

Have an adventurous journey my friend!

So You Want to be a DJ

There is glitter and glamor, music and dancing. Maybe even your name up in lights on the marque. But at the end of your DJ party, it’s time to do the real work. Which is a lead in to this article on why Disc Jockey’s deserve and earn every cent they make. It’s what’s behind the scene that counts and a four hour job can mean many more hours of hard work and a lot less money per hour as the end result.

So many times It has been said by friends, family or future customers “That is an awful lot of money for only four hours work”. Yes indeed, I am just getting rich quick for doing nothing but playing some music. It gets under your skin sometimes. If only the truth were known (and if you could get anyone to listen to you), a four hour night would be a sweet dream Indeed.

If you have been a successful DJ for awhile, I am not going to be telling you anything new. If you have considering becoming a professional DJ then I have a few things for you to ponder. If you plan on hiring a DJ please read on.

You buy some equipment to get you going, a good chunk of change, but a good DJ also has backup gear to fall back on in case of an emergency (now it’s more than a few bucks). It takes a lot of 4 hour jobs to pay for it. You need to advertise, promote yourself and do a lot of legwork visiting clubs, bars and maybe a few afternoons at some wedding promotion events (you pay for a X booth). You would like to drive a nice sports car but your stuck with that 15 passenger van, not to mention that it gets 12 miles to the gallon.. Every week you jog down to the local record store and buy that much needed CD for $16.95. You know the one that only has one good song that you will ever use. But some guy just has to hear that song the next time you play (then multiply that by 50 people who want a different song). Got to please your fans. A good library of music can set you back a few hundred or thousands of dollars.

You make that appointment to meet with your clients and sign the contract. If your into beat or scratch mixing you spend a bit of time just practicing your art. The weekend comes and your out in the heat or cold (I live in New England) packing your gear in the van. With any luck it’s a fairly local gig that you can drive to in about an hour, sometimes it’s 3 hours both ways. You will unpack, setup, test the equipment and wait. Because if your a good DJ, then you arrive at the gig with plenty of time to spare. Time that could be used to fix a problem that might have happened but with luck did not or time to make sure your all setup before the guests start arriving. If all goes well, you have got time to wait (bring a book).

So here comes the four hour gig. You play your best music but you also put up with the people who are drunk, the people who request songs but do not know the name of the song or the artist who sang it (you must be a mind reader) and then there are the people who just want you to play some music that you know for sure would just kill the festivities (they won’t listen to reason).

Finally it’s pay time. Too bad the work is not over. Time to pack up, load the van, drive it home, unpack the van and get to bed. Maybe it’s 4:00 in the morning and you have got another gig that night. Maybe all your friends were having a great party (wish you were here)while you was out just playing your music. If your in demand, you have not had a weekend off all year. If you have a day job then you find yourself working a seven day week. Your four hour job can end up taking up to 10 or 12 hours to do. But hey, I just got a big load of cash for only playing music for four hours. The heck with my social life. I am a DJ and I got lots of money (and deep in debt, plus van repair bills) to prove it.

I found this book intriguing and adventurous. I love the conflict and appreciated the flaws in the characters..yet something still bothered. Bella! Once agin she was whiny and co-dependent on Edward. The obseesion is disgusting…merely overwhelming. I was glad to see she admitted that she was in love with Jacob. I proved that she cared for SOMEONE besides him. Sometimes I love Edward and sometimes I hare him. after Bella forgave Edward too easily for leaving her I became annoyed at Bella and then Edward became controlling which pushed me off the deep end. He wouldn’t let her visit Jacob at first. HELLO!!! THAT BOY/MAN WAS THERE WHEN YOU WEREN’T!!! He has no right to tell her what to do. I think him maing decisions for her has turned out sourly as we can all see. By the end of the book I loved Jacob, just like I’d enjoyed him in the last book. He just seems better for Bella. They have this deep connection and it’s just WAY more realistic. Someone else said this in their review but I would rather cuddle to a warm loving guy than a cold stone. Well enough of my ranting…overall it was a great book!

I enjoyed all the books in the Twilight Saga. These books are great reading for all ages. It’s too bad they’re in the teen section and adults don’t typically shop there!

Connecticut State Scottish Festival In Goshen

Connecticut doesn?t have an annual state fair as it participates yearly in the Eastern States Exposition which is made up of the six New England States, but that is another article. This article focuses on the Connecticut Scottish Festival held in the town of Goshen every October. Are you ready for some Scottish Games?

Visitors should be, since the festival organized each year by the St. Andrew?s Society is focused on the celebration of Scottish culture and heritage. The Society uses money from the festival and other events to donate to charities here and in Scotland and provide scholarships to students looking to study Scottish Heritage. Come up to Goshen Fairgrounds and if you find you?re lost listen for the sounds of the bagpipes perpetually playing during the fair. Learn about the heritage of Scottish Clans by visiting their tents at the fair. If you think you might have some Scottish ancestry head over the to the tent of the Connecticut Society of Genealogists to learn how you can trace your family roots.

Bagpipe playing is a competition here, deciding who can play the best pipes and probably play the longest without passing out! Celtic music is the theme at this festival. Visitors can find the stage packed with folksy singers and fast-paced drumming bands, both. Don?t forget about the Dance Exhibition where visitors can get an up close look at the fancy footed dance that is unique to the Celtic culture.

On sale at the festival will be a range of Scottish foods, you just might find Haggish, though you may prefer the Bannocks (Scottish biscuits) or the Scotch Meat Pies if you happen to find a vender selling them at the year?s fair you are attending. You can also find a range of items imported from Scotland. This may include cloth, clothing, ales, beers and cheeses.

Buy Extra Memory For Your Camera

I’ll wager that most of you have, at some time, got into the situation where your memory card is full. This usually manifests itself when you are about to take (an important) image. It’s frustrating and highly annoying.

The next step is to run through the images on your card in order to find the best ones to delete. As you peer at the LCD screen you attempt to decide which images are right for removal to the trash – blurred images, red eyes, poor composition.

But it can be difficult. If you are like me, you never really want to get rid of anything, at least not until you have had a good look at it. But if you don’t, you will miss the next important image, and the next ….

The answer is cheap and simple: buy extra cards. Digital memory cards represent good value for money and by shopping around you can get them even cheaper than in the main shops. They can hold hundreds of images and smaller ones (128 or 256Mb size) are so cheap that it’s worth having a few handy in your bag for emergencies.

If any of you have used film, you will know how expensive it can be to keep replacing film in the camera and only being able to take,A at most, 36 images. With memory cards, you can hold 80, 160 or 300 images depending on the size of your card.

Get an extra card (or two) today.

iPod Music Downloads – Download iPod Music to Your Heart’s Content

Downloading iPod music always brings thrill to users whenever they manage to find the tune they are searching for. Just not long ago, when radio was the only free source of music, people would stay tuned to their radio or portable receiver. Then CDs came along, followed by music MP3s. It is apparent that the MP3 player has invaded almost all the modern homes of America. Chances are you would find one MP3 player or more specifically an iPod in the homes since it is the most popular MP3 player. More than 21 million iPods were sold in just the last quarter of 2006 alone, boosted by the Christmas sales. Having a nice gadget with such enhanced capacity to hold hundreds to even thousands of songs and music is not enough. You need to know how and where to get hold of unlimited iPod music downloads in order to do justice to your iPod.

When people think of iPod music downloads, the first place they would think of is iTunes. If you do a quick review, you would discover that they have a wide selection of over 3.5 million songs, movies and over 200 TV shows, over 20,000 audio books, games etc. Prices range from $0.99 for a music track, and movies retail at $9.99 per movie, while TV show sells at $1.99 per episode. Frankly, that’s quite a large database of iPod media files and there are old fans who stick with it since that’s probably the very first site that they knew and got their first iPod music downloads.

However, there are others who feel that it is ridiculously expensive if they want to beef up a private stash of music and songs with tons of iPod music downloads. Naturally, they would switch to downloading iPod music at free download sites. Why should anyone bother to download iPod music that comes with a price tag each time you do so? People quickly figured this out and as a result, huge demand for free iPod music downloads ensued. More new download sites copying this free concept pop up.

But there are some problems with downloading iPod music at these free download sites. These poorly maintained download sites would expose your computer system to malware such as viruses, adware and spyware. In exchange for downloading iPod music for free, you are obliged to view those pop-up advertisements, or commercial ads. Needless to say, this would badly affect your PC’s performance such as speed and memory and its functionality. Imagine the kind of trouble you would be in should your PC crash on you and wipe out all your important files and documents. The reformatting, reinstallation and so on so forth is something most people would love to avoid.

Business owners saw the loopholes and pitfalls in these free iPod music downloads sites. In meeting the ever-increasing demand for cheap music downloads for iPod, new membership sites that offer lifetime access to millions of iPod music files, music videos, and other media files like business audio books, TV shows and movies came into the music scene. Instead of a pay-per-download fee structure, they go for a one-time fee based concept. Various download sites charge a different fee but it is generally in the low range of $40. The music community, especially iPod users has welcomed such a refreshing change. Music enthusiasts can now access to as many iPod music downloads as they wish, without expensive charges under an environment safe from malware attacks.

Read my blog to find out how it is possible to access to millions of iPod music downloads and get the latest tips and reviews of top iPod music sites.

How To Get A Tribal Tattoo Design And A Modern Tattoo Design Together

A tribal tattoo can range from a stand alone generic design to something much more complex and symbolic. But what if one doesn’t want to be limited to the tribal design, and wants to incorporate other more modern designs. Here is a way to have a tribal tattoo while syncing it up with another design.

-Incorporating the a tribal tattoo with modern design.

This involves incorporating both modern design with tribal design, but doing so in a tasteful way. This reflects both the current day while also representing the past. Basically a tattoo design is used, for instance a particular object of some sort, then a tribal tattoo design is incorporated around it, alongside it, or preferably in a way where “equal billing” is given to both the object and picture of tribal tattoo. Many of the weaker versions of this simply have tribal “arms” sticking out from the object. Here the tribal tattoo is essentially demoted to that of acting as “flames”. Stronger versions of incorporating tribal with modern involve utilizing the tribal tattoo in a way that works alongside the object in some manner, visually or symbolically. It usually will not only strengthen the object, but also be able to hold it’s own.

A tribal tattoo may seem an easy choice on the surface, but if you are into finding something unique with meaning, and incorporating it with an existing or new tat, then its worth researching to find the right design that will fit. The right tribal tattoo combined with your favorite modern tattoo is worth much research into not only design but meaning as well. What does it symbolize or stand for? How could that relate to the modern design? Choosing a tribal tattoo and modern tattoo together as one could make for the ideal tattoo.

Want to see unique tribal tattoo designs? Go to tattoo-book.info tattoo-book.info for an amazing selection of both modern and tribal tattoo’s. Here you’ll find the right combination of both as well as hundreds of other designs to choose from tattoo-book.info tattoo-book.info

    Enchanting.

It sounds like Lisa Gerrard (Dead Can Dance and more recent work with Peter Bourke) is doing the vocals on several of these cuts.

When sound technology meets tribal poetry immerged in the lush green world of the rainforest, haunting but majestuous atmospheres unravel themselves from "The Lost World". Undoubtedly, this is the richiest CD from Michael Stearns for its acoustic form and musical fabric. Stearns is an expert at interweaving complex synthetizer layers and natural soundscapes. "The Lost World Theme" is probably the most profound experience of this sonic journey into the heart of the rainforest. The laments of Keri Rusthoï’s voice amidst the rainforest symphony conveys a sharp sadness, a longing for Eden. In a few words, this superb synergy between Pemon chants, on-site acoustics and synthetizer harmonics communicate a deeper yearning: a Unity with a World of an elusive beauty. If you like mystery, melancholy, poetry, textural soundscapes and ominous atmospheres, you are ready for "The Lost World". Your heart may stay there…

    Review date : 1998-06-15
Arguably the best CD yet from this vastly under appreciated artist, this incredible disc takes us on a actual journey to the center of the rain forest. Using real world sounds recorded on location mixed with state of the art recording methods, the sonic quality is unmatched. Musically, this is textured music - a mind trip for those with an active imagination. The sound is so subtle it brings your home theater alive with the electricity of jungle life. Please consider this as audio art and not your average popular music recording. Try and buy.
