Emile Durkheim’s Analysis of the Problem of Anomie and Its Connections

According to Durkheim, anomie is a breakdown of social norms and it is a condition where norms no longer control the activities of members in society. Individuals cannot find their place in society without clear rules to help guide them. Changing conditions as well as adjustment of life leads to dissatisfaction, conflict, and deviance. He observed that social periods of disruption leads to higher rates of suicide.

While suicide is an individual act, Durkheim argues that the suicide rate is a social fact; something that is external to any individual. It is a product of the social structure of any given society. Durkheim figured by examining the different types of suicide, he could identify key elements of social organization. He then collected several European nations’ suicide rate statistics, which proved to be relatively constant among those nations and among smaller demographics within those nations. He discovered a collective tendency towards suicide among White, Protestant males. Of equal importance to his methodology, Durkheim drew theoretical conclusions on the social causes of suicide. He proposed four types of suicide, based on the degrees of imbalance of two social forces: social integration and moral regulation. Integration is the extent of social relation binding a person or group to others and regulation is defined as the normative or moral demands placed on an individual that comes with membership in a group

Egoistic suicide resulted from lack of social integration. Individuals who were not sufficiently bound to social groups were left with little social support or guidance had higher rates of suicide. An example Durkheim discovered was that of unmarried people, particularly males who, with less to bind and connect them to stable social norms and goals, committed suicide at higher rates than unmarried people.

The second type, altruistic suicide occurs when individuals are too filled with society. It is also results from lack of social integration and is the opposite of egoistic suicide. The self lose significance, where individuals are so integrated into social groups that they lose sight of their individuality and became willing to sacrifice themselves to the group’s interests, even if that sacrifice was their own life. The most common cases of altruistic suicide occurred among members of the military.

On the second scale, that of moral regulation, lies the other two forms of suicide, the first of which is anomic suicide. Anomic suicide was divided it into four categories: acute and chronic economic anomie and acute and chronic domestic anomie. Each involved an imbalance of means and needs, where means were unable to fulfill needs.

Acute economic anomie is when traditional institutions such as religion and government fail to exercise the moral restraints on a capitalist society. Chronic economic anomie is the gradual diminishing of social regulation. Durkheim’s example of was the ongoing industrial revolution, which deteriorated traditional social rules and often failed to replace them. Obtaining wealth and property was not enough to make individuals happy, as was demonstrated by higher suicide rates among the wealthy than the poor.

Acute domestic anomie is sudden changes in individual’s life that results in an inability to adapt. Widowhood is an example of this type of anomie. Chronic domestic anomie refers to the way marriage regulates the sexual and behavioral need amongst men and women. However, marriage provided different regulations for each gender. Bachelors tended to commit suicide at higher rates than married men because of a lack of regulation and established goals and expectations. On the other hand, marriage has traditionally served to over regulate the lives of women by further restricting their already limited opportunities and goals. Unmarried women, as opposed to unmarried men experienced chronic domestic anomie suicide less. The final type of suicide is fatalistic suicide. This type is only discussed briefly because it was seen as a rare phenomena in the real world. Examples include those with over regulated, unrewarding lives such as slaves, childless married women, and young husbands. The reverse situation, namely excessive regulation without integration also leads to fatalistic suicide. The slave is integrated only through ties to his or her master, and his or her future is in the hands of others.

Durkheim distinguished between anomic suicide and egoistic, altruistic, and fatalistic suicide according to the relation of the actor to his society. When men become detached from society, when they are thrown upon their own devices and loosen the bonds that previously had tied them to their world, they are prone to egoistic, altruistic, and fatalistic suicide. When the moral regulations surrounding individual conduct are relaxed and fail to curb human weaknesses, people are prone to anomic suicide.

Hachem Avoids Paying Taxes on WSOP Winnings

Joe Hachem is still riding the fortunate wave that began for him about seven months ago in July of 2005.

Under Australian law, a citizen does not have to pay income tax on any money earned from pursuing a hobby. And, as luck would have it, Hachem was not a professional poker player at the time of his big win Main Event win, so he does not have to pay any income tax on the $7.5 million he won at the World Series of Poker.

Hachem’s lawyer, Peter Donovan, said in a statement that “As a result of this finding, the poker winnings were classified as income derived from a hobby, and thus not subject to Australian tax.” This means that Hachem’s $7.5 million winnings at the World Series of Poker will remain $7.5 million as he takes it all home to Australia.

The Melbourne resident conquered a record field of 5,600 players on his way to the $7.5 million purse at last year’s World Series of Poker Main Event. The cash prize was the biggest reward given to any winner of the World Series of Poker since it began.

The World Series of Poker is held once a year in Las Vegas, and has circuit tournaments outside of Las Vegas in cities like Atlantic City.

Horoscopes - Leo

In this fifth of a 12 part series on horoscopes, we’re going to look at the second of what are called the summer signs, Leo the Lion.

People who are born between July 23 and August 22 are Leo. Their element is fire, their quality is Fixed, their energy is Yang, their ruler is the Sun, their color is gold, their gem is Ruby, their main anatomical parts are the back, spine and heart, their keywords are willpower, creativity and expressing the heart, their Tarot suit is Wands and their Tarot Major Arcana cards are Strength and The Sun.

Some famous celebrities who are Leos are Ben Affleck, Sandra Bullock, Lisa Kudrow, Lucille Ball, Robert DiNero, Mick Jagger, Madonna, Woody Harrelson and Bill Clinton.

Leo the Lion. The king of the forest, the castle and just about everything else. The practical joker. If ever there was a sign of pure confidence and security, Leo is it. There is an old riddle that goes like this “How many Leos does it take to screw in a light bulb?” The answer, “One and a hallelujah chorus while she does it”.

Yes, Leos invented the word self confidence. They are ruled by the sun and they bask in the spotlight. They are very dramatic, bold, creative and incredibly strong. No other sign can get the attention of a room full of people like a Leo.

Not only that, they are a ton of fun to be around. Leos have great senses of humor and are real practical jokers. No doubt a Leo invented the whoopee cushion and the joy buzzer. It is hard to find a Leo who doesn’t laugh and laugh loud, except of course when they are locked in battle with their sworn enemy. If that should happen, which is quite possible even in the middle of a big party, clear the room. This one won’t stop until only one is left standing.

Because of the nature of the Leo being a leader, they are often surrounded by a bunch of yes men. They like it this way. Don’t ever question a Leo’s authority. That’s why, when it comes to love, the Leo needs somebody who is going to worship the ground they walk on. They expect to be served and well taken care of. The plus side of this is that Leos are very loyal. If you are good to them and they love you, they love you for life. So even though they expect adoration, they give plenty of it in return.

A Leo at work is a born leader. They will usually pick a career that will let them shine. So you won’t find a Leo working in a mail room. More likely, you’ll find him in the board room. The bigger the better as far as they are concerned. President of the company? No problem. President of the United States? Even easier still. There is nothing they feel they can’t do.

A Leo is a very strong and dynamic character. If you want a loyal friend who can beat up your worst bully like enemy, the Leo is who you want in your corner.

Guitar Lesson: Mary Had A Little Lamb For Beginners

Have you ever played a melody on a guitar? Well, if not let this be the first time! I will show you how to play Mary Had A Little Lamb on one string with one finger on your left hand and one finger on your right.

What string you use on your or somebody elses guitar doesn’t matter. It’s a matter of personal choice.

As you know Mary Had A Little Lamb is a popular nursery rhyme. Here is the first verse:

Mary had a little lamb

little lamb, little lamb

Mary had a little lamb

its fleece was white as snow

Thomas Edison used this poem in testing his invention of the phonograph in 1877. It became the first audio recording to be successfully made and played back.

Let’s start by playing on a string of your choice. Play the string with the thumb. If you play the string three times with your right hand thumb we can write it down like this:

0-0-0

If you press down the string on the second fret with your left hand first finger and play it three times and then lift your finger and play on the open string three times like you did before it will look like this:

2-2-2-0-0-0

Got the idea? Well, to play Mary Had A Little Lamb you need two more notes. Press down your first finger on the fourth fret and then on your seventh fret and you have all the necessary notes. The song looks like this:

4-2-0-2-4-4-4–2-2-2–4-7-7

4-2-0-2-4-4-4-4-2-2-4-2-0

If you still have questions you can ask a guitar playing friend to help you. She or he will probably be proud to help you.

If this melody is a little bit to easy for you, you can show it to a not guitar playing friend. Many people start to smile when they can play something on the guitar for the first time!

Foote Notes: Indianapolis at New England

The Colts and Patriots will resume their rivalry when the teams collide in Foxboro for arguably the best Monday Night Football match up of the season. Indianapolis is priced as a 4-point road favorite and the total is hovering around 48.5.

The White Ponies gallop into this game as the NFL’s only perfect team with a 7-0 (SU) and 5-2 (ATS) record for the season. This includes a spotless 4-0 (SU & ATS) mark when on the road.

Peyton Manning, who leads the NFL’s ninth rated offense overall, is having a relatively quiet year in relation to his record breaking campaign in 2004. But Manning is not likely complaining, as this team is as complete as there is in the NFL.

Not only does Indy boast the NFL’s fourth rated ground game, but for the first time in Manning’s career he has a solid defense to rely upon. The Colts stop unit is currently 4th in the NFL in total defense, as well as 6th against the pass and 13th against the run.

If there is a knock on this Indianapolis team, it would have to be strength of schedule thus far. Indy’s seven opponents include Houston (1-7), St. Louis (4-4), San Francisco (2-6), Tennessee (2-7), Cleveland (3-5), Jacksonville (5-3) and Baltimore (2-6). The collective record of these teams is 19-38 (SU) this season.

The Colts narrow 10-3 home win over the Jags was the only game they have played against a foe with a winning record this year. And even though the Patriots have struggled, the defending Super Bowl Champs present Indy with its stiffest test of the season.

The Patriots come in at 4-3 (SU) and 3-4 (ATS) overall, including 2-1 (SU) and 1-2 (ATS) at home. Unlike their AFC counterpart tonight, the Pats have faced a rough and tumble early schedule.

New England’s six opponents include Buffalo (3-5), Denver (6-2), Atlanta (6-2), San Diego (5-4), Pittsburgh (6-2), Carolina (6-2) and Oakland (3-5). The collective record of these teams is 35-23 (SU) this season, while four of the seven are playoff teams from last year. Nevertheless, New England does have some noticeable deficiencies.

The Patriots already have lost more games than all of last season mostly the result of shoddy defense. Belichick’s heralded stop unit has allowed 180 points this season and resides at 29th in the NFL overall. The retirement of linebacker Ted Johnson, along with the release of Ty Law and a secondary decimated by injuries have left the Pats dangerously thin.

The upshot is that New England has turned its focus to offense. Tom Brady is averaging 279 yards passing per game, which is 2nd best in the NFL overall. The Pats are additionally 4th in the NFL in total yards per game and have been “razor sharp” against the number at Gillette Stadium.

New England, in fact, is now 17-4 (ATS) its past twenty-one at home, including 7-2 (ATS) in the rare role of home underdog. Even more important is series history. Manning, the consummate film room student, has been baffled and confused by Belichick’s defensive wizardry.

The Colts are 1-6 (SU) and 0-6-1 (ATS) against New England with Belichick and Manning has never won a game at Gillette Stadium. Note further that Belichick has been the head coach and/or defensive coordinator (Patriots and Jets) vs. Manning eleven times and is 9-1-1 (ATS) vs. him. The simple reason is Bill Belichick is a master of neutralizing good quarterbacks, Manning not withstanding.

Good luck tonight!

Standup Comedians Its Not Just Jokes

Some people might say you are witty. When making a joke your friends seem to laugh. It seems it is something you take pleasure in doing and when people chuckle sometimes it is the ultimate prize. You believe you value comedy, and you should go to the next stage by becoming a professional comedian.

But, being a stand-up comic and comedian is a lot dissimilar than retelling a common joke and waiting for your friends to giggle. With comedy, you should be cognizant about the meeting, become knowledgeable about the stage, and write jokes that express a universal charm.

While being a comedian can be tough, on the contrary sometimes it is also worthwile. Here is some recommendations on what you should know to turn into a comedian.

Build up your personality. Think about all the popular comedians out there. Each lucrative comedian has something really critical about them. Chris Rock. Dave Chapelle. Adam Sandler. Dennis Miller. After a while you hear the names and, you can mindlessly imagine what they are, what they say, and exactly how and why you giggle.

Sometimes it is exaclty what you need to do. As a trainee, it might be a while before you find your personality. Test it in front of the public. Ask for reviews wherever possible. Refine and tweak your stage presence until you’re content with the product.

There are quite a lot of diverse kinds of comedy. Knowing what they are should help you train fittingly. Do you prefer improv comedy, standup, or would you rather emotionalize in a comedy movie or a sitcom? Here are plenty of other options, too. Once you understand what style of comedy you would like to do, you can set objectives and amplify a plan that should help you achieve them.

Attend comedy classes. You will figure out and learn, standup or any extra forms of comedy don’t come as expected. Sure, you can express the physical gift, skill of timing, etc. But, you also need help realizing the dissimilar styles of comedy and how to perfect and draw on them to your advantage.

When you go and take a comedy session, you can improve yourself and get some help from a master comedian. After learning everything the educational and the learning curve has been reduced, you will need to work together with fellow comedians and get reactions.

Put in writing and prepare your act in front of family. Attend standup amateur nights. Essentially, get as much familiarity as possible so youcan get comfortable in front of people. Practice in front of the mirror. By timing your act you can gage the amount of time you will need. Modify and correct your jokes until you get the entire act perfected. Once you complete all of this, you are content to start working in a club for payment.

Enter competitions. Entering competitions is a fantastic way of getting familiarity and to practice your routines in front of audience. When it hits it doesn’t matter if you fancy standup or improv or something other, there are comedy competitions for it. You can join amateur internet talent shows. Yes alot of these may also enforce a prize. The benefit to this, is that agents may be lurking in the public looking to spot new talent.

Saint Kitts And Nevis Casinos

The smallest nation (in terms of land area) in the Western Hemisphere, Saint Kitts and Nevis might not seem like the most obvious place to find good gambling opportunities. Yet this tiny Caribbean state, which with a population of just 43,000 is the least populous country to have United Nations membership, enjoys the facilities of two fully-fledged casinos, including the celebrated Royal Resort casino.

Surprisingly neither of Saint Kitts and Nevis Casinos are found in the capital city (if one can term a town of 15,000 people a city) of Basseterre. Instead both of the casinos are located in the Frigate Bay resort, which is found on one of the nation’s many islands.

The Royal Resort Casino, at 858 Frigate Bay Road, offers an incredible 35,000 square feet of gambling opportunities. There are a scarcely believable 403 slot machines, and - we’re now talking Las Vegas proportions - 34 gaming tables. These offer a huge range of games, including 3 card poker, Baccarat, Blackjack, Caribbean Stud Poker, Craps, Let It Ride and Spanish 21 (a version of standard Blackjack using Spanish decks of cards).

When - if - one gets bored of this huge gambling opportunity, the hotel has 523 rooms and 113 suites for the discerning traveller, along with six restaurants (including the West Indian themed Blu, an Italian called Cucina, and the Royal Grille Steakhouse). For relaxation there is the Emerald Mist Spa, and three swimming pools. For those more keen on exercise there is a wide range of other outdoor pursuits, including horse riding, jet-skiing, and scuba diving.

The Royal Resort Casino is not the only Saint Kitts and Nevis Casinos. The Jack Tar Village casino, which has reopened in 2006 after a refurbishment, is on a Northeastern part of the Leeward Islands, with views of both the Atlantic and the Carribean sea. The casino offers gamblers fifty slot machines and for the more experience, six tables playing Baccarat, Blackjack, Craps and Roulette. For when guests tire of trying to beat the odds there are four restaurants for their pleasure, the Batik Bar and Grill, the Cabana Beach Bar, the Caruso (an Italian), and the Topaz. There are also two bars, a piano bar for those of a musical bent and the Piazza Bar. The opening hours of the casino and bars are 10:30am to 2am, so it will suit both early birds and night owls.

So Saint Kitts and Nevis Casinos offer a superb range of games to the gambler, both the experienced and those merely there for a holiday of a lifetime.

Battery Life and Your Digital Camera

Battery life and Your Digital Camera
With a traditional camera, you can take pictures even when your batteries are empty. So, how are you going to take pictures with your digital camera, when the battery is empty? There is not much choice. To get the most out of the cameras batteries, you should start using some energy saving tactics, that are easy to remember and implement.

Switch off the camera when not in use
use the motor driven zoom lens only when you really need it, don’t use it to show off
shorten the time for previewing the picture on the LCD screen
shorten then time for the automatic shut down of the camera (only do this when timing isn’t an issue, like it is with snapshots, animals or sports photography)
in cold climate, keep the camera warm. Batteries loose their power rapidly when they are getting cold.
When working in cold climate, take a spare set of batteries along
always use the best batteries you can get. Usually the more expensive batteries keep their voltage for a longer time on a steady level.
When using reloadable batteries, get the more expensive NiMH types with the highest capacity available. They have a very long life between reloading and no memory effect.

Tom has spent most of his free time behind cameras of different types. He specializes in close-up work and travel photography. To share his experiences and fascination about digital photography, he has set up digitalcameratips.de digitalcameratips.de which covers topics for beginners as well as advanced users of digital cameras.

Choosing Your First Guitar: A Beginner’s Guide

Picking out what you want for your very first guitar is a difficult and tricky choice. You probably do not know a lot about guitars to begin with, and with the thousands of selections available, it is easy to be confused.

The first decision involves choosing between either an electric or acoustic guitar. Once you have made that choice, the next thing you have to do is to determine the budget that you are comfortable with. If you are really serious about learning, it is recommended that you avoid buying a cheap and low-quality instrument, as such guitars tend to impede your learning. When it comes to upgrading, you will also find that getting a good price for your guitar will be difficult.

Typically, acoustic guitars have six strings, are hollow and have a sound hole. Electric guitars are not hollow, and require a guitar amplifier. However, electric guitars may be easier for beginners, because the strings are easier to press down, and do not cause your fingers to get sore as easily as compared to playing on an acoustic guitar.

One of the most important factors that you have to consider, when choosing between an acoustic or an electric, is what kind of music will you be playing. If you like to learn how to strum your favourite songs, an acoustic guitar may be better. If you are a great fan of rock music, then you might like to start off with an electric guitar. This is important, because if you start off with the wrong kind of guitar, you will find it much more difficult to find the motivation to play regularly.
