The History of Caribbean Stud Poker

Caribbean Stud Poker is a variant of poker, a card game with a long and mysterious history. The word ‘poker’ has a tangled history all of its own; it comes from the French word ‘poque’, which itself is a variant on the German word ‘pochen’, which simply means “to knock”.

Nobody really knows how or where poker began; some say that its origins lie in a 16th century Persian card game, whilst others believe that it originated in Europe at the turn of the 19th century. One thing we can be sure of is that poker was brought to North America by French explorers, and that it was originally played in Louisiana. Many accounts name New Orleans of 1830 as the place and time where modern-day poker was first played. After being initially established, the game quickly spread from Louisiana and soon became a favorite in the West.

While we don’t know who specifically invented Caribbean Stud Poker, the tropical version of the game, we do know that it originated on the island of Aruba. This popular tourist destination is just off the coast of Venezuela, and boasts a population of only 100,000. Caribbean Stud Poker is based on the rules of five-card stud poker, with the major difference being that players bet against the house, rather than other players.

Caribbean Stud Poker was initially played in the Holiday Inn Hotel & Casino in 1988, where the turquoise ocean and beaches of white sand provided a fitting motive for its exotic name. Now known as the Excelsior Casino, this location is still widely popular with tourists and forms the basis of a thriving community. It has recently been the focus of attention once more, with the World Poker Tour being held there in September 2005.

In the late 1980s, Caribbean Stud Poker spread throughout the islands of the Caribbean, and it was also offered in casinos on cruise ships in the area. Over the next few years it received an ever-growing reputation until, inevitably, it arrived in Las Vegas in 1992.

The gambling gurus in Nevada realized that the game wasn’t quite rewarding enough to the player, so they added a progressive jackpot as a sweetener. Their plan worked, and the popularity of the game skyrocketed throughout North America and Europe. Nowadays, it’s hard to find a casino in the world that doesn’t offer Caribbean Stud Poker, and with the arrival of Internet gambling, everybody has a chance to play.

Moral Values In Society Flourish As Bicentennial Of Abolition Of Human Trafficking Is Commemorated

February marked the 200th anniversary of laws that disallowed human trafficking. In conjunction with this bicentennial the film Amazing Grace, based on the life of antislavery pioneer William Wilberforce, is slated to open in theaters nationwide in February 2007. The film highlights moral values in society and focuses on how Wilberforce who, as a member of Parliament, navigated the world of 18th Century backroom politics to end the slave trade in the British Empire.

Although slavery was abolished throughout the British Empire in 1833-34, and in the United States in 1865, and today no national government officially allows the ownership of another human being, the practice is still widespread throughout most of the world.

In a compelling article that touches on ethics and current events, contributor Bill Butler raises the question - why, if two hundred years ago Briton and the United States outlawed human trafficking, are there more than 800,000 to 900,000 victims trafficked globally each year? According to the government 17,500 to 18,500 are trafficked into the United States. Women and children comprise the largest group of victims.

“When the average person hears the term slavery, he or she probably thinks of an era long gone, yet the shocking truth is that the slave trade is alive and well, said Butler. “An estimated 27 million struggle in slavelike conditions.”

President of Washington, D.C.-based Free the Slaves Kevin Bales is also a professor of sociology at Roehampton University in London, and considered the world’s leading expert on contemporary slavery. His book Disposable People: New Slavery in the Global Economy has become a recognized manual on the subject.

In his interview about the causes of modern slavery with Butler, Bales offers his thoughts, as he has dedicated himself to combat what he refers to as “the terrible frozen face of ignorance and icy apathy of the public to the lot of an estimated 27 million slaves in the world.”

Butler identifies several organizations that are working on solutions to human trafficking. Compassionate, decent-minded people everywhere must stand behind those organized efforts to defeat this type of evil, but it will take more than human endeavor and government legislation to change the hearts of those who selfishly inflict so much suffering on the poor, the disadvantaged and the vulnerable.

The problem is a deep-seated spiritual one that has plagued human nature from the beginning of time and remains a current social issue problem. “Humans have always exploited other humans,” stated Butler. “Human nature is part of the problem, but the way people view their responsibility to any and all other human beings is a spiritual matter.”

Author, Kristin Gabriel, writes articles on current issues in society and culture for Vision Media. More information about these and other topics can be found at vision.org vision.org

The article is part of a special report running on vision.org www.vision.org this week that analyzes the current social issues surrounding the global human trafficking problem. The report features interviews with several experts on modern slavery and human trafficking as well as victims of the scourge. Butler interview one such victim, Beatrice Fernando, originally from Sri Lanka but now living in the United States. The 23-year-old woman was taken as a slave from her home to Lebanon, where her life became so unbearable that she leapt for freedom from a fourth-story Beirut balcony. Her long road of escape and return to a normal role in society was not an easy one. However she counts herself one of the lucky ones, because she understands that the vast majority is not so fortunate to escape.

The Keeper of the Dungeon [Opiel: The Gatekeeper] A Poem

The Dark, damp, deep dungeons
(Underneath the castle grounds)
Where freedom has no sunlight
This dark palace,
Is where the cadaverous dungeon keeper resides?
Where death filters its way into, this dungeon’s stonewalls:
Here, upon your arrival, hate—with mortar mixed tortures
Fester about; infinite, horrid decaying bones separated from flesh
Paralyzed human spirits—live…(the Keeper’s clientele)
Live in a lifetime of hideous silence.
Here, all cease to speak, blinded and stripped
Raiment’s, just muffled echoes—
In these Dark, damp, deep dungeons
(Underneath the castle grounds)
Where freedom has no sunlight
Where death filters its way into this dungeon’s stonewalls.
Here all will forget ones original name, after time
And all carry their own chains [no crosses allowed]:
Contemplate propositions once made—now too late.

It was this demonic beast, Opiel: keeper of the dungeon
(Once keeper of Hell’s gates)
That broke the silence seized the arms of each human being
Grabbed some by the nostrils
Dragged them disquietingly
Across the stone floors, in utter darkness;
In silence, darkness, solitude, who could stop him?
Motionless they all stood…!

“You are all my guests,” he laughed
His echo was like a pack of rats.
(No future, only madness.)

Dungeon walls speak: blank, dark secrets:
They have unconquerable spirits,
Impending footsteps, no fatigue,
Cold and slimy bodies; these walls have feet,
Instinctively they groan, wiggle about,
As if their thighs are blinking eyes
They do not know defeat!

One guest once told me:
They thought it was a dream
But when they awoke, it was reality!
“Ghosts have their dungeons of madness also…”
(I quote: the keeper of the gates);
Some are let loose to created havoc
Others like reptiles, sleep in these dark dungeons
Night after night after night; so says the Keeper:
“Revenge is my birthright.”

I love Indiana Jones. Though it seems ridiculous that at 65 Ford can do all those stunts, especially at his age, Shia does a great job and so does Karen.
Number 4 is NO WHERE as good as the other 3 but it was still enjoyable fun to watch these stars go on yet another adventure.
But does anyone know if this box set contains the special editions recently released?

This set contains the four cinematic adventures of Indiana Jones. Raiders is a classic piece of cinema. A brilliantly directed action adventure film paying homage to adventure serials of the 30s. Temple of Doom pays similar homage, but takes Indy into horror and fantasy territory. Doom is extremely polished and lavish, personally I love it equally with Raiders. Last Crusade brings back the popular elements of Raiders, along with Sean Connery as his father. There is some brilliant dialogue in this film and banter between them. It’s probably the most family oriented of the original three. Then we have Crystal Skull, the new instalment. Personally I enjoyed it and think it is a worthy entry into the sage of Indiana Jones. There are some over the top moments, but like Temple of Doom before it, the film really pushes the fantasy elements of the action scenes. Marion Ravenwood is back and well, I won’t spoil it. It’s great to see Indy back after 20 years. Buy this set, you will watch all the films over and over again!

Cheesy fun. That’s all it is. If you’re expecting realism or drama or the Godfather, you’re barking up the wrong tree. If you’re looking for 8 hours of cheesy fun, best accompanied by a bottle of vodka, then look no further.

And if you’re wondering about the fourth movie, don’t worry. The ending very clearly emphasizes that Shia is NOT replacing Harrison, and there will only be one Indy :)

The only big reason that I can see against buying this boxset is as follows: will this be the last one? I doubt it. Personally, I’m waiting for the fifteen-disc, six-movie box to be released… and you know it’ll happen :)

People seem to keep talking about Indy 4, but this all four. And all are great. SEE THEM!

Review date : 2008-10-03
This movie was awesome! He still has the touch to make action and comedy blend together. Sure, he’s alot older now than when he did the last crusade, but that’s the beauty of it. I think he’s in great shape for his age and did alot of his own stunts in it. Shia, I could do without. I think he’s a bit overblown. Lucas/Spielberg/Ford are talking about doing another one but even they admit they would have to hurry because Ford is getting any younger to do these sort of things. I love the way it ends. Lucas has already said Shia will NOT replace Ford. And the end proves it if you pay attention to it. It’s masterfull the way they let the fans know there is and always will be one Indy!!

The Trouble With TV

There are two things you quickly notice about not watching TV. The first is that everyone with a telly watches it far more than they admit. The second is that it gives thousands of hours of good quality entertainment for astonishingly little cost. What critics have long maintained is that TV destroys the mind, but I?ve now got to admit that people who haven?t got a TV become restless, edgy and ultimately obsessed with trivia.

I tried keeping a diary of the experiment: ?Day 1. Life is so much better without TV. I?m doing so much more, and I feel a better person?? and so on?The second week was just dull. I felt slightly numb and dimly aware of everyone else was having fun while I couldn?t allow myself to do so. Going out with friends also got problematic. I now realize that at least two-thirds of conversations begin:?Hey! Did you see? the other night?? Of course I didn?t! People started regarding me as some sort of sad case.

The lowest points of the month were two England-Scotland football matches, for which I joined Britain?s long-distance lorry drivers and shop staff listening to the radio. Whilst I was sure life went on as normal in Wales, life everywhere else in mainland Britain came to a complete halt that day. I know it because I stared out of the window watching the rest of the population hurrying home to watch the matches.

Then total disaster struck. I got flu and had to spend a day at home. Despite the thrill of comfort food and reading the newspaper in bed with the central heating on, there seemed no point in having a day off sick if you couldn?t watch TV. I was back at work the next day.

The last few days were like being a small child before Christmas: each minute took twice as long as the preceding one. Eventually, midnight crept around, and, like a drowning man finding dry land, I leapt in front of the set and grabbed the remote control as if it was pure gold! I had reached an oasis of televisual delights. And, of course, you?ve guessed it! There was nothing interesting on!

Online Poker Jobs - The Basics Of Texas Hold’em

If you would like an online poker job its really important you understand how poker works. Poker comes in a variety of different flavours, the most popular online and one of the easiest to pick up is Texas Hold’em. It is relatively easy to pick up the rules, and it will give you that extra knowledge you would need for an online poker job.

Texas Hold em poker usually works in the following ways.

• Betting can work in a variety of different ways on different websites and different poker tables. However common across all sites is the notion of blinds. These are bets which the two players to the left of the dealer have to make regardless of how good they believe their cards are. Often the player immediately to the left makes the minimum bet for that round known as the big blind. The next player makes a smaller bet which they would have to increase if they wanted to play the hand.

• Now the dealer shuffles up a normal deck of cards if playing in real life, online the cards are virtually shuffled. Then each player is dealt two cards face down, if you are playing online you will be able to see these cards but no other players can. In poker circles these cards are called pocket cards or your hole.

• Now there is a round of betting called the pre-flop which begins to the left of the person with the small blinds. Here everyone on the table has three options. Match the bet where they agree to add the big blind. Raise where they bet more money than the big blind. Or fold, where you bet no money but lose your chance to win the hand

• After everyone on the table has had a chance to bet, the dealer discards the top card of the deck, a virtual online dealer does this automatically. This is called a burn card some tables ignore this rule. The idea behind the burn card is that it prevents cheating as someone may have seen the card at the top of the pack.

• Three cards are then revealed to everyone playing. If you were playing in real life these cards would be dealt face up on the table. These three cards are known as the flop. These cards that are dealt face up are communal and can be used by anyone on the table to create their best five cards in combination with their pocket cards.

• After these three cards have been dealt another round of betting takes place. This works in much the same way as the betting pre-flop and goes clockwise from the dealer.

• Now another card is burnt and not used and one more card is dealt face up. There are four cards on the table and two in each player’s hand. This card is called the turn. Following the turning of the card another round of betting takes place.

• Another Final card is burned and the final card is dealt face up called the river. There our now five cards on the table and two in their pocket. Each player has to choose there best five cards from the seven available. The last round of betting is now made.

• Now each player takes it in turn to reveal their cards in the same order as betting is made. The player with the best five cards wins.
Now you understand the basic of Poker you could be perfect for that online casino job.

Sports Betting Analysis: Colts over Broncos and Bears over 49ers

It’s no secret that there are many “smart money” players make money with sports betting every week. How? Many use sports handicapping services to find the games that have the best chance of winning. The following are two examples taken directly from my sports handicapping service at David James Sports.

San Francisco 49ers at Chicago Bears -16

Wow… this a lot of points to be giving up in an NFL game. Of course when you start to look at the two teams, you can understand why the 49ers are getting so many points. With the exception of the Monday Night near-disaster in Arizona against the Cardinals, the Bears have been totally dominating all season long. In four of the Bears wins they outscored their opponents 137-20.

Think about that stat for one second. These are NFL teams we’re talking about, not some over-powered small college teams playing against powerhouses. 137-20 over 16 quarters of football, which included last year’s NFC champs, the Seattle Seahawks. With pro games even more weight is put on the here and now as opposed to historical stats.

The here and now says that the Bears have the potential to be a team for the ages. The only reason they came close to losing in Arizona was because their offense turned the ball over 6 times. And yet the Bears still found a way to win. On the other hand, the 49ers are just another lousy football team. They somehow managed to beat St. Louis and Oakland this season, but they’ve given up over 40 points per game in their four losses. This is the key stat of this game. The 49ers defense is likely to let Chicago score in the mid, to high 30’s this game.

With the line being at 16 points, the question becomes, can the 49ers score 20 points against the Bears defense? I highly doubt it. Forget records against the spread, etc., in this game. What this game comes down to is the 49ers are overwhelmingly mismatched on both sides of the ball, and their going into a very amped up, very hostile environment. The Bears are going to be trying to pour it on in front of their home fans.

I look for the Bears to crush the 49ers in this one, 37-10.

As you can see by this example, a good sports handicapper can cut through all the nonsense and get right to what’s most important about a game. Namely, the Bears have a much superior team and will be able to destroy the 49ers. The actual final score in this game was 41-10.

The second game was the top match-up of the day. You can see when you read this analysis that the professional sports handicapper is again able to zero in on what’s most important about the game:

Indianapolis Cots 3 at Denver Broncos

This game is the marquis match-up of the week. This game could very well be a preview of the AFC Championship game… which is why we’re going with the Colts in this one. Let me explain. Tony Dungy is a great coach, and a great man.

However, he’s not quite so great in the playoffs. Why? One, his teams can beat up on lesser teams during the regular season because they have more talent, but when playing opponents who are more evenly matched, it’s a lot harder to go up and down the field -especially in the playoffs. But the second reason is that Dungy is not quite as savvy as some of the more experienced coaches… for example Mike Shanahan.

What that translates to is that the Colts are going to pull out all stops to win this game, even if it means showing the Broncos some twists and wrinkles that they should be saving for their likely match-up in the playoffs. More importantly, Indy knows that the pressure is on them to win the Super Bowl again. They know that a loss to Denver might mean coming back to Denver in a blizzard in January to get to the Super Bowl.

Peyton Manning does NOT want to play in another blizzard in the playoffs and be embarrassed again. Plus, just looking at the two teams, this game really is a mismatch. Denver hasn’t scored more than 17 points in a game this season. Actually, they only scored 17 points TWICE this season. All their other games were under 13.

Denver’s defense is playing great, but in my opinion, is over-rated. Their last three games were against Cleveland, Oakland, and Baltimore. Look back to how the Steelers destroyed their secondary in the AFC Championship game last January. Manning is going to do the same. With all this in mind, in my opinion it’s crazy that the Colts are actually GETTING 3 points in this game.

Like the Kansas City game, I think the Colts chance of winning this game outright is at least 50/50. With the added three points, the odds of winning this bet go up dramatically. Look for the Colts to win going away, 28-13.

What actually happened in this game is very close to what was predicted, with the Colts winning by 3 points. The Broncos, knowing that they’ll be playing Indy again in the playoffs, stuck to their soft zone defense all game. This allowed Indy to score every time they had the ball, but it allowed to Broncos to keep some tricks up their sleeve for their next game.

Soap (Season 3) DVD Review

Nominated for 17 Emmys in its short four-year run, Soap premiered in the Fall of 1977 as one of the most controversial shows in American television history (and all before a single episode ever aired). The show was opposed by many groups who thought its subject matter would be too mature for a prime-time audience. But Soap never overstepped its bounds, and the show became an instant smash hit with its brilliant and satirical spoofs of classic daytime programming. Sporting an all-star cast and talented producers, the show spawned successful spin-off Benson in 1979, a series that launched Robert Guillaume’s career to a whole new level…

Set in suburban Connecticut, Soap follows the lives of two sisters - Jessica Tate (Katherine Helmond), a wealthy yet dim elitist, and Mary Campbell (Cathryn Damon), a housewife in a more traditional blue-collar atmosphere. But regardless of their social station in life, neither woman manages to escape the scandal and intrigue surrounding a typical soap opera family. Jessica’s daughter Corrine (Diana Canova) is smitten with a priest, yet they are both having an affair with the same tennis pro. Meanwhile, Jessica and her husband Chester (Robert Mandan) incessantly cheat on one another. As for the other side of the family, Mary’s husband Burt (Richard Mulligan) is certifiably insane, her son Danny (Ted Wass) is a mobster, stepson Jodie (Billy Crystal) is an out-of-the-closet homosexual, and all of them are caught up in a family filled with promiscuous infidelities and quite possibly murder! Throw in the insubordinate and sarcastic Tate butler Benson (Guillaume), and Soap holds its own as one of the funniest sitcoms in TV history…

The Soap (Season 3) DVD features a number of hilarious episodes including the season premiere in which Burt awakens in the hull of a spaceship. Eunice asks Dutch to strike a deal with the feds, and Benson organizes a posse to rescue Billy from the Sunnies while an alien clone of Burt takes the real Burt’s place… Other notable episodes from Season 3 include Episode 52 in which the real Burt and his alien clone finally confront one another, and Episode 69 in which, with a guilty Chester by her bedside, Jessica dies, all while Jodie gives an impassioned courtroom defense of his right to be an openly gay single parent…
