Big Brother 7 - The Big Buzz Factor

The voting has finally closed- Houseguests can relax for a few moments- relaxed as one could get wondering if their summer will be filled with every moment of their live recorded in the Big Brother House, or if they will continue on with their current lives a little more separate from the public spectacle the others will be in. I have to wonder, how much promoting did each candidate actually have to do? How much influence is CBS going to have? And finally, what are the thoughts of how voting took Place?

Chicken George was by far the biggest spectacle of them all. Parading around in a Chicken Suit this man did all he could to capture attention. But for a guy who organized a rally against Big Brother while he was in the house, trying to get all the houseguests to walk out- could a chicken suit be washing away that dignity? Or is it just a gimmick? Have people voted for him? Or maybe he was perhaps trying to capture CBS’s attention rather then America’s.

Online communities have been bursting with interviews conducted with candidates, forums discussing voting, and live chats featuring housguests. The effort of campaigning could easily reside in the online communities as the ones in the forums are the ones that most likely would vote. Several candidates made personal vote banners, set up home pages, and made their presence known on the web.

VOTING- In this writers opinion- the voting system lacked some really important conditions that Internet savvy people exploited. CBS allowed you to vote as many times as you wanted- no limits per day nor did they put up codes you need to type in in order to vote. Thus, programmers-a-plenty built auto click programs inflating the votes to unbelievable numbers. Because of this, I don’t think the results will be very representative of “America’s Choice.” But perhaps CBS was only trying to create the “buzz” factor for the show- and make candidates spend time and energy promoting it. How much of the voting results was CBS really going to listen to?

The bottom line is CBS wants drama- so CBS is going to get it… whether or not it be the public or the houseguests that create it- Big Brother 7 has Big Buzz…already…

Criminal Stars

Thievery is alive and well in Hollywood. The glamorization of crime invariably tickles the curiosity of the public. Criminals have been portrayed as exciting, daring and cunning tantamount to hero status. They are the risk takers who should not be completely judged upon their criminal expression but rather looked at as individuals with some merit. They are cast sympathetically as their relationships are examined and ultimately lend credence to the justification, in their minds, of the criminal choices they have made. But worst of all, they are often shown as being ‘cool’, even as they hurdle towards the death of their freedom.

Take, for example, the jewelry or art thief. Movies like the Italian Job, the Score and Ocean’s Eleven display criminals as generally model citizens, other than when they are committing crimes. There may be such criminals but are they so suave in their real lives? Are they seemingly morally upright in their relationships with others? Are they really just good guys who happen to commit crimes? In real life the majority of criminals are not suave, cool or sympathetic figures. They are cutthroat, ruthless and to a degree, sociopathic. Mob figures are the best example of the paradox between the glamorization of criminal life and reality of criminal behavior.

All agree that the Soprano’s, a show about mob life in New Jersey, is a great show. The production value is high, the actors are skilled and the plot lines are well conceived. People get whacked, money gets laundered and criminals get promoted for good work. Yet, in order for the audience to tune in every week they must connect with the characters. Hence, the boss of the family, Tony Soprano is shown as a father, a husband and as attempting to improve his relationships with the outside world by visiting a therapist. This is a ploy to create sympathy for a ruthless murdering crime boss. And it works, as the Sopranos is a hit. What then are the real criminals doing?

True mob figures don’t give a damn about the outside world. Their loyalty lies with their crime families. They lie, cheat and murder for riches and would stomp on the average person, literally, to further their gains. A true jewelry thief is usually a two bit criminal who robs the local family owned jewelry store, as can be verified by FBI criminal statistics. Real criminal life is fraught with betrayal, pain and stints in prison. Most criminals are caught at some point with over 13 million arrests made in the US in 2005 alone, according to the FBI.

The business side of Hollywood is reactionary in nature. The glamorization of criminal life is partly in response to a demand by the public. Interest in stylized underworld figures comes from a public perhaps bored with their average daily existence. The idea that there are people who survive in a world where they ignore the law, fascinates us. But when the glamour is shaken off, and the dust clears, there is only an empty fancy suit left, where a thief once stood.

The Best Time to Start Learning a Musical Instrument

The best time to start learning a musical instrument is when you have an overwhelming desire to do so. It matters not Whether you have tried before and failed; whether you are young or old; what season it is; or where in the world you might happen to be.

There is only one pre-requisite: A love of music.

There is no denying that learning to play a musical instrument takes a lot of hard work. The mantra is “practice, practice, practice!” and there are no shortcuts, regardless of what some of the ‘miracle teaching methods’ might have us believe in their advertising. But with time the hard work and practice become pleasurable as we discover the joy of commanding an instrument to make those first musical sounds. Gradually, as more and more competence with an instrument is developed a fulfillment and enjoyment like no other is experienced - great rewards indeed for the time and effort expended!

Some would argue that the best time to learn is when one is young; after all a child learns more quickly. That might be true, but nothing is more certain than that forcing a child to do anything, including learning a musical instrument, is a futile venture that can build a great resentment in future years. Furthermore, a child could view the enforced sessions as a punishment and lose enjoyment of music as a result - not the wanted outcome at all.

Others may claim to be past the time of learning and quote old cliches such as; “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks”. This is of course nonsense - learning in whatever form, whether it is academic or for pleasure, is a lifetime pursuit and age has nothing whatsoever to do with it.

So the best time to learn is neither in the spring, summer, autumn or winter of a person’s life; but when there is a curiosity and a willingness to experiment with the sounds a musical instrument can make. But above all; when a person is absolutely determined and willing and can enjoy working hard for the thrill of being able to play.

In short; you can become a musician at any time if you truly believe you can.

Top 5 Reasons Why Live Music Is Always Better Than A Dj

OK - so I am biased. I’ve spent hours and hours practicing my instruments and I’ve spent thousands of dollars on my education. I could come up with 20 Reasons. But I’ll start with 5.

1.CLASSIER: The right band adds a certain amount of class to any event. A pianist playing a Grand Piano in a tuxedo of any event adds romance and dignity. A DJ behind a record player never will be able to produce that effect.

When you hire a live band or musician, you are telling your customers and friends, I am a class act.

2.VERSATILITY: DJS are limited by their recorded product and tempos on the recordings.

Musicians will adjust to their surroundings. If the dance floor is packed, a band can keep the song going and will not be limited to the length of the original recording.

A musician can also change his tempo to the activities in a room. When I see a romantic couple dancing to Frank Sinatra tune, I will frequently add that spark that I feel for my wife.

Granted, a DJ may have a repertoire that is only limited by the amount of CDs they buy. But a good musician knows thousands of songs.

I know I have probably forgotten more songs than I learned over the years. You will love watching the band ‘fake’ their way through a tune they haven’t played in years.

That kind of spontaneity is only possible when you use live music instead of a DJ. Which brings us to Reason #3.

3.PEOPLE LOVE TO SEE OTHER PEOPLE SCREW UP: Let’s face it. Musicians are human beings. We make mistakes like everybody else. Why is American Idol so popular? Because we all want to see someone fail. And succeed!

Your friends and customers will love to try and stump the band when we’re playing at your Sales Event or Product Rollout. (Watch their amazement when we succeed.)

?Music is a Manifestation of Emotion. The feeling must always override the Technique? - Jan Hammer (Keyboards for Mahavishnu Orchestra and Jeff Beck)

4.INTIMACY: There is something very intimate about seeing someone play an instrument and create music on the spot. Music is magical. It is almost surreal. Can a DJ play with emotion? Intimacy?

People love to watch my hands as I play the piano. It is as if the music appears out of nowhere. When a musician performs for you, it feels like they are creating just for you — right on the spot. Magical!

5.INTERACTION: Not only will a great entertainer adjust his performance to a live audience. A live band will interact with each other onstage. A DJ is only one person. Surely a DJ can and will interact with his audience. But a good musician will interact so much better.

Also, just imagine the added dimension a live band will bring to your next Corporate Event. A live band will interact with your audience AND the musicians in the band. If you’ve ever had the pleasure of listening to a group of musicians ‘hang out’ after the gig, you know what I am saying is true. A DJ has only an audience for interaction.

Music is truly the universal language. It transcends any barrier — geographic, cultural or economic. Hiring the right Musical Act will enhance your ability to reach your customers and clients.

Playing Online Bingo - Is it for Everyone?

The answer to the above question is YES!

For years, Bingo has been played by the old and the young. It could be played for fun, prizes and, of course, money. It could also be played as a learning tool for the young.

A Bit of Bingo History
Bingo is a type of lottery game. A series of numbers are drawn to determine the winner. What is so easy is that bingo is not an exact science and a great deal of luck.

A Bit of How to Play Bingo
You receive a bingo card that has 25 squares on it. Each letter of the word “BINGO” signifies one of the five columns. Usually numbers 1 through 75 are randomly put into the twenty-five squares. A bingo caller draws a number or uses a bingo cage to spin to get a numbered bingo ball and calls out the number. You then mark off each number called that matches one on your card. A bingo pattern is announced at the beginning of each game. If you cover all the squares that make up the announced pattern, then you have a Bingo!

A Bit of Bingo Odds
To increase odds of winning, play with a smaller crowd. Makes sense, right? The smaller the number you play with, the fewer the amount of people playing against you to win, the better your chances are of winning.

Online Bingo
To win prizes or money, Bingo had been played in bingo halls. It has become a growing gambling source. The new and improved growing trend is Playing Online Bingo. Online bingo can be played day or night. Online bingo can be played anywhere that you have access to a computer that is connected to the internet.

A Bit of Benefits from Online Bingo
You can meet all sorts of people from all walks of life and from all over the country. You can chat with them in the bingo chat rooms and get to know them. You can make excellent friends. Here there will be people with the same passion as you to play bingo.

A Large Bit of Benefits from Online Bingo
The bingo jackpots have been increasing too. I have seen as much as $13,000 in jackpots at various games. The need to win is great and the possibilities of winning that jackpot are excellent. The cost of playing is extremely minimal too. Most of the online bingo games will match your deposits, or “double your money.” You can play as low as a nickel ($.05) a game.

The majority of bingo games will have all sorts of specials going on. They change regularly which keeps the games fresh. There are multiple ways of increasing your money and getting that chance to win the jackpot.

Now if you ask me, betting a nickel and winning $9,000 is a very, very good bang for your buck!

Wildlife Photography

Wildlife photography, it’s no longer taking photographs like a documentary photographer. Now days it is serious business, your photos must have impact, and a strong environmental message. As well it should be consistent with a motion. Going beyond, images that will grab our attention just remember beauty, cuteness, and the motions they evoke, the behavior they show, and most importantly the environmental relationship they portray.

Consider The Light Direction:

Most wildlife photographers are diligent about getting out early and staying late to experience that special light when the sun is low on the horizon. However, they often don’t put nearly as much effort in choosing the light direction, I see many choosing front lighting NOT good think about it. Front lighting is clichéd. So make your subject look unique, try using light from different direction, backlit situations works well with translucent body part and a rim light you got an almost mystical look.

High Contrast Scenes:

Combination of sunlight and shade can work in your favor. So take advantage of your film’s ability to handle high-contrast situations. When the sunlight falls on your subject, and the rest of the scene is in shaded. So you can focus on the subject, just meter the highlights and let the shadows fall, play with the scenes.

Use flash:

Flash Photography, Many times the subject is cooperative, but the light is ugly. Maybe there’s too much contrast and the pattern of light and shadow is impossible to work with. or flat light from cloudy and what light there is it may look drab. Fill –Flash can light up your shadows in a high-contrast scene, it will surely bring out the color of your subject on an overcast day. Don’t overlook this too tool in your quest for strong wildlife images.

Shoot Tight:

Wildlife shoots must be tight, all to often subject are way out in no man’s lands, these photographs are not enough to show expression or deal of your subjust.by shooting tight we are grabbing the viewer’s interest, and the nice thing about tight shoots they are more artistically. Beware shooting tight requires a powerful lens and a tolerant towards your subject, never hurt or stress your subject, they safety comes first.

Treating Your Subject As An Equal:

Any wildlife photo implies a relationship between photographer and subject. Looking down on the subject puts it in a position of lesser importance, like a pet or servant. Since we want viewers to see our subjects as special. Don’t shoot down on them the subject should be on the same level as the viewfinder. So, sore knees and dirty pants often are the marking of the seasonal wildlife photographer. Capturing animal behavior is perhaps the most obvious and often the easiest method of talking photos that are more than snapshots.

More Action:

Animal behavior is perhaps the most obvious but and some action and you got more then a snapshot. So with simple action like walking or yawning won’t get huge response unless some other thing going on in the shot. Like pups playing (Active behaviors) Please remember there is no silver bullet for capturing behavior. It takes a lot of time with the subject, so hang in there.

What’s special about your subject?

Well, in general people are not to inform about nor are they experts in very many animals.
Your job as a photogrher is to show them why they are so special. Perhaps it’s a unique physical feature of the animal-eys, tongue, colors, toes.since most of these features aren’t very large, so highlight them usually means getting in close. Your subject features could well be its environment. Maybe like making a snack out of some blossoms and so on. The trick is to balance the image and grad the viewer’s attention to the subject and their environment where it is bad or good, you need to bring it home. Some time people get upset when other people feel or attribute human emotion to animals. To them I say lighten up and get a life. Beside recent studies have shown that many species experience the same emotions as you and me. So if you can a photo of an animal with a discernible emotion or mood, like a mother deer caring for her fawn (and the hunters will still kill them) or bees working together and so on you will make a great connected feeling and the viewer will be immersed in your photo and many just have a change of heart as the way they look at the world of nature.

How’s the weather?

People always are interested in the weather, so always include it in the image. This will tell people what the weather was like and they will linger a little longer on the image. Winter images are always good for this. For one thing a image with a warm blood animal’s breath turns to a steams in cold temperatures, nothing adds life to a image then like a creature’s breath. Flowers are always a good choice to indicate spring or summer and fall will you get the idea.

Show How The Animals Feels:

Some scientists get upset when people attribute human emotions to animals. Well, these scientist need to lighten up and get a life. Besides, recent studies have shown that many species experience some of the same emotions as you and me. It is very important to show the subject(s) motions, this will add great impact towards your photo and the viewer will be immersed in your photographic.

It Does Not Rain in My World!

I was blessed to own and manage a rather large bicycle and lawnmower shop for twenty eight years. I hired quiet a few high school and college students over the years. Some of my students were from a local community college. A division of that school was a rehabilitation college. Some of the students had physical or mental limitations.

My lawnmower mechanic was Mr. Blake. He was raised in a black orphanage until he was eighteen years of age. The lady in charge of the orphanage called him into her office and said, “You are too old to still be here. We did our best, since you were a small baby to get a couple to adopt you. You are now old enough to go out into the world and make your own living. We have a job for you at a local bakery. We have found a one bed room apartment for you also.”

She went on to say, “You have been taught to managed money and live on your own.” Mr. Blake told me that everyday he would line up with all the other kids and couples would come by to choose a child for adoption. He said he would go and comb his hair neat, hoping to be adopted. It never did happen!

Now he was on his own. He met his future wife and married. He raised five children. Four graduated from college. Mr. Blake owned three rental properties. Years later the lady that raised Mr. Lionel Blake in the orphanage came to live with Mr. Blake and his wife until she passed away.

After working twenty five years in the bakery, he wanted to try something new. He enrolled at the community college and studied small engine repair. Mr. Blake worked at another lawnmower shop for five years. One day he answered my add in the classified for a lawnmower mechanic.

Mr. Blake was born a business person. I was a sales person and a customer service person. I felt that I was blessed to have Mr. Blake help me to become more of a business person. Mr. Blake was tough love.

One day, the placement officer from the community college brought over a student that was always in trouble with the law. He asked me if I would give the young student a job repairing bicycles to keep him out of trouble. I hire the young man. The young man was wearing a ankle bracelet because he was on probation. He was very smart and a good worker. I could not understand how this student could get into trouble so many times with the law.

Mr. Blake would tell me, “Mike watch that new student you just hired, I think that kid is up to no good.” I could not believe what Mr. Blake was telling me. Mr. Blake said that every word out of that kid’s mouth is a lie.

One day Mr. Blake was coming into the shop with his tool box. The young student was mouthing off to the other young bicycle mechanics. Mr. Blake put down his tool box, grab the student with both of his hands by the collar of his shirt and pushed him up against the wall. The student was in shock. Mr. Blake begins telling him, “I want to know what is your problem? This man is giving you a chance to make something of yourself and keep out of jail and you stand here with all of your lies.”

The young student frightened said, “I was adopted!” To that Mr. Blake replied, “I was not adopted!” He then let go of the student and told him to follow him to the back of the shop through the service door.

Total silence fell in the area where the other students were.
Two hours later Mr. Blake and the student came back up front.
You would have thought that young man had been dipped into holy water. He was not the same person.

His parents came to the shop one day when the young man was in school to thank me for what I had done. I told them that I had nothing to do with this. I directed them to the lawnmower service department to speak with Mr. Lionel Blake.

When they came back up front, Mr. Blake and the parents were smiling. Mr. Blake said, “He is going to be alright, he just had to have his head screwed on right.”

After the parents left, I told Mr. Blake that he should open a clinic.
He said, “Mike, you know it does not rain in my world!”

The book is kind of small with small print and contains 20 speeches. Most of the orators are well known to include MLK Jr and Malcolm X, but only one entry per speaker. I was surprised to see a speech by Obama, albeit a lessor known commencement address. The 2004 Democratic Convention speech would have probably been a good addition. It was a very inexpensive book so a good value.

I love love love this book!!!! It is easy to read and very inspirational. I recommend that everyone read this book- from young to old and all in between!!!

It was wonderful to read these great speeches by great people. The book is something to be cherised by all. It was easy reading and the price is right. I will probably purchase more of this book to give to friends and family. Barack Obama is the man of the year, so everyone wants to read his speech.

Review date : 2008-07-25
I expected this book to be inspiring, since I have collected quotes from these speakers…. It lived up to the promise and then some. There is such a compelling glimpse into history and moments of greatness, probably seen best in hindsight.

I would love to see this book used in schools!
