I’ve just bought this album after a very long search! It was worth the wait and the effort for this is a great collection of music by the greatest of composers: Bach!

I once read that Bach’s Secular Cantatas give a hint of what a Bach opera might have been like. After listening to this album I must say that I fully agree with that, these cantatas seem much lighter (somehow operistic) than Bach’s "regular" sacred cantatas!

Each of the cantatas in this album is played wonderfully and the recording is fabulous! Jacobs expertly leads an ideal group of singers, among them Andreas Scholl (countertenor), whose singing is always fantastic!!!

This is a gorgeous and very interesting album! If you like Bach’s vocal music buy it…if you can find it!!!

What Makes Great Cinema

The motion picture has taken many steps back from the greatness of its past, but nevertheless that greatness can be achieved once more with the adherence to the elements that follow.

No aspect of great film is more or less important than the next, but great film begins, simply enough, with a great script. Dialogue, and how it is delivered, is critical to any audience being able to engross themselves within the story that unfolds. If the audience can become emotionally attached to a character, whether that character be good or evil, then the film has achieved its primary goal of intellectual entertainment.

The ability of a motion picture to encompass and compliment visually that which is being supported with language is also a primary goal of any filmmaker. Cinematography is paramount to a movies enjoyment and believability, whether it be the city of Atlanta in Gone With the Wind, or a claustrophobic cell of Silence of the Lambs, or the shores of Normandy during a WWII film, representing a story visually is as important as representing that story with a great script.

A director is critical if his vision of the film being produced can be represented accurately and passionately with the tools at hand. Choose the wrong director, and it would be as if a square peg were being jammed into a round hole: disatrous and destructive.

Interestingly enough, the choice of actors and actresses works towards getting the public into a theatre, but only their superior ability to act keeps them hyptnotized to what is being said and seen. Indeed, if a director chooses a star to entice viewers to come and see what he has created, sprinkling that same film with hungry, lesser-known actors and actresses would be equal parts brilliant and savvy.

To a lesser extent, but equally important, would be the soundtrack and the non-diegetic music placed over the entire film. Music is a tremendous vehicle when wielded properly, and works more towards passionate acceptance of what an audience sees and hears.

All these elements work together and in tandem to produce not only good film, but great film. And one last piece for the studios in Hollywood and around the world: Make a great film, and the financial side of this equation will take care of itself. Rarely does a great film go so unnoticed that all who have invested in it may turn a profit, both financially and creatively.

Robbie Williams - Biography

Robert Peter Williams also known as Robbie Williams was born on 13th February 1974 in the village Newcastle-under-Lyme. He sold tens of millions of albums worldwide and is one of the best selling artist not only in the UK but also world wide.

The take that period (1990-1995).

Robbie Williams started his career with the very popular boys band Take that (Robbie Williams, Mark Owen, Jason Orange, Howard Donald and Gary Barlow). They had several number one hits such as “back for good”. In total they had 10 UK number one singles seven of them were created when Robbie Williams was a member of the band. In 1995 the band splitted however in 2006 they came back with a new single “patience” the band was reformed but this time without Robbie Williams.

Robbie William’s solo career

In 1996 he covered George Michaels’ freedom and reached number two in two in the UK hit parades. This number is very impressive because the original George Michael didn’t receive a top ten place in the charts. In September 1997 Robbie Williams released his debut album live trough a lens. He received a top eight position in the UK charts, however he was struggling to reach the top 40 in the European charts.

In 1998 I worked together with Williams and chambers to make the album “Millennium”. At this time he had a relationship with Nicole Appleton a member of the band All Saints. The band still active these days. With the single millennium he reached his first top one single in the hit charts. And he had not only success in Europe but also in Latin America. “She’s the one” another single from the album Millennium reached also the number one in the charts.

In 1999 he did a lot of promotions and tours and without doubt he was a very successful artist.
He created also a knew album with the well known hits like “Rock Dj”, “Supreme”. He collaborated also with the Australian Pop artist Kylie Minogue (Kids).

In late 2001 he released a new album Swing when you are winning. In this album he had a hit with Nicole Kidman “something stupid” it was a cover from Frank and Nancy Sinatra.
In 2002 Williams began working on what would be his fifth studio album, Escapology. It was the best selling album of this year in 2002.

His ninth album was called Intensive care, his best selling studio career of his time with the single Rudebox that’s also the upcoming title for his next album.

His last album so far has the title Rudebox with hits such as Rudebox and she’s Madonna. This latest song was released with the Pet Shop Boys and is a love song to Madonna. In the video clip you can see Robbie Williams as a drag queen dressed in a white jacket.

Texas Hold’em Poker Tournament Strategy - How To Play Small Pocket Pairs

Playing small pocket pairs may be one of the easiest types of hands to play. Small pocket pairs consist of: TT, 99, 88, 77, 66, 55, 44, 33, and 22. In any position, you should limp with these hands. If someone happens to raise pre-flop, you should call a raise about three to four times the big blind. While playing pocket pairs, you are hoping to hit three of a kind on the flop. If you hit three of a kind or a set on the flop, play them aggressively. You are hoping that one of your opponents hit his top pair and will not fold his hand. If you do not hit a set, most times you should simply fold your hand. Sometimes you will have TT and the flop with be all low cards like 3 5 6. These are very difficult situations to play as your opponents may have hit a straight or a set.

In order to play in these situations, you should have a read on your opponent. Past observation of your opponent’s play should give you an idea of the strength of his hand. How has your opponent played a set in the past? How does your opponent play a straight? Unless you have a very good read on your opponent, it might be smart to fold your hand. As you get better, you will have better reads and feel comfortable in these situations. More advanced players will sometimes raise small pairs to disguise their hand. Pay attention to your opponents and small pairs will win you a lot of chips.

First of all, the tried-and-true method of the main character narrating as the story goes along, just didn’t work with Casey Affleck’s nasally and whiny voice. Maybe it was because Ben Affleck directing his brother Casey, thought it would work. It was more annoying and distracting instead of adding to the movie.

Michelle Monaghan didn’t play a very important or effective part. Amy Ryan as Helene McCready, was perfect as the "doper" and irresponsible mother who got her child back. Ed Harris as Detective Remy Bressant, was very convincing as the main cop and co-conspirator of the kidnapping. Morgan Freeman the mastermind and self-proclaimed "saviour" of the child of Helene McCready played a minor part until the very end.

I’m glad this didn’t turn out to be a movie that I’d need a calculator to rack up the body count. Although there was considerable amount of victims adding up (related and unrelated) after the initial kidnapping.

And in the end, when Casey’s character Patrick Kenzie has Morgan Freeman and the others arrested for kidnapping because "it was the right thing to do," he himself goes "Scot-free" after murdering (read Executing) a child molester and killer that the cops helped coverup since he tried to save the life of a cop shot at the very same crime scene. This self-righteous ending just didn’t play into the message he wanted to convey. Sure, no one was going to miss the child molester/killer, but his summary execution was in step with that old saying of "the lesser of two evils." Pretty sour.

Casey Affleck’s tough-guy persona just didn’t work in this movie. He just doesn’t have that exterior gruff look or demeanor to portray a "bigger-than-life hero."

There’s a moment about 5 minutes into "Gone Baby Gone" when you think you might just have stumbled on a genuine masterpiece…

As Casey Affleck ruminates in a weary beaten-up voiceover about good and evil and the life choices we make and how neighbourhoods shape us as people and those choices, the camera pans across the locals he’s talking about and their Boston inner city terrain.

These are real people in the real world - all manner of faces, colours and creeds - just going about their business - a man sat on the steps of a tenement building having a midday cigarette - kids of 8 and 9 flipping open their mobile phones - murals on walls declaring all sorts - a white father plops his baseball cap on the head of his gorgeous son of one who giggles, while a black father positions his equally gorgeous older son on the baseball circle in the local park with a sense of pride - all of it eventually making its way to a media circus outside a suburban home and a picture of a 9-year old girl on a tree…

The opening minutes are full of these beautifully realised vignettes - the use of real Bostonians and their ‘tough’ suburbs adding a reality and power to Gone Baby Gone that is simply stunning - and that gritty reality continues throughout the film. And when you learn that the director is pretty boy Ben Affleck whom everyone loves to hate - you’re more than impressed.

But then of course it all goes to mush when the frankly ludicrously cherubic face of Casey Affleck appears with his equally drippy girlfriend Michelle Monaghan (an amazingly dull part for her) in tow beside him - they’re the leads? We’re expected to believe these dweebs?? While Casey is good in parts, he’s out of his depth in others - and worse - a lot of the time you feel he’s literally going to burst into a fit of the giggles at any moment. Monaghan is fabulous expressively as an actress, but her character Angie is a bit weedy and therefore difficult to care about - Angie seems almost superfluous to requirements (she was more fleshed out in the book).

But then you ask yourself why did top quality actors like Morgan Freeman and Ed Harris get involved in this movie - and the answer is the truly fabulous script adapted by Aaron Stockard from Denis Lehane’s book of the same name. This is "Mystic River" territory - Lehane has worked in child abuse and abduction cases and knows his monsters and their families so well that his observations of them hurt you - literally. There are many scenes in this excellent film where I found myself tearful - and not always for the grotesque things that Miramax must show you about pervs and their ways - but for the humanity of the other people involved - an emotion that seems all too often missing from other films about this easy-to-exploit subject. Ben Affleck has imbibed his debut with genuine heart even if the story does go off the rails a bit towards the end.

Given real meat to work with, the large varied cast is uniformly brilliant right down to even the smallest part - and just when you think you’ve seen all that Harris and Freeman have to give - they floor you - both of them - adding a gravitas throughout that must have had the older Affleck tingling in his Director’s chair. John Ashton is superb too as Ed Harris’ sidekick and Titus Welliver as the child’s father Lionel who may or may not be a nice guy. But the big surprise is Amy Ryan (Oscar nominated) who plays the devious trailer-trash druggy mum Helen McCready whose daughter Amanda is the girl pictured everywhere and abducted. You hate her and yet empathise with her in equal measure - and you wonder (like Affleck’s character does) should a 9-year old girl be back with this train wreck of a person - or does Helen McCready deserve a second chance at life like everyone else? And who makes that decision?

The Blu Ray print is surprisingly bad - speckled and blurry in the indoor and night scenes and hardly revelatory anywhere else. Also 2 of the special features cavalierly give away far too much of the plot and the twists - so don’t watch either before you see the movie. Also of note is David Buckley’s tenderly evocative music, which gives many of the down and up scenes a hugely powerful lift.

Despite being just a few notches short in places, "Gone Baby Gone" is a superb film - a genuine sleeper from 2008 - and Ben Affleck has arrived as a Director - big time.

I was moved, confused, hurt and left thinking about difficult decisions.

Highly recommended.

GBG provided authentic Boston grit, quality acting, and a storyline that keeps you guessing while it leads to a provocative and intense finale. Rated a 8.5/10 and recommended as one of ‘07 Top 10.

I came to this film with high expectations, I mean, it had gotten an Academy Award nomination for one of the supporting players, but honestly, I was perplexed as to what was so great about it, I mean, it’s a decent yarn, up until the end, but hardly Mystic River. First let me say, I HATED Casey Affleck in this, his character is so naive and makes the most foolish, obtuse decision at the end, that ruins the film entirely, and Affleck never makes you like or support this yutz, so your just let with thinking, wow, what a moron. The story is interesting, in a Mystic River sort of way, and the supporting players, starting with Ed Harris are fantastic, I just can help but come back to the way Affleck plays this idiot cop, I just never bought this guy being such a sap and his ruinous decision he makes at the end is positively sickening, and the way it fades to black at the end, is like, uh Ok, is that IT?!…recommended, but not highly, frankly had it had a different lead, maybe it would have been great, who knows.

The Bottom Line:

An interesting-enough crime story in its own right, Gone Baby Gone is elevated to another level by terrific acting and an ending that asks perhaps better than any movie what "doing the right thing" actually means; with several standout scenes and the courage of its convictions, it is most definitely a film to watch or own.

Classic Christmas Memory Movies

Christmas is a time for memories. What better way to create lasting ones than to gather the whole family around to watch some great classic Christmas movies?

Many movies come to mind, but following are the three considered by many to be the best.

1)It?s A Wonderful Life(1946): James(Jimmy) Stewart, Donna Reed, Lionel Barrymore

George Bailey(Jimmy Stewart) is considering ending it all to escape all the problems in his life?on Christmas! Just as he is about to jump off a bridge, he?s interrupted by Clarence, his guardian angel(Henry Travers). To convince George not to go through with it, Clarence shows him what life would be like without him.

Did you just hear that bell ring? An angel just got his wings.

2)Miracle On 34th Street(1947): Edmund Gwenn, Maureen O?Hara, John Payne, Gene Lockhart, Natalie Wood

When nice, old Kris Kringle(Edmund Gwenn) claims to be the real Santa and is put in an insane asylum, Fred Gailey(John Payne) decides to represent him in court. In a hearing that tests the people?s beliefs, Kris is found to be the real Santa.

Yes, Susan(Natalie Wood), there is a Santa Claus.

3)Scrooge(1951): Alastair Sim, Mervyn Jones, Michael Hordern

Everybody knows the story of Ebenezer Scrooge. But, even with all the different versions of ?A Christmas Carol,? over the years, none have given a better performance than Alastair Sim. It?s as if he was born to play the stingy, hard-hearted Scrooge. Sim is the embodiment of what Charles Dickens had in mind.

I think I?ll go buy the biggest goose in all of London.

Now go rent these three all-time classic Christmas movies, make some hot chocolate, gather the family around the TV and start making some classic Christmas movie memories.

Adrift-Open Water 2-The Round Up Review

Anyone who watched Open Water will know what to expect here. Except this time it’s six people that jump off a yacht and forget to put the ladder down, so we’re stranded with them for an hour and half while they try and make it back on-board.

Yet while Open Water was a real waste of your time and money, Adrfit is certainly a step up. Billed as Open Water 2 pretty much everywhere else apart from the UK, you can see that the publishers have firmly nailed their colours to the mast (sorry, couldn’t help it).

Yet comparisons with Open Water are largely unfair, as Adrift is a superior movie on every level. That being said, it’s still not a great movie. As soon as you see “Based on a True Story” scroll across the screen, you know it’s not going to end well for all involved. And sure enough, by the time the credits role, the original 6 have been somewhat thinned out . The script suffers from the usual clangers, some of the acting is borderline laughable and the film ends on what can only be described as a confusing note.

As soon as you see “based on a true story” flash across the screen, you know you could be in for some trouble! And so it is with Open Water 2: Adrift. If this truly is based on a true story, you are left feeling that these people we’re really too thick to live in the first place and it’s really no great loss if they don’t make it safely back to shore.

If this thing sounds up your street, then good on you, for films of it’s type, it’s better than most but then, that’s not saying much.

WNBA Player Arrested After Punching A Player

Chicago Sky’s WNBA player Deanna Jackson was arrested in Israel on an assault charge after she hit a player from the opposing team in the parking lot after the game. Jackson will not be allowed to leave Israel till after the Chicago Sky’s pre-season opening game.

Jackson spent this winter playing for Anda Ramat Hasharon in the Israel league. He was arrested after she attacked Ina Gourevitch, an Elitzure Ramle guard. The attack happened after Ramle won the league championship game 81-68. However, during the closing minutes of the game, Jackson and Gourevitch got into a fight and shouted insults at each other.

The fight spilled into the parking lot where Jackson sought out Gourevitch and then punched her on the nose and broke it.

Jackson’s passport has been confiscated and she was scheduled to leave Israel the following day to join her team, Chicago Sky, who are scheduled to begin their first preseason game against Phoenix at home.

The Sky have suspended Jackson indefinitely. Michael Alter, the Chicago Sky owner, said the organization was shocked and embarrassed by Jackson’s behavior, more so because it was completely out of character. He further added that there was no place in the WNBA and Chicago Sky for this kind of behavior.

Team officials spoke with Jackson’s agent who confirmed that Jackson struck Gourevitch after the game.

Jackson is due to appear in court on May 3 and Gourevitch has filed a lawsuit seeking $20,000 in damages.

In a statement released by Jackson’s Israeli team, Jackson has apologized to Gourevitch for her behavior while Ramle chairman Shmulik Levkovitz said that the incident had tarnish not just the championship game but also the entire basketball season in Israel.

Jackson is one of 17 WNBA players who spent the winter in Israel. In Israel top American players make around $80,000 a season while WNBA salaries for the season range from $31,000 to $90,000. That is why many top WNBA players travel abroad each winter looking for lucrative opportunities to make extra money.
