Dancing With The Stars: Season 3, Episode 2

Last night on ABC’s Dancing with the Stars, Edyta Sliwinska and Joey Lawrence delivered the best performance of the night. Light on his feet and graceful, Joey is a natural dancer. His childhood tap dancing experience has helped him tremendously, particularly in the quickstep where being light, swift and spritely on one’s feet is key.

Karina Smirnoff and Mario Lopez were my second favorite couple of the evening. Like Joey, Mario benefits in the quickstep from being smooth and light on his feet. It is clear to any trained dancer’s eye that he, too, has had childhood dance experience. A true adult non-dancer, no matter how naturally talented he or she may be, does not have the same leg extensions, grace, speed, turn out, flexilibility and clean lines that Mario has. He may not have had formal training, but honestly, from my perspective and personal experience as a dancer, any kind of dance experience early on in life helps, whether it is tap, break dancing or even gymnastics.

What a pity Karina and Mario did not stick to the dance’s standards and remain in closed position longer for the quickstep. Unlike foxtrot or waltz, quickstep is strictly an International Style dance; in competition, the couples do not open up and separate as they do in American Style Smooth. Furthermore, spicing up their dance number with Latin flavor hurt them in the end. Quickstep is supposed to be glamorous, elegant and lively, not hot and sexy. I still love them, though; they’re always a pleasure to watch.

Other than Louis van Amstel and Monique Coleman who burned up the dance floor with their fantastic mambo choreography and their newly sizzling chemistry, the other couples failed to impress me. Vivica A. Fox, Shanna Moakler and Sara Evans appeared heavy and sluggish next to the energy-filled hip action and nimble footwork of their respective professional partners.

Jerry Springer was his usual awkward and slow self - the man himself is convinced he won’t make it far and I don’t blame him. As far as Emitt Smith goes, I can’t see what the hype was all about. Despite of the infusion of pizzazz into the open work, his actual quickstep (in closed position) looked chunky and lacked dynamism.

Who should go this week? Jerry. Give the old man some rest.

Who’s likely to end up going? Shanna. Former beauty queen is a total bore.

Films - March Of The Wooden Soldiers

People could have said that casting Laurel and Hardy in the 1934 classic “March Of The Wooden Soldiers”, based on the Victor Herbert operetta “Babes In Toyland”, was simply a PR stunt to get them involved in the movie only to show off their comic talents and nothing more. Certainly how could they add anything to the plot? Well, people who said that couldn’t be more wrong. Laurel and Hardy added more to this movie than most people realize as they were ultimately the ones who saved Toyland. More on how later.

The plot is pretty simple. The evil Silas Barnaby, played magnificently by Henry Brandon, wants the hand of Little Bo Peep. She wants nothing to do with this wretched excuse for a human being. So, to get even with her, he goes to her home and threatens mother Peep, the little old lady who lived in a shoe, with eviction if she didn’t pay the mortgage, which he happened to own. When Hardy finds out about this he offers to pay the mortgage for her but discovers he’s broke. He tells her not to worry, that he would get the money from the toymaker. Well, things don’t go as well as he predicted, having botched the order for toy soldiers and making them too big for kids to play with and he and Laurel get fired.

Well, the wedding has to go on and it does, except with Laurel standing in for Bo Peep. When Barnaby discovers this, of course not until after the mortgage is torn up, he vows to get even. He does. He frames Tom Tom for the kidnapping of one of the three little pigs. Tom Tom is then sentenced to Bogie Land. But Laurel and Hardy soon discover that Barnaby was the one who stole the pig and framed Tom Tom. The chase through Bogeyland now begins.

Eventually, the chase leads back to Toyland where Barnaby makes his final attack along with the Bogeymen. In an effort to defeat them once and for all, Laurel and Hardy activate, you got it, the toy soldiers. The soldiers march out into the town and do battle with Barnaby and the Bogeymen, driving them all back to Bogeyland.

The movie was not only well done but featured some of the most beautiful music and singing. Highlights included “Don’t Cry Bo Peep”, “Toyland” and “Go To Sleep” among others. The acting was superb, especially Brandon who played Barnaby. Brandon was actually a very young man in his 20s when the movie. But great makeup and his magnificent performance had everyone believing that he was much older. Brandon stole the movie from everyone. He was pure genius in a role that most people overlook when discussing the greatest parts of all time.

Every year around Thanksgiving or Christmas this classic film is shown. It has been shown every year for at least 40 years. And through all this time it remains as great as it was the first time anybody saw it as a young child. Truly one of the greatest holiday movies ever made.

Concerned About Photo Printing Services?

Many new digital camera owners have concerns when it comes to the subject of using photo printing services. They are used to the habitual process of taking film to the store to get it developed and waiting till it is finished, then picking it up afterwards. After reading the novel-like instructions manuals that come with a new digital camera, new owners may not want to invest any more time into sifting through tons of information on the web just to find out the facts of photo printing services. However, once you actually get started, the process of finding good information on photo printing services, as well as facts about them is easy.

Questions may often arise before actually searching for information about photo printing services such as “How much will the prints cost?” and “Will they actually look half-ways decent?” These questions are often easily answered with a quick Internet search, but if you want to skip the Internet search and just hear the answer, well then, that is fine too. Prints from a digital photo printing service will normally range anywhere from 19¢ per print to 29¢ per print. And yes they will look pretty good as well, probably even as good photos taken with film cameras.

Sometimes the answers to these questions will vary though, depending upon which photo printing service is used. It is important to realize that although some companies may offer an attractive price package for printing services, they may also deliver low quality pictures. On the other side of the coin, the pricier printing services may cost a bit more but make superior prints in comparison to the competition. Other factors such as having a user-friendly website for customers may come into play as well, especially for extremely busy people. If you’re concerned with more than just the quality and price elements of a photo printing service, then you may have to do a little more research in order to find what you’re seeking. In this case, make sure to look for company reviews as they are a valuable asset to any digital camera owner.

Very well done and I hated to see it end. Whoever the writers were did their historical homework, and took very little editorial license. Highly recommended.

Once again, George Lucas has thoroughly entertained and intrigued us with his use of combining history and adventure in Young Indy’s life in a serious and humorous way. We also enjoyed all the many extras that give us the background on the historical figures we encounter along with Indy. Fact and/or fiction — a very nice way to take on an adventure and possibly learn a little history as well.

I fell in love with the first volume of this DVD release - if only for the special features. (See my review under that title.) The re-edited stories on Volume one were confusing but the 10-½ hours (!) of NEW documentaries blew me away! George Lucas and Rick McCallum put their money where there mouth was (and Paramount went out on a limb by putting 10 DVDS in one set) and it shows. The documentaries are well researched and use the experts in the field.

I’m not a big War Years fan so Volume 2 was just okay for me but - again - high quality documentaries were attached.

Then came this volume. First, I headed to the documentaries - Jazz - Louis Armstrong - Ben Hecht - The Algonquin Round table. Each was better than the next with super footage in crisp quality prints and all the experts. Then I decided to watch the series episodes on the Blues and Hollywood. I’m as big music fan so I gave them a shot. WOW! Was I impressed! The Mystery of The Blues episode is loaded with great music - yes, full musical numbers. And each of the three women that Indy falls for is more gorgeous than the next. And how many films feature clarinetist Sidney Bechet as it’s lead character for 90 minutes? (You even get a bit of Harrison Ford at beginning and end!). The last episode on early Hollywood was great too with lots of cool stunt work and an over-the-top performance by the actor playing eccentric Director Eric von Stroheim.

I was really sorry to hear that the series ended with this episode. I’m hooked!

All the volumes belong in every school and public library as a learning tool. Each of the 25-35 minute docs is a new learning tool for adults as well as older children. I certainly give this volume FIVE STARS! And a BIG thanks to Lucas, McCallum and Paramount!

George Lucas should definitely produce more Young Indiana Jones episodes. The episodes of volume three are all terrific and represent a wide range of events, genre, and most important, allow further character development of Indiana Jones. Indiana Jones gets to teach some history while endearing himself to us as a good man with a keen mind and open heart facing his own life lessons. New episodes might finally explain how this trusting young man he created grew to be a cynical adult of the feature films. It’s this satisfied viewer’s hope that Sean Patrick Flanery finally gets the credit he deserves for his many exquisite performances throughout this series. The episode in Italy with the young Ernie Hemingway is as good a "buddy movie" as Hope and Crosby, Newman and Redford, or any other Hollywood team has ever created.

Rubbish. I got caught up in the hype for Indy 4, so I brought these dvds when they were on special. I watched about 30 mins for disc 1 before I turned it off. I had not seen the series before and it was not what I thought it would be.

How To Avoid Phony Music Management Agencies

As a professional writer and occasional music manager, I often encounter bands and solo musicians that work very hard to attract attention from music management agencies. Unfortunately, a legion of grifters uses the raw desire for success against many smart, talented music professionals. If a representative from a music management agency contacts you, use these three guidelines to determine whether they’re on the level:

1. Real music management agencies will never, ever ask you for money up front. Managers make commission on their clients’ earnings, and experienced managers understand that an unknown artist doesn’t have much money. By taking on developmental clients, music management agencies cultivate both business and goodwill that they hope will pay off when an artist enjoys a modest breakthrough.

On the other hand, fly-by-night music management agencies run by rip-off artists know that there are plenty of talented people who are willing to believe that a fee of a few hundred dollars will get them attention from record labels and from radio stations. While it’s legitimate for a very small music management agency to ask for a small retainer to cover overhead expenses, this fee should be negotiated in advance and should be billed after the agency has done some work on a client’s behalf.

2. Real music management agencies can point you in the direction of successful clients, or can admit that they’re still so new that they haven’t had any breakout stars on their roster. Believe it or not, some of the most influential music managers of the last five decades had little or no experience in the music business. They just had the drive and the stamina to do great work for equally talented clients.

Meanwhile, you can tell most rip-off music management agencies by looking at their web sites or at their offices. If your potential managers seem to have collected hundreds of grip and grin photographs of themselves with some major stars, ask whether the manager did any actual work with that artist, or whether the just love to snap photos at industry meet and greet events. Many Nashville con artists stuff their offices full of artist photos to deliberately overwhelm the senses ? and the judgment ? of potential victims.

3. Real music management agencies handle business at the office, not at the gig. Professional music managers understand that live shows are the best possible marketing opportunities for bands to grow their audience and sell their merchandise. After all, the more money a band makes, the more money a music manager makes. Professional managers will, most often, grab some contact information from a band member or from the merchandise table, so they can make contact during business hours.

Unfortunately, many bands get taken in by the rip-off music manager that trades on the adrenaline rush after a live set. These scam artists often slide up to the stage right after a set, buying drinks (or even supplying drugs) to their targets. They play off the notion that many musicians love to party, and that signing with their (bogus) music management agency can lead to plenty more party nights. Before long, the so-called manager has snagged a hefty retainer, which they usually use to fund parties with their new marks.

Remember, professional music management agencies recruit new clients based on measurable results, not just based on a band’s performance at one club night or at one music conference. Just as sporting talent scouts keep an eye on potential pro athletes throughout their high school and college careers, real music management agencies may be watching your band grow from a distance. In the meantime, rely on your friends, your family, and your street team to provide the foundation you need to attract the right professional manager for your career.

Joe Taylor Jr. has written four books about the music business for aspiring musicians, including Music Management for the Rest of Us. You can learn more about finding professional music management agencies at: http://www.musicmanagementfortherestofus.com/agencies/

Mzone Report: Using VPIP in the Early Stages of a Poker Tournament

If you have been calculating your mzone in online poker tournaments, you may have noticed that the early stages are not exactly a time for closely monitoring your mzone, but rather your opponent’s VPIP. The reason for this is simple – everyone, is green MZoned.

So due to the limited range of mzones in early play, I find it is more pertinent to follow your opponent’s VPIP closer than the other factors. Herein is where you will get a good indication of the kind of player you are up against. Later on in the tournament when the mzone is the most critical indicator, you can weigh in the players profile as well because you have been monitoring the VPIP. Keep in mind that VPIP is one of main factors in determining your opponent’s overall profile but actually becomes less and less relevant as the tournament progresses.

If your opponent’s VPIP is less than 25%, that should be considered relatively tight, while including some position play with chemistry hands. You can likely put this player down as a Sklansky type drone that waits for quality cards and hopes to double up early, or will wait until middle rounds to try and chip up. This type of player usually understands the game well, but has a low tolerance for risk, and relies on cards.

On the other end of the scale, if your opponent’s VPIP is over 40%, you have a loose player on your table. A lot of players go into a holdem tournament with the strategy of building a stack early, or getting out early. These players usually fall into that mindset, while others are simply ring table calling stations and cannot adjust to mzonereport.com tournament strategy. In this group as well you will have to account for players who simply don’t know what they are doing. You need to have strong hands against players in this group. While you will usually have the right inclination of being ahead of one of these players, if you let your stack ride knowing you are ahead, you will often find yourself the victim of a bad beat, and it’s off to the rail.

Now when your opponent is between these two indicators, less than 35% and more than 25% it is a little harder to categorize them because in the early going, a normally tight player could be in this group by virtue of distribution of better hands, and possibly more opportunities in position. You may have to look at other indicators to help you here, like their stack size for instance. I find though, that after a discernable amount of hands, most players are not in this category, so it just may take a little more time before you can pinpoint someone here.

Buying Theater Tickets Online from a Ticket Broker

Most of us have stood in line at a theater at some point in our lives waiting to buy tickets for a show we are desperate to see only to be disappointed when we are informed that they have sold out. Or perhaps we have planned a last minute trip and would like to catch a show when we are in town. The good news is that although the box office may have no tickets left it does not mean that they are not obtainable

There are many reasons we may want to pick up tickets at the last moment. If you are going away for a weekend trip; you have an important client that you have to entertain; you have a date that you want to impress. Or what if you want the best tickets in the house, but all they have left are seats at the back of the theater? Whatever the reason for the last minute scramble, when you want to buy tickets at the last moment you should be able to find them online at a ticket brokers.

Online ticket brokers can offer you the best seats and tickets for sold out shows. Ticket brokers buy tickets and then resell them. In other words they do the standing in line for you. Therefore you do have to pay them for this service. However if you really want the tickets then it is worth it. Ticket brokers often provide a higher level of service than found at traditional ticket distributors.

Brokers are not scalpers. Scalpers are generally individuals, and not legal businesses, who sell tickets on the day of the event, at the venue, for whatever price they can negotiate at the time. Ticket brokers are legal businesses, do not negotiate prices and adhere to a code of ethics. They sell only legitimate tickets and post refund and cancellation policies.

Respectable ticket brokers have ticket selections for a variety of events. When choosing a broker make sure that they are fully compliant with the law, and licensed in the state that they operate in if it is required. Take a look at their website and make sure you feel comfortable with the broker and that they are operating a legitimate business. Explore the delivery options for your tickets or whether they offer you the option of e-tickets. Look for a ticket broker that will provide you with top notch customer service. Shop around before deciding on the ticket broker that is right for you.

Although you may have left it to the last minute it does not mean that it is too late to obtain the tickets for the event of your choice. Do your research and find a ticket broker that you are comfortable with. These brokers know that good service brings the customer back for more. Therefore you should expect the highest levels of service from your ticket broker.

Black Blood, in Jeremiah’s Vines - A Poem and an Article

Black Blood, in Jeremiah’s Vines
[A Dream Poem]

And I heard the crackling of wood, and I noticed the Lord God had made men of wood, and fire came from his mouth.

Then the wind poured its grief upon us—over our sins; and I heard the words for the seventh time, “Go to the mountains!”

Foolish people of this land pray and understand—for He cometh! Thereof, toss yourself to thy knees, for the roar of rebellious men will bleed: black blood, through the vines of Jeremiah.
