Pac-10 Season Preview - Arizona

We go to the desert for my number six team in the PAC-10, the University of Arizona Wildcats. It turns out the media and I have a lot in common, as the PAC-10 media took the Wildcats to finish sixth in the PAC as well. We may both be way wrong.

Mike Stoops is in his third year with Arizona. Stoops was an integral part of the recent Oklahoma resurgence, as one of their offensive coordinators since 1999. Arizona brought him on board thinking that they would see immediate dividends, and it hasn’t really happened yet, although the team had high hopes for this season.

Arizona needs a win this Saturday in order to avoid starting conference play 0-3. The Wildcats lost to USC, mustering only a field goal, and were blasted by three quick second-quarter Washington Husky touchdowns in a 21-10 loss. I still think this club can be a decent one, with sophomore QB Willie Tuitama a dropback passer who can move a little bit in the pocket. But for now, they are having all kinds of issues on offense, and their solid defense just can’t do it all.

One of the big surprises of NFL training camp was RB Mike Bell, who nearly won the starting job with the Broncos. Arizona fans knew all about Bell from his time toting the rock in college, so it wasn’t much of a surprise to them, but the loss of Bell has been a big one for the Wildcats. Even with junior RB Chris Jennings averaging 5.8 ypc this season, the loss of Bell is still a big one, a little bigger than I realized.

Stoops has done a very good job of recruiting at Arizona, though. He’s brought in newcomers like Tuitama and sophomore WR Mike Thomas, and expanded the role of experienced offensive players like all-purpose WR Syndric Steptoe. In doing so, Stoops has stocked the cupboard for the future. But it’s not an overnight thing to improve your offense, especially when you are known as a defensive-minded coach.

Speaking of defense, Stoops has some improved players on the other side of the ball. Unlike last season, when safety Darrell Brooks led the team in tackles with 48 after five games, this year two linebackers are atop the heap in the tackles race. For the Wildcats, even though the won-lost record isn’t spectacular, that’s a good sign that their defense isn’t surrendering the big play.

The special teams aren’t bad either, with K/P Nick Folk handling the punting and kicking. Folk, who was recruited as a kicker, has turned out to be a better punter, averaging over 45 yards per kick this season. I’m not that confident in him in a close game, as he’s just 8 of 12 between 30 and 39 yards in his career, but he’s a solid, experienced kicker who is better than most.

In short, while this might not be the season for the Wildcats, Mike Stoops is improving the program, and will have it back in prominence within two seasons.

Florida State/Miami ACC Showdown

The Miami Hurricanes went down at Florida State last season in a surprisingly low scoring 7-10 game. It looked hopeful that the tides would turn in 2006 with the game being played down in Miami, but the suspensions of several key players including tailback Tyrone Moss and receiver Ryan Moore may have made this one tighter than many originally expected, though Miami is still favored by 3 points in Monday night’s matchup.

Miami Hurricanes 2005 record: 9-3
Returning starters offense: 5 defense: 6

The Offense: In 2005, Miami’s offense was under much scrutiny as the Hurricanes turned in their lowest point production since 1997. Larry Coker is looking for new offensive coordinator Rich Olson to revitalize Miami’s attack. This will be quite the daunting task in the opener with their starting tailback out against last season’s 14th ranked defense, but the Seminoles lost 6 of their top 7 tacklers and although they’ll be a solid defensive unit, they won’t be at their best in game 1. QB Kyle Wright, who led the ACC in touchdown passes last season, should improve along with his talented but underachieving receiving core of Lance Leggett, Darnell Jenkins, and Ryan Moore. Miami also has one of the best tight ends in the country again this year in Greg Olsen. Despite the suspensions, the Hurricanes will be able to put more than 7 points on the board against the Seminoles defense.

The Defense: It was Miami’s defense which made most of the big plays last season and it will be the defense again in 2006 with far fewer worries than the offense. Just how good were the ‘canes’ defense last season? They had the 4th best total “D” in the nation and they were number 1 against the pass. The secondary should be strong once again with the return of safeties Brandon Meriweather and Kenny Phillips. Miami’s secondary will be a major test early on for the young Drew Weatherford who has created plenty of hype for himself by breaking Phillip Rivers’ ACC Freshman record for TD’s and yards. With the problems the Seminoles had on the ground last season, you should expect to see plenty of Miami’s strength, the secondary, against Florida State’s, the passing attack, on Monday night. I’ll give the edge to the Miami defense initially, but if Miami’s offense has trouble moving the football, a tired defense could give up some late game strikes to Weatherford.

Florida State Seminoles 2005 record: 8-5

Retruning starters offense: 5 defense: 5

The Offense: If Miami’s defense does have a weakness, it’s against the run as they return just 2 defensive lineman starters and an undersized linebacker core. However, if the Seminoles have a weakness, it’s running the football. Florida State ranked 109th out of 117 Division I-A programs last year with just 94 yards per game on the ground. If the ‘noles can’t do a better job on the ground in this one the ‘canes will be able to sit back and make it difficult for Weatherford to find any open targets. The running game was a huge emphasis all spring and I expect it to be improved with senior Lorenzo Booker and sophomore Antoine Smith’s 2-back attack. Any improvement at all will free up Weatherford for an even bigger year in 2006.

The Defense: The Seminoles produce NFL talent on the defensive side of the ball year after year as their players always make up one of the fastest defenses in the country. Replacing All-ACC players and All-Americans normally hasn’t been too difficult of a task for defensive coordinator Mickey Andrews, but he’s had to replace 6 of FSU’s top 7 tacklers from last season including the best linebackers in the conference in Sims and Nicholson. The ‘noles will build around senior linebacker Buster Davis who was the second leading tackler last season with 91 stops. The Seminoles defense will be young, but they will be talented and lightning fast. I anticipate them sticking with a Hurricanes offense, which won’t be a well-oiled machine with missing players and a new offensive coordinator.

Inexperience could overshadow the talent of Florida State’s youngsters on the defensive side of the ball allowing Miami to capitalize with crossing patterns and motion sets on offense. On the other side of the coin, if Miami isn’t prepared for an improved running attack out of Florida State, the Hurricanes could lose their projected ACC title in week 1.

Ultimately, Jimmy Boyd knows which team will be more prepared in the season’s first big matchup and you’ll be able to cash in big by picking up one of our premium packages on Monday Night’s game.

View from the Stage: Beale Street Blues Had a Baby

Hey everybody… g-man here; just walked in the door from Memphis. I had a great time.

Wonderful place Memphis is. Good bar-b-q, brews, and blues. It’s a place to lay down some style between the downcast Mississippi Delta, and the smoky Chicago bars that I love so much. The heart and sole of Memphis is Beale Street–there are no words to describe Beale–you’ve got to play it like a tune. That’s what I did; I played there in a place called Dan McGuinness–it was way cool.

Beale Street is a world unto itself; Bourbon Street has nothing on Beale. Nothing. (Ok there are those chicks who’ve earned their beads but that’s it…Ok, Ok, and there’s those 190 proof slushy drinks too–but that’s it.). There’s every bit as much creativity, craziness, public boozing, and street artisans running tourist scams as Bourbon Street, but Bourbon can’t touch Beale’s Blues. Beale Street even has it’s own (self proclaimed..) Mayor: Rudy Williams–he plays a hellofa horn at that.

Well you know, I went down there looking for the root of blues, but was amazed to find the birth of rock and roll (and I thought it came from those frail guys from across the big pond). Very cool. Born in the USA–we got Jazz, we got Blues, we got Motown, we got Country, and we got ROCK—slam dunk baby! We got game. Who’s got the BEST music on the planet? Who’s your daddy?

Sun Studio Memphis 1951; a place put on the map by Elvis asserts sole heir to the claim that rock music indeed started in that very spot- - I’m not kidding, there is an electrical tape X on floor where rock started… right… THERE… ROCK STARTED RIGHT…
THERE!

Rock ‘n Roll’s ground zero.

Upstairs at Sun, behind a hand heel smudged glass case is a faded vinyl record by the fictitious band “Jackie Brenston and his Delta Cats”. A 1951 tune called “Rocket 88″ recorded at Sun. This is the very platter that started rock rolling. The rock history book cites that “In 1991, after a great deal of debate, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame recognized this as the first Rock and Roll song ever recorded.” Right there on that freakin’ X! Can you believe it?

My tour guide at Sun (a guy named Eldorado) posed an interesting question: “What makes rock, rock? - - I mean why isn’t this song considered blues?

It’s attitude and feel. This song was about a car–the Oldsmobile “Rocket 88″ just came out and was the fastest car on the road at the time. It was advertised as having a V-8 “Rocket” engine. Fast cars used for chasin’ fast chicks. That’s Rock in a nutshell.

Or perhaps it might help to think of it this way:

The Blues is Depression- - the past.

Rock is anxiety- - the future.

Take a valium and you have Pop Music. It’s that simple.

Different sides of the same coin–you flip. It’s my turn to call it.

German Memories - Germanic Migration from Scandinavia to Southern Europe

While I was narrating the migration of Nagas and other tribes towards the Island, our discussion went back to before the Christian era of Europe where some of the Germanic tribes from Scandinavia were migrating towards the Northern Part of today’s Germany.

The southward movement of Germanic tribes were probably influenced by a deteriorating climate in Scandinavia around 600 BC - 300 BC. The warm and dry climate of southern Scandinavia which was a couple of degrees warmer than today, deteriorated considerably, which not only dramatically changed the flora, but forced people to change their way of living and to leave their settlements.

At around this time, this culture discovered how to extract bog iron from the ore in peat bogs. Their technology for gaining iron ore from local sources may have helped them expand into new territories.

After they learnt new technological advancements, the Germanic tribes Teutons and the Cimbri were moving towards the southern parts of Europe. The Teutons were mentioned as a Germanic tribe in early historical writings by Greek and Roman authors, Strabo and Velleius.

The concept of ‘Germanic’ as a distinct ethnic identity was hinted at by the early Greek geographer Strabo as an adventourous group who dwelt in northern Europe. It was quoted by early chroniclers that “The Germani at noon serve roast meat with milk, and drink their wine undiluted”. The Germanic tribes were each politically independent, under a hereditary king. The kings appear to have claimed descendancy from mythical founders of the tribes.

According to Ptolemy’s map, the Teutons lived on Jutland, whereas Pomponius Mela placed them in Scandinavia.

More than some hundred years before the birth of Christ many of the Teutones, as well as the Cimbri, migrated south and west to the Danube valley, where they encountered the expanding Roman Empire.

In the densely forested north of Europe, there lived more people than could be nourished by the primitive agriculture techniques. The fertile farmlands and pasture grounds of the south and the west were attractive to the Germanic tribes as battling for these areas was far easier than clearing their own forests with iron axes.

The Germanic tribes had been spreading out deeper and deeper into the west and south. At the same time they displaced the Celts up to the Rhine and the Danube, which now would be the borders to Celtic Gaul (today’s France) and to Celtic Rhetia (today’s South Germany and Switzerland).

Astrologers Just Plain Stupid?

We live at an interesting time of scientific knowledge. Scientists say that you cannot gain an advantage over the Casino, since the odds are stacked against you. Scientists also say that Astrology does not seem feasible, since it does not fit in with known scientific laws. However, it is estimated that approximately 100 million people in the world either follow Astrology or see that there is some truth in it.

Are all these people gullible or stupid? Do people just follow something in their millions, century after century, if there is nothing there? Are humans really this fickle, or is it because each of them has had personal experiences or discoveries that have made them see that something very real and valid is going on? Avoid being too fickle yourself when answering this question!

Why this is an interesting time is because of this disparity in scientific and common knowledge. One day, probably in the not-too-distant future, when science has begun to unravel the causes and effects of Astrology in more detail, several areas of life will change form or lose their appeal. Can you imagine a world where Insurance companies would work out your motor vehicle premiums based on how accident-prone your birth-chart was? Or where police would be able to short-list you with regards to having committed a crime on a specific date? Or where employers would first look at your Astrological compatibility with the existing staff-members? Or where mothers would choose the time of their child’s Caesarian birth so as to avoid a Scorpio moon, a Saturn opposition or whatever? Can you imagine a world of Astrological discrimination? Are you beginning to appreciate why Astrology is known as ’secret’ or ‘hidden’ knowledge? Why it is ‘protected’? Why you can argue with someone or spell it out to them until you are blue in the face, and they still won’t see it? They are not thick. They are just excluded.

Astrology is a gift. It ‘forces open’ your Third Eye. Certain aspects in a person’s natal chart, especially to or from Mercury and Uranus, enable (or permit) them to see its truth. For the rest, it is simply blocked. They just don’t get it, or are not interested. They cannot, or may not, take advantage of the influences affecting their lives. Without a doubt, there are times which are favorable for one to undertake various tasks or activities, and times when it is extremely unadvisable to undertake these same activities. The sterile world of scientists, insurance companies, criminal investigators, psychiatrists, and… yes, casinos, is still mostly unaware of these hugely deterministic influences that affect our lives and fortunes.

Thank goodness! Would you rather be one of the first people to take advantage of a gold rush, or only get in when the millions in their hordes were frantically trying to make their fortunes? Be grateful for your your knowledge, your ‘gift’, and things as they stand. Take advantage of esoteric knowledge, before it becomes common knowledge.

Classical Guitar on Fire

The Classical Guitar has the reputation of being a soft, sweet, and gentle instrument. While it deserves this reputation because it is all these things, it is also an instrument capable of tremendous fire and passion. Here is a selection of some fiery and passionate classical guitar pieces that will add power and raw emotion to your repertoire.

None of these pieces are particularly rare. Transcripts and videos of all these pieces can be readily found by doing a web search.

Spanish Guitar pieces

Villa-Lobos Prelude #1 This piece has a great melody, is very Spanish, and has some wonderful chord phrasings that just can’t be found anywhere except in the deepest Spanish guitar pieces. It moves at a great pace, is sometimes slow and easy that burst into some great chord phrasings at a good speed. This piece will transport your audience to Spain.

Leyenda (Asturias) This is a very popular and very powerful Spanish Guitar piece. It is also one of my personal favorites. Although it takes time to learn this piece it is well worth the effort. There are some wonderful bass runs and alternate picking patterns with this piece. It revolves around a wonderful central theme.

Zapateado This is just another awesome Spanish piece that has some great bass lines and some terrific melodic phrasings.

Traditional Classical Pieces

Bolero by Ravel This piece is the ultimate performance piece when it comes to passion. It isn’t a fast piece it is all about the passion. Since the movie 10 with with Bo Derek this piece has come to symbolize passion.

Fuoco by R. Dyens Just a great short piece about a minute. It is not a well-known piece but well worth the effort of learning. It burns bright and fast.

Flight of the Bumblebee by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov – Everybody knows how this piece goes and it is not associated with the Classical guitar but is perfectly suited for the instrument. This piece doesn’t exhibit passion but it does exhibit fire simply by the sheer speed that it is played at.

The Classical Guitar has been called “The Little Symphony” for a reason. It is an instrument of incredible range and reach. And while it is often most associated with pretty melodies it is capable of some very fiery and passionate expressions. As you are building your classical guitar repertoire make sure you select pieces from this whole spectrum of capabilities.

Gaming Winners

Before you plan a trip to Las Vegas or Atlantic City or going on a cruise with legalized Gambling, certain things you must know of, and the most important one being How To Win. Gamble is all about taking a calculated risk, using your skills combined with a strategy and finally one thing that all of us want, Luck.

The first and the foremost thing, quite undeniably is how to play the game. One should know the intricacies of the game, like how the bets are made, rules and winning odds. Watching a couple of games could be a good exercise too, watching the player’s moves and those of the dealers also.
What makes a good gambler? The question has been around for years. Skills needed in the games are different, while slot machines are popular for requiring absolutely no sills, yet some strategies can help you in deciding as to which games to play and how much to bet.

A bit more sill is however required for the card games such as poker and blackjack. Poker face is another ever necessary that that helps keep your opponent from calling your bluff. Probabilities and statistics do play a role and knowledge of the two can help you decide, whether or not to hit on a 12 in blackjack.

However games like lottery, scratch cards and keno, according to Lenny Frome, which require absolutely no strategizing. Just pick the right numbers and you and carry home wads of cash.
Two types of betting quite similar to each other are horse betting and sports betting. These bets are possible on a variety of scales. You may bet with a friend, an office pool, or the majestic scale of the Las vegan sports betting area.

Irrespective of whether particular games have the potential to use strategizing or skill, all gamblers believe or want to, that they are in control of the game and in some cases they really do. You can be on your way of becoming a better gambler by familiarizing yourself with the games and the statistics involved.

Amongst Gamblers the most popular games are poker, blackjack, horseracing, slots, roulette, baccarat, craps, keno and lottery.

While poker and blackjack are popular card games which require skills and strategies, slots are pure luck. Games of lottery and keno are also more about luck then skills.

Games like Poker attract large numbers of people to the casinos every year. Mastering this game is all about knowing the game n and out; building relationship between players and understanding that you loosing are your major fault and the dealer can’t do much to get you on the winning track.
Blackjack is another majorly loved game, and a good knowledge of probability along with risk taking capacity can make you into a real winner.

Game of Keno, which is slightly complex and in many ways matches Lottery, is often described as a game of pure luck. Originated in China the game traveled to America ion the 1800’s. However, there are some mathematically complex statistics to your aid, but they are as mentioned “too complex” leaving it surely as a game of Luck.

Casino Gambling-The Games Gamblers Play

When most people think of Casino gambling, probably the first thing which comes to mind is Las Vegas, or Atlantic City. Imagine of bright lights, the sounds of hustle and bustle, and rows and rows of slot machines often come to mind. This is not all there is to casino gambling. The article will discuss casino gambling, as well as some of the games casino gamblers play.

By definition, an casino is basically a building that accommodated gambling. Patrons are often offered the opportunity to gamble by playing many games of chance, or some of skill also. Casino gambling games most often have mathematically calculated odds that ensures the casino retains at least a small advantage which is referred to as the “edge”.

Slot machines are a common gambling accommodation provided to patrons of most casinos. Slot machines are coin operated gambling apparatus, with three reels that spin when the lever is pulled. Most slot machines have a currency detector installed, that validates the coins inserted for play. Slot machines pay off based on how the three reels stop. Each will has a different pattern or symbol visible on the front, and pay offs are based on these patterns or symbols.

The game of poker is also popular in gambling casinos, and can be played in many different styles. Most commonly, the players in a poker game all have fully, as well as sometimes partially concealed, playing cards, and make bets into a pot based on their cards. The player or players which have the best poker combination of playing cards wins the pot in at the end of each hand.

Many patrons of casinos chose to play a dice game called craps. It is also a very popular game among casino gamblers. All the players in the game have the opportunity to bet money against the casino, gambling on the outcome of the roll or series of rolls. The rules of craps can vary from casino to casino, but there are some that will remain common. There are no strategies involved in betting on craps. Its a game of chance, all based on the outcome of the roll of two dice.

Of all casino gambling games, the roulette wheel is often considered the signature casino gambling game. In the game of roulette, the dealer will spin a roulette wheel. The wheel has 37-38 clearly marked numbered pockets where a ball will stop. The pockets are labeled from 1-36 and are alternated between black and red with number one starting with red. Also there is a green pocket, marked with the number zero. Most roulette wheels used in the USA have an addition green pocket marked 00. Roulette is a complete game of chance, as casino patrons bet on where they think the ball will land when the wheel stops spinning. get more info at casinoandsportstalk.com/” target=”_blank casinoandsportstalk.com.
